RECAPPING LAST WEEK’S ACTION Sunday - UCLA 12, Saint Mary’s 1 (5 innings) Nine of the Bruins’ 12 runs on Sunday were scored with two outs, as junior Andrea Harrison capped off a fantastic weekend with a 3-for-3, five-RBI effort in ninth-ranked UCLA’s 12-1, five-inning victory over Saint Mary’s at the Long Beach Marriott Invitational. Freshman Jessica Hall struck out eight in the complete-game, three-hitter. The Bruins improve to 20-5, while the Gaels fall to 3-5. Harrison finished the weekend with a .750 average (12-for-16) with two home runs, 10 runs batted in, five runs scored and five doubles. UCLA pounded out 12 hits, as eight of the nine starters had at least one. Senior GiOnna DiSalvatore went 2-for-3 with three RBI and two runs scored, junior Katie Schroeder went 2-for-3 with three runs scored and sophomore B.B. Bates scored three times and drove in a pair. Hall improved to 12-4 on the year, allowing a run, three hits and four walks in five innings. She struck out a pair in the first and the side in order in the second. UCLA netted a pair of runs in the bottom of the first. Schroeder led off with a single up the middle and stole second, with back-toback walks to Bates and DiSalvatore loading the bases. Harrison followed with a single to right to plate Schroeder to make it 1-0. Bates then brought in the Bruins’ second run when freshman Kellie Fox grounded into a fielder’s choice back to the circle. The Bruins added two more with a two-out rally in the second. Schroeder had a one-out double to left, and one out later, DiSalvatore tripled off the center-field wall to plate UCLA’s third run. Harrison then doubled to right-center to bring in DiSalvatore to make it 4-0. The Gaels struck back with a run in the top of the third. With one out, Kayla Gonzales singled to left and moved to third on a double to center by Rebecca Sabatini. Michelle Mounts then lifted a sacrifice fly to center to bring in Gonzales to make it 4-1. UCLA busted it open in its half of the third, sending 11 to the plate and scoring six times. Freshman Alyssa Tiumalu recorded a one-out single to right and advanced to second when junior Marti Reed reached on a fielding error by Sabatini at short. Freshman Talee Snow followed with a ground-rule double to left-center to plate Tiumalu to make it 5-1. After a walk to Schroeder loaded the bases, Bates tapped back to the circle, with Britany Linton coming home to force Reed for the second out. DiSalvatore followed with a double to center to drive in Snow and Schroeder to increase the lead to 7-1. Harrison then hit her team-best eighth homer to left to make it a 10-1 game. The Bruins extended their lead with two runs on one swing in the fourth. Reed drew a leadoff walk and came home two outs later on a homer to center by Bates, her fifth of the season, to make it 12-1. Saturday - BYU 6, UCLA 4; UCLA 11, Cal State Fullerton 2 (5) Senior Donna Kerr struck out 19 in 10 2/3 innings over two games, while sophomore B.B. Bates had five hits in Saturday’s doubleheader, as the ninth-ranked Bruins defeated Cal State Fullerton 11-2 in five innings and lost to BYU 6-4 at the Long Beach Marriott Invitational. In game one, the Bruins exploded for 13 hits and scored in every inning, behind junior Andrea Harrison’s first-career, four-hit game to go along with four runs batted in. Seven of the nine Bruin starters had at least one hit. Bates went 3-for-3 with three runs scored and an RBI and junior Marti Reed was 2-for-4 with an RBI and a run scored. Kerr improved to 7-1 on the year, striking out nine and giving up two runs, five hits and three walks in five innings. Kerr fanned three in the second and two apiece in the first, third and fifth innings, retiring the side in order in Fullerton’s final at-bat. The Bruins (19-4) started with a pair of runs in the top of the first. Junior Katie Schroeder walked and moved to second on an illegal pitch. Bates then reached on a bloop infield single that landed right at the second-base bag, with Schroeder remaining at second. After senior GiOnna DiSalvatore grounded out to the circle to advance both runners into scoring position, Harrison singled up the middle to plate a pair to make it 2-0. The Titans (7-11) got one back on the first pitch of the bottom of the first, as Lauren Mario homered to left to make it 2-1. Fullerton had a chance to score some more after loading the bases, but Kerr fanned Adriana Martinez swinging to end the threat. UCLA got the run back in the top of the second. Alyssa Tiumalu led off with a walk and moved to third when Reed’s tapper to Martinez at