SANTA ROSA SYMPHONY LEAGUE 50 SANTA ROSA AVENUE, SUITE 410, SANTA ROSA, CA 95404 522-8786 — Leave message PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE November 2013 Happy fall ya'll, sorry, couldn't resist. I am delighted to tell you our Festival of Parties "Blue Book" is almost completed and it is one of the most exciting books we have ever put together. In December we will have our famous Holiday Jazz event in Alexander Valley with all the trimmings. Wine, food and the wonderful Doug Morton and his group, Del Sol. January we will have a Lunch 'n' Learn with Jennie Orvino talking about the book she authored called Poetry, Politics and Passion. Interesting and informative I'm sure. On February 6th we will have our much loved Bridge Luncheon and Fashion show in Kenwood. February also brings us another Lunch 'n' Learn with authors Melanie Greaves and Pamella Nesbit and "Through the Lives of Two Women" and many more terrific events through the season. One more tease for you. Charlie Schlangen will perform in the Deerfield Ranch Winery Cave for us. Yes, a cave. With his clear, robust baritone voice he will awe you with a sound that can only occur in the confines of an acoustically perfect cave such as Deerfield’s. He will be accompanied by the lovely soprano Susan WittButler. MUSIC EDUCATION Our young orchestras have been rehearsing for months and are weeks from their first season concerts of 2013-2014! The Youth Orchestra will begin by dazzling two full audiences (about 2,500 combined) of elementary school classes in the Free Concerts for Youth. The rest of the month will feature performances by all our young orchestras and workshops, from the exuberant Preparatory Orchestra, to the accomplished Repertory Orchestra, and the polished excellence of the Young People’s Chamber Orchestra and the Youth Orchestra. The Young People’s Chamber Orchestra and Youth Orchestra give their combined fall concert on Saturday, November 16, 3pm, in Weill Hall. The program features recognized masterworks by Dvorak, Rimsky-Korsakov, Rossini and Britten, as well as lesser known gems by Biber, Scheidt, and Johann Bernhard Bach. Then on Sunday, November 24, in a 3pm concert at the Sonoma Country Day School, the Preparatory and Repertory Orchestras bring their youthful flourish to selections from Tchaikovsky's Nutcracker, in addition to works by Ippolitov-Ivanov, Brahms, Sibelius and Grieg. Tickets to hear these exciting orchestras are now available through the Santa Rosa Symphony Patron Services. (Details in the box at right) Our String Orchestra Workshop will complete its first session with a short recital at the Santa Rosa Junior College, and the new El Sistema-inspired Simply Strings program will give its first ever performance. The Simply Strings students have just received their violins after weeks of preparation, and it will be a wonderful experience to see them perform. For information about Simply Strings or String Orchestra Workshop performances, please call the Education Department. With all the support the Santa Rosa Symphony League offers to our education programs, we would love to see your smiling faces in the audience. These concerts will be both invigorating and heart-warming.
