Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated Upsilon Xi Omega Chapter “A Catalyst for Excellence” November 15, 2014 Greetings from the Basileus On November 27, 2014, Thanksgiving Day, we will sit down together, count our blessings, and give thanks for our families and loved ones. Our families are bound together through times of joy and times of grief. They shape us, support us, instill the values that guide us as individuals, and make it possible all that we achieve. So on this special day, we will give thanks for our family -for all the wisdom, support, and love they have brought into our lives. But Thanksgiving is also a day to remember those who cannot sit down to break bread with those they love. Those who must spend tomorrow apart from their families to work a second job, so they can keep food on the table or send a child to school. We are grateful beyond words for the service and hard work of so many Americans who make our country great through their sacrifice. So when we gather on Thanksgiving Day, let us also use the occasion to renew our commitment to building a more peaceful and prosperous future that every family can enjoy. In this season of thanksgiving, I want to take a moment to express my gratitude to you for the service that you continually provide to our community. VOLUME 7, ISSUE 9 “The Walls of AKA ” They are our founders. They were undergraduates, Lucy Slowe, Norma Boyd and the other founders. Although from meager beginnings, they were visionaries. If this is where we came from, let’s look at ourselves and determine where we are going. Our incorporators, spearheaded by Nellie Quander, wanted to ensure the perpetuity of our organization. The purpose of Alpha Kappa Alpha is to cultivate and encourage high scholastic and ethical standards, to promote unity and friendship among college women, and to be of service to all mankind. If this is our purpose, we must support it. Why did we join AKA if we didn’t support the purpose. Are our actions aligned with our purpose? Programs are the heart of AKA. Program initiatives are principles of basic human rights. We as members are asked to devote our talent and resources to this cause. What is your number one service initiative? Who is AKA, what is her purpose? We must not forget that. What does AKA mean to you? Why did we join AKA? What made us want to become members? --To better our community, better ourselves. Did we look up to members of AKA.? What should we look for in new members? - Leadership positions, high ethical and moral standards, volunteer service? What can a new member bring to our house. If we want respect from a new member, we must have class, be the person who our founders intended us to be. People will always remember how you treat them. Our actions affect the house of AKA. If one person does something inappropriate or unsanctioned, it could put the entire chapter in jeopardy. If we don’t protect the inside of our house, it starts to crumble, to fall apart. Will we be known as the sorors who ruined the house? Cont’d page 2. When someone is doing something that is wrong, it is time to tap their shoulders and tell them they are doing something that is not right. Hold them accountable. Are you willing to turn a blind eye when someone is doing something that is not right? We must maintain communication as we build the generational gap. We must remember who we are. We are the tenets of AKA. We must protect our house - to serve mankind. When we look in our house, does it look like our fathers intended it to be? We must always protect our pearls. We are the first, we are the originators, we are ethical and moral; We have high scholastic standards; We respect and honor our history and our founders; We love and we have fun. We make mistakes but we forgive. We protect each other--we are committed to sisterhood and service.
