(3-0) COURSE DESCRIPTION: General Psychology is an introductory course including the study of scientific research and application in regard to the psychological areas of affect, behavior, and cognition. This course is offered in the belief that an introduction to the many facets of psychology is an important part of anyone’s general educational development. Therefore, a general goal of this course is to prepare students to be informed critical thinkers of contemporary psychology, as well as to provide a foundation for further study in psychology. Read and critically analyze research and the methods of research in psychology. List the various sub-fields of psychology and how they are generally employed. Understand the relationship of biology and behavior and identify the major functions of the brain. Identify the senses and influences on perception. Describe and demonstrate how learning occurs and can affect behavior. Identify areas of psychometrics and analyze the controversy over the use of IQ testing. Develop an understanding of the developmental changes from conception to older adulthood and death. List the human drives and discuss motivational influences. Describe emotions, including physiological changes and their effect on human behaviors. Discuss the major theories of personality and critically analyze some of their strengths and weaknesses. Describe various psychological disorders and present day therapies. The above list of objectives should not be interpreted as all inclusive. Four exams will be given throughout the semester; the last one will be considered the final exam. Each exam will consist of 60 questions, multiple choice, true and false, and a short essay, matching. B. The exams represent objectives presented in class throughout the semester. These objectives reflect textbook material, as well as material presented by your instructor. After the objectives have been presented in class, it is the student’s responsibility to obtain and master them. 3 C. The final exam will consist of items related to the last section of material and items comprehensive to concepts presented in class earlier in the semester. D. Four quizzes will be administered, one within each of the exam sections of material. Each quiz will be worth 10 points. E. Bonus Points: Four article reviews, 1-2 pages in length will be assigned; one within each of the exam sections of material. Each assignment is worth bonus points. A total of 20 bonus points may be earned by successfully completing all 4 article reviews: 5 points each; News Flashes related to psychological effects – 2 points each; 5 allowed for each student – bonus points total of 10. F. Attendance. John A. Logan College has an official attendance policy. Please consult your student handbook to familiarize yourself with this policy. An instructor has the prerogative to drop a student who does not comply with this policy. Attendance is monitored on a regular basis. Any absences without reasonable explanation may lower your grade. G. If, for any reason, you have to miss a quiz or an exam, you must call in advance, if possible. The instructor may change the format for any makeup quizzes or exams. H. There are no makeup bonus activities. A makeup hourly exam may be given if in the opinion of the instructor an adequate explanation is given prior to the test. All allowable makeup work must be completed before a deadline designated by the instructor. If, for any reason, you cannot take a test, call the College, Extension 8853, and leave a message. It is the responsibility of the student to contact the instructor concerning any allowable makeup work. I. No incomplete grade is considered by the instructor unless 3/4 of the course has been completed and evaluated with at least a grade of “C” or better. An incomplete grade must be discussed with the instructor, and is given only at the discretion of the instructor. J. Appropriate classroom conduct at the college level includes being on time and prepared for class, as well as behaving respectfully towards all others at all times. Tardiness, sleeping in class, working on other course materials during class, and any other forms of disrespect are beneath college standards and can result in being excused from the class. Do not come to class late. Turn cell phones off. Please also note the college policy on cheating and plagiarism. Student Success Center (Room C219). Services available for students include tutoring (both scheduled one-on-one tutoring and walk-in tutoring) and Disability Support Services. Students can drop in during the hours of operation for tutoring in the Math Help Room (C219 and C223) or the Biology Help Room (C243A). To receive one-onone tutoring, students should make a request early in the semester in the Student 4 Success Center. The Student Success Center is also the place to arrange accommodations. John A. Students who receive financial assistance and completely withdraw from classes prior to 60% of the semester being completed (approximately 2-3 weeks after midterm) could be responsible to return a portion of their Federal Pell Grant award. Prior to withdrawing from courses, students should contact the Financial Aid Office. Course Withdrawal Information. It is expected that you will attend this class regularly. If you stop attending for any reason, you should contact your advisor and withdraw officially to avoid the posting of a failing grade (an E) to your transcript. It is also advisable to discuss the situation with your instructor before dropping. Administrative Withdrawal. A student may be withdrawn from a class for lack of attendance/participation as defined below. Logging into an online course is not sufficient to be considered participation. Participation for online courses is defined as an active process and may include posting/sending assignments to the drop box or instructor’s email, participating in online discussion boards, taking quizzes or exams, or otherwise communicating and/or participating in some manner that is approved by the instructor. A student who has been administratively withdrawn from class will receive an email notification from the Admissions Office. This notification will outline the student’s appeal options if the student wishes to re-enroll in the course.
