The article you are reading is a collection of random thoughts as they pertain to the concrete construction industry. I had the opportunity to attend the ACI International Spring
Convention in Kansas City and would have to say it was a phenomenal and educational experience. I do plan on attending other ACI International
Conventions in the future.
Bob Irwin
2015 ACI NE
President
Nebraska was well represented at the convention. We had a number of people in attendance including students as well as
Mike Willman who was recognized for his contributions to chapter activities and Jereme Montgomery who was a speaker during contractor’s day. The Nebraska Chapter also received recognition as an outstanding chapter for the second year in a row.
I have been spending some time listening to a unique podcast that deals with the concrete construction industry in Nebraska. What a great way to put a spotlight on something that so many of us are so passionate about!
I would encourage our members to check out Concrete
Garb if they get a chance. You can find them on the internet or on your favorite medium for podcasts. I hope they are successful in introducing young people to the concrete industry as a viable career.
Our annual golf outing was certainly cool and cloudy. I don’t know if members had access to some great long range weather forecast or if our membership is losing interest in our golf outing but attendance was really low!
We would appreciate your thoughts on how to make our golf outing a "must do" on everyone’s list. I know everyone appears to have a great deal on their plate but the golf outing should be a fun event to help the chapter recruit new members and produce funds to help support our other activities.
I hope you all have a great summer and hope you can find the time to attend an ACI Nebraska Chapter activity this fall and winter.
On May 8, ACI Nebraska held its annual spring golf tournament. Although the weather was less than cooperative, 40+ attendees participated in this event with
11 total sponsors.
Held at Ashland Golf Club, this event supported opportunities for existing members to recruit new members to our Chapter and numerous new members were added. It was a good opportunity to spend time with some clients and network in an informal environment.
The ACI-NE golf committee would like to give a special thanks to all who participated!

The 2014 - 2015 ACI training season was completed
April 15, 2015 in Kearney, NE.
The ACI Nebraska Chapter sponsored seven ACI Field
Testing Technician Grade I Certification classes, with
265 examinees, and 228 certified. One ACI Strength testing class with 26 examinees and 25 certified and two Flatwork Finisher classes with 28 examinees and 25 certified.
The Technical Committee is currently scheduling an
ACI Field Testing Grade I Certification written exam only. This exam will be administered in June for anyone that needs to re-take the written exam.
ACI certifications are important to the people in the concrete industry. On behalf of the ACI Nebraska
Chapter, we are pleased to be able to administer this program in cooperation with NC&AA and
NDOR. The ACI training program continues to be cost effective and a quality program due to the local ready mix producers and the volunteer support.
On behalf of the ACI Nebraska Chapter, I would like to thank the following for all the work they do to make this program a success: Rochelle Hitz, and Jereme Montgomery, Nebraska Concrete &
Aggregates Association; Jim Musilek, Bob Matlock,
Larry Schmidt, Hoodie Krause, Dan Ziska, Kyle Poff,
Cal Splattstoesser, Rodney McNeel, Gary Neu, Bill
Cook and Steve Wobken; the ACI Nebraska Chapter and Nebraska Department of Roads volunteers.

For the first time in history, the Nebraska
Trucking Association opened up their Truck
Driver Championships to add the first “Mixer
Driver” class.
The Nebraska Truck Driving Championships
(NTDC) is a two-day event and consisting of a written test, walk around truck inspections, State
Trooper interviews, and driving the challenge course. NC&AA member companies registered nine mixer competitors from five companies.
In total, 91 drivers competed in ten different classes. The competition was held in Grand
Island, Nebraska on June 5 th and 6 th , 2015.
After just two days, history was made. The NTDC crowned
Nebraska’s very first “Mixer Driver
Champion,” Mr. Brian Bosiljevac with
Consolidated Concrete.
Additional Competitors:
T roy Sonnenfeld (Consolidated
Concrete); James Cook (Concrete
Industries); Don Dillon (Paulsen
Inc.); Dennis Fleming (Paulsen
Inc.); Shawn Wlaschin (Lyman-
Richey Corp); and Evan Fogleman
(Kearney Concrete Company).
For the past few years, the
NC&AA Board of Direction have discussed having some form of mixer driver rodeo event, but just couldn’t get anything started.
Then, Dave Daily with Lyman-
Richey Corporation approached the NC&AA with a suggestion of expanding the competition by adding a mixer class. Two meetings later, the Truck Driving
Championships Steering committee approved the addition.
Special thanks to Mr. Daily for his vision and enthusiasm to make it all happen.
Also, special thanks to NC&AA members who sponsored and showed their support during the
NTDC:
• Consolidated Concrete Company
• Holcim US Inc.
• Kearney Concrete Company
• Lyman-Richey Corporation
• McNeilus
• Paulsen Inc.
1st Place: Brian Bosiljevac
Consolidated Concrete
2nd Place: Daryle Salie
Lyman-Richey Corporation
3rd Place: Andrew Wagner
Lyman-Richey Corporation
• Arps RED-E-MIX
Stay tuned for next year. I feel this event is going to be something special to show our drivers appreciation and a great way to show them recognition for being loyal, dedicated, and safe employees.

The Nebraska Chapter of ACI has a diverse membership of production and product representatives, architects, engineers, contractors, materials testing technicians, construction inspectors, materials and equipment suppliers, local and state government representatives, educators, and students. The strength of our chapter membership is closely related to our membership size and diversity.
Please join us in our continued quest for further strengthening our chapter and its membership. The benefits of increased membership enhance our educational programs, networking opportunities, further promote our construction material of choice, and our technical training abilities.
Membership cost is $30 per year for regular associates and $5 for students. Members receive reduced rates for seminars and outings. A membership form is posted on the Nebraska Chapter website.
ACI
ICF Construction Breakfast Seminar
A seminar on Insulated Concrete Form (ICF) construction for residential and light commercial buildings was held in Omaha on May 14, 2015. Mr. Darryl Ulrich, Regional Sales Manager of
Fox Blocks, was our presenter. The event was well attended and numerous questions were addressed on construction methods, procedures, and materials. While the ICF construction market in our area is in its infancy, the ICF market is booming in nearby markets, especially to our south and southwest. ICF construction rewards owners with long-term energy efficiency.
Summer Months
Due to demanding construction schedules associated with the summer months, the Nebraska Chapter of ACI will not hold any breakfast seminars, certification or training events, or related events through August. We will resume these events in
September. Ideally, events will be held in Omaha and possibly
Kearney.
Need Your Ideas
For our upcoming fall events, we are always looking for topics, field trips, and presenters. Please call or email me with your thoughts for presentations and or field trip sites. I can be contacted at either (402) 556-2171 or mgerdes@thielegeotech.com.