short was thrown into right field on a force attempt. Freshman Talee Snow then reached on an infield single to second to score Tiumalu to make it 3-1. After Fullerton left a pair on base in the bottom of the second, the Bruins added to their lead with a run in the third. Harrison and freshman Kellie Fox had back-to-back singles to open the inning, but one out later, Harrison was forced at third on a groundout to short off the bat of Tiumalu. However, Reed posted a big RBI with two outs, singling up the middle to plate Fox to make it 4-1. In the fourth, Bates posted a one-out double to right and came home one batter later on a single up the middle by Harrison to increase the lead to 5-1. In the bottom half of the fourth, the Titans rallied with two outs. Leesa Harris drew a free pass, stole second, moved to third on a wild pitch and scored one batter later on a single up the middle by Ashley Carter to cut the deficit to 5-2. The Bruins busted it open though with six runs in the fifth, sending 12 to the plate to invoke the mercy rule. Junior Dani Yudin was hit to open the inning and was pinch-run for by senior Grace Murray, who moved to second on a single to left by Tiumalu and advanced to third on a single to left by Reed. Snow would make it 6-2 on a bases-loaded walk, while Schroeder followed with a single through the right side to bring in Tiumalu and Reed to increase the advantage to 8-2. Bates singled through the left side to plate Snow for the Bruins’ ninth run, and after a groundout by DiSalvatore moved Schroeder to third and Bates to second, Harrison reached on an infield single to second to drive in Schroeder to make it 10-2. A Fox walk would re-load the bases, and one out later, Tiumalu drew a free pass to force in Bates with UCLA’s 11th run. In the nightcap, the Bruins were unable to dig themselves out of an early 5-0 deficit. Bates had two hits and Fox hit a three-run homer. Kerr was great in relief, striking out 10 and giving up only one run, four hits and two walks in 5 2/3 innings. Freshman Jessica Hall (11-4) started and allowed three earned runs, two walks and four hits with one strikeout in 1 1/3 frames. The Cougars jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the top of the first. Kristin Delahoussaye walked, Jessica Dugas singled to left and both runners moved up on a wild pitch. JC Clayton followed with a single up the middle to bring in Delahoussaye with BYU’s first run. After Clayton was forced at second on a grounder to short off the bat of Jessica Fitu, Caschjen Atagi bunted one back to the circle, but Hall’s throw to first was wild, allowing Dugas to score the Cougars’ second run. As Fitu moved to third on the throwing error, Delaney Willard grounded out to short to bring her in to make it 3-0. BYU added two more in the second. With one out, Krista Hicks was hit by a pitch, moved to second on a wild pitch, advanced to third on a single up the middle by Delahoussaye and scored on a single to left by Dugas to make it 4-0. After a walk to Clayton loaded the bases, Fitu struck out, but the ball got away from Yudin behind the plate, allowing Delahoussaye to score the Cougars’ fifth run. The Bruins scratched a run across in the second. Harrison led off with a double to right-center, and one out later, UCLA loaded the bases on walks to Yudin and Tiumalu. One out later, Lindvall blooped one over the head of Katie Manuma at first to plate Harrison to make it 5-1. The Cougars got the run back in the fifth on a leadoff homer by Manuma to make it 6-1. UCLA cut its deficit to a pair on one swing of the bat in the bottom of the sixth. Bates led off with a single to right-center, but was erased at second on a fielder’s choice groundout back to the circle off the bat of DiSalvatore. After a walk to Harrison, Fox hit her sixth homer of the season to center to make it a 6-4 ballgame. The Bruins were able to get the tying run to the plate in the seventh following a two-out double by Bates. But Paige Affleck retired DiSalvatore on a groundout to third to end the game. Friday - UCLA 5, Sacramento St. 3; UCLA 7, Long Beach St. 3 The top four in the UCLA batting order, junior Katie Schroeder, sophomore B.B. Bates, senior GiOnna DiSalvatore and junior Andrea Harrison, combined to go 10-for-17 with three homers, six RBI and five runs scored, as the ninth-ranked Bruins rallied to defeat Long Beach State 7-3 in their second game on Friday at the Long Beach Marriott Invitational. The Bruins improve to 18-4, while the 49ers fall to 13-8. Senior Donna Kerr picked up the win to move to 6-1, striking out five and giving up only two hits, three unearned runs and three NINE-TIME PACIFIC-10 CONFERENCE CHAMPIONS (1988, 1989, 1990, 1991, 1993, 1999, 2002, 2006, 2009) UCLA SOFTBALL WEEKLY RELEASE • MARCH 22, 2011 • PAGE 3 walks in a complete-game effort. Kerr had 1-2-3 innings in the second and third, striking out a pair in the first and fifth frames. The Bruins got on the board on the first pitch of the game, as Schroeder launched her second home run of the season, a 230foot shot to center, to make it 1-0. UCLA tried to rally two outs later following a double to right-center by Harrison and back-to-back walks to freshman Kellie Fox and junior Dani Yudin. But Erin JonesWesley induced freshman Alyssa Tiumalu into a groundout to third to end the inning. The 49ers took advantage of a couple of Bruin miscues to score three unearned runs in the bottom of the first. Bree Stephan was hit to open things up and Megan Denio walked. Caitrin DeBaun then laid down a sacrifice to DiSalvatore at third, but the throw to first was wide, allowing Stephan to score, Denio to move to third and DeBaun to advance to second. The Bruins were almost out of it two outs later, but Christina Schallig blooped a single just over the head of DiSalvatore to plate Denio to make it 2-1. DeBaun then scored on a passed ball to bring home the 49ers’ third run. UCLA got one of the runs back in the second with a two-out rally. Schroeder singled up the middle, Bates singled through the left side and DiSalvatore singled to center to cut the deficit to 3-2. The Bruins had a bad break in the top of the third that would have tied up the game. With two outs, Tiumalu walked and junior Marti Reed laced a double to the spacious gap in left-center which would have brought in a run, but the ball bounced over the fence for a ground-rule double. Jones-Wesley then induced senior Amy Crawford into a groundout to short to end the threat. UCLA didn’t wait for two outs to get things going in the fourth, scoring a pair of runs to re-take the lead. Schroeder connected on her second homer of the game and third of the season to left-center on a 2-1 pitch to even the score at three. Bates and DiSalvatore followed with back-to-back singles and both moved up a base on a fly out to left by Harrison. Fox then lifted a deep fly ball to center to plate Bates to give the Bruins a 4-3 lead. The Bruins added two more in the fifth. Tiumalu doubled to left to start the inning and was pinch-run for by senior Grace Murray, who one out later moved to third on a single to center by freshman Talee Snow. Then Schroeder, who had already left the yard twice, caught Long Beach napping, as she laid down a squeeze bunt to score Murray to make it 5-3. Bates followed with a double to rightcenter to bring in Snow to up the advantage to 6-3. UCLA added another run in the sixth on its third homer of the game. Harrison launched a 1-1 pitch out to left for her team-best seventh of the season to make it 7-3. Kelly Inouye-Perez recorded her 200th-career coaching victory in Friday’s first game at the Long Beach Invitational, as senior GiOnna DiSalvatore and junior Andrea Harrison each had a pair of hits in the ninth-ranked Bruins’ 5-3 win over Sacramento State. Seven of the nine Bruin starters had hits, as UCLA posted nine as a team. Freshman Jessica Hall picked up the win in the circle to improve to 11-3 on the year, striking out five and giving up three runs, eight hits and three walks in a complete-game effort. The Bruins (17-4) got a pair of gift runs in the bottom of the first. With two outs and DiSalvatore at first after reaching on a fielder’s choice, Harrison doubled to left-center to put two in scoring position. Freshman Kellie Fox then tapped a ball to second, but Devin Caldwell had it go through her legs into right field, allowing DiSalvatore and Harrison to score to make it 2-0. UCLA added another in the second. With one out, sophomore Devon Lindvall was hit and moved to second on a single to center by junior Katie Schroeder. One out later, DiSalvatore singled up the middle to bring home Lindvall for the Bruins’ third run. The Hornets (4-9) had their first good chance in the top of the fourth. With Paige Martin at first and two outs, Megan Schaefer singled to left to put a pair on base and both runners moved into scoring position on a wild pitch. But Hall got Molly Smith to ground out to short to end the threat. The Hornets battled back to tie it in the top of the fifth. With one out, Kelli Frye slapped a single in front of the circle and moved to second on a bunt single to third by Alyssa Nakken. Shannon Kaufman then singled up the middle to bring home Frye to make it 3-1, as Nakken and Kaufman each moved up a base on the throw home. Emily McCormick followed with a single up the middle to plate both runners to even the score at three. The Hornets had a chance to take the lead after they loaded the bases, but Smith struck to end the inning. The Bruins rallied in the bottom of the fifth. Dani Yudin singled to left to start off the inning and was pinch-run for by senior Grace Murray, who advanced to second and then third on a pair of passed balls. One out later, Hall blooped a single to center to plate Murray to make it 4-3. With freshman Talee Snow running for Hall at first, Lindvall walked to put a pair on base. One out later, sophomore B.B. Bates singled to center to bring in Snow to make it 5-3. ALYSSA TIUMALU NAMED PAC-10 PLAYER OF THE WEEK Freshman Alyssa Tiumalu was named Pacific-10 Conference Player of the Week on March 1 after posting hits in all six games for the Bruins last week, going 10-for-16 (.625) with two home runs, five RBI and five runs scored in helping UCLA to a 4-2 record. Tiumalu began the week at Cal State Northridge on Wednesday, reaching in all three plate appearances on a double, a walk and a hit by pitch. She also scored a run. Tiumalu extended her hitting streak to 11 with hits in every game last week and hit her first two collegiate home runs, including a walk-off shot in a victory on Sunday against Northwestern. The weekend began against #4 Florida on Friday, as Tiumalu went 2-for-3 and accounted for the Bruins’ lone run on her first collegiate homer, a solo shot in the second. In the nightcap against #6 Oklahoma, the freshman had another two-hit game, adding a run scored and a walk to reach in all three of her plate appearances. After recording a single versus #8 Tennessee on Saturday, Tiumalu had quite the encore to end the weekend on Sunday. Against Northwestern, the freshman posted her second, walk-off hit in as many weekends, belting a two-run homer in the bottom of the eighth inning to propel the Bruins to a 5-4 victory. In the second game on Sunday against Ohio State, Tiumalu notched her first three-hit game on three singles, adding a pair of RBI and scoring a run. Tiumalu slugged 1.062 for the week and had a .684 on base percentage. She also did not commit an error in 46 attempts behind the plate. On the season, she leads the Bruins with a .457 batting average, adding two homers and 10 runs batted in. DUO NAMED TO PLAYER OF THE YEAR WATCH LIST Senior GiOnna DiSalvatore and junior Andrea Harrison have been named to the initial watch list for the 10th Annual USA Softball National Collegiate Player of the Year Award, as announced by the Amateur Softball Association of America. The award, which is considered the most prestigious honor in Division I women’s collegiate softball, is designed to recognize outstanding athletic achievement by female collegiate softball players across the country. Past winners of the award include former Bruin great Stacey Nuveman. Megan Langenfeld, the Most Outstanding Player of the WCWS in 2010, was a top three finalist a year ago. The 2011 preseason watch list is comprised of 50 players representing 36 schools and 15 different NCAA Division I Conferences with the Pacific-10 Conference leading the way with seven schools represented. The list includes 23 seniors, 12 juniors and 15 sophomores. The ASA will announce the 25 finalists on April 13. A player does not have to appear on this initial watch list to be considered as a top 25 finalist. However, once the top 25 finalists are named the winner of the award will come from that list. Freshmen qualify for the top 25 list once they have competed at the collegiate level. Just days before the start of postseason play, a list of 10 finalists will be named and released on May 11. The Bruins also had TH EAR AT three players named to the All-Region team and 10 honored by the Pac-10. ECORD In 2009, she led the Bruins to a Pacific-10 Conference Championship, as UCLA went 45-11 overall and 16-5 in league play. She was named Pac-10 Coach of the Year and earned her 100th career victory on Feb. 22 against Maryland. In 2008, the Bruins went 51-9 and advanced to the Women’s College World Series, finishing second in the Pac-10 with a 17-4 record. In her first season at the helm of UCLA in 2007, Inouye-Perez posted a 37-18 overall record and a 12-9 Pac-10 mark (t-3rd). Over Inouye-Perez’s four seasons, the Bruins have earned 11 All-American awards, 18 All-Region honors and 33 All-Pac-10 accolades. Inouye-Perez, just the third head coach in UCLA softball history, officially took over the reins from Sue Enquist on Jan. 1, 2007. Enquist announced her retirement as head coach on Sept. 26, 2006. No stranger to the Bruin dugout, Inouye-Perez starts her 23rd straight season in Westwood in 2011. She is a link to four decades of Bruin softball success, joining the UCLA softball program as a freshman in 1989. Inouye-Perez’s time is highlighted by seven NCAA Championships and eight Pac10 titles in her previous 22 years, spending five campaigns as a player and 13 as an assistant. Over Inouye-Perez’s 13 seasons (1994-2006) as an assistant coach, UCLA was 617-150-1 (.804) and appeared in the NCAA title game seven times, winning the NCAA Championship in the 1999, 2003 and 2004 seasons. The Bruins also won three Pac-10 titles during that span (1999, 2002, 2006) and in 2004 were named the National Coaching Staff of the Year by the National Fastpitch Coaches Association (NFCA). Inouye-Perez’s primary responsibility as an assistant coach was guiding the Bruin pitchers and catchers, a list which includes many of the most honored and recognizable names in collegiate softball. Behind the dish, where Inouye-Perez also starred as a three-time All-Pac-10 honoree during her playing days at UCLA, she helped mold and influence arguably the best catcher in the history of USA Softball in Stacey Nuveman. Under Inouye-Perez’s tutelage, Nuveman became a three-time Pac-10 Player of the Year, four-time, first-team All-American and the NCAA’s all-time single season K I -P 5 Y H C 17 Y UCLA UCLA, 1993 R : 203-54 and career home run leader. Since the Pac-10 Conference began issuing a Pitcher of the Year Award, UCLA has been honored with two winners, Courtney Dale in 1999 and Keira Goerl in 2003. Among the other pitching highlights accomplished by the Bruins over her 13 years as an assistant included at least one All-American award earned by a UCLA pitcher in 12 of those campaigns, including DeeDee Weiman, four-time Olympian Tanya Harding and two-time Olympian Amanda Freed. In addition, nearly every UCLA pitching record has been set during the time Inouye-Perez has overseen the Bruin battery and the top four pitchers on UCLA’s career wins list, Goerl, Selden, Freed and B’Ann Burns, were coached by her. Inouye-Perez was an exceptionally strong fielder behind the dish for the Bruins. She made her mark immediately as a collegiate player, earning first-team All-Pac-10 as a true freshman and second-team as a sophomore, leading the Bruins to the 1989 and 1990 NCAA Championships before receiving a medical redshirt in 1991 due to shoulder surgery. She came back strong in 1992, picking up second-team All-Pac-10 honors as the Bruins once again won the national championship and finished with a 54-2 record, the fewest losses in a season in program history. Inouye-Perez also was named to the 1992 All-Women’s College World Series Team, going 5-for-12 (.417) with four RBI during WCWS play. She wrapped up her career as a fifth-year senior in 1993 with an NCAA runner-up finish. Impressively, Inouye-Perez did not commit a single fielding error during her final two seasons. Among the UCLA pitchers during her five seasons as a player were Lisa Longaker and Lisa Fernandez, both of whom were named to the NCAA’s 25th Anniversary All-WCWS Team. During her UCLA career, Inouye-Perez played in 22 Women’s College World Series games, a mark that is tied for third-best in UCLA history behind only Lisa Fernandez and Kristy Howard (23). Inouye-Perez graduated from UCLA in 1993 with a B.A. in psychology and earned her master’s degree in physical education from Azusa Pacific University in 2004. Prior to college, Inouye-Perez was one of the top players during her ASA days, winning four national championships, with the Panthers (1984, `85 and `89) and the Raiders (1986). She also competed on an international level in Japan in 1985 and in Peru in 1987 (Pan American Tournament) and followed her collegiate career with time playing on the NPF Pro Tour. Inouye-Perez and her husband, Gerardo Perez, currently reside in Cerritos. Along with Kelly’s exploits on the diamond, Gerardo competed as a catcher/DH for Cerritos College from 1988-90 and helped lead the Falcons to the 1989 Junior College National Championship. After a stellar career at Cerritos, he went on to compete at Loyola Marymount, earning first-team All-West Coast Conference honors his junior and senior seasons. He currently teaches health and coaches baseball at Gahr High School in Cerritos. The couple has two children, Michael (11) and Kylie (6).
