Your feedback to Us
Monash is committed to excellence in education and regularly seeks feedback from students, employers
and staff. One of the key formal ways students have to provide feedback is through the Student
Evaluation of Teaching and Units (SETU) survey. The University’s student evaluation policy requires that
every unit is evaluated each year. Students are strongly encouraged to complete the surveys. The
feedback is anonymous and provides the Faculty with evidence of aspects that students are satisfied
and areas for improvement.
For more information on Monash’s educational strategy, see:
www.monash.edu.au/about/monash-directions/ and on student evaluations, see:
www.policy.monash.edu/policy-bank/academic/education/quality/student-evaluation-policy.html
Previous Student Evaluations of this Unit
Students should be aware that this unit is for students who are ready to create their own
pathways not for students who want someone else to do it for them.
The unit encourages the individual to take control of their own learning and future. It is an incredibly
valuable unit.
Encourages some people to get off their bums.
Taught me independence, self-sufficiency and gave me great confidence. There is so much info on
the Moodle site and mostly very interesting and useful and relevant to our future careers.think this is the
greatest unit available at university.
I have been exposed to many work environments and have learnt more about the world outside of
university and myself than I have in my past 4 years. We have an opportunity to write and express our
feelings on a current marketing issue. We get a write a diary (log book) which I've never had tolerance
for. We are forced to work and be exposed to what almost everyone at university has come to study for,
to get a job and earn some money in our favourite fields of work.

Second marking
Where an assessment task is given a fail grade by an examiner, that piece of work will be marked again
by a second examiner who will independently evaluate the work, and consult with the first marker. No
student will be awarded a fail grade for an assessment task or unit without a second examiner confirming
the result.
Note: Exceptions to this are individual pieces of assessment contributing 10% or less of the final mark,
unless the total of such pieces exceeds 30% of the final mark.
Return of final marks
Faculty policy states that 'the final mark that a student receives for a unit will be determined by the Board
of Examiners on the recommendation of the Chief Examiner taking into account all aspects of
assessment'.
The final mark for this unit will be released by the Board of Examiners on the date nominated in the
Faculty Calendar. Student results will be accessible through the my.monash portal.

Assessment Tasks

Assessment task 1
Title:
Academic Report
Due date:
As agreed to
Details of task:
The Academic Report is worth 60% of the assessment for the Internship and should be
about 6000-7000 words in length. As MKX3631 is a final year unit a minimum of 20
academic references should be used in the report.
It is expected that you will have discussed the broad topic area of the academic report at
the beginning of the internship period. This discussion will have taken place with your
academic supervisor and if the academic supervisor suggests, with the host organisation
supervisor as well, and you will have their agreement on its suitability.
Use the Library website to ensure you read and utilise a sufficient number of refereed
academic journal articles to substantiate your arguments / contentions. The Monash
Library has developed a series of special sites just for you, including several just for
Marketing students.
* Each student’s supervised work experience will be different because of the wide range
of organisations we work with and the various roles you might undertake. However there
are some common marking criteria for the Academic Report. Your report should
demonstrate the following:
Assessment 1 - Academic Report
Task Components
Value
Address academic objectives
10%
Ensure you meet the academic objectives, as provided by your academic
supervisor. As specified by your academic supervisor, this may also require
inclusion and satisfaction of Business Objectives.
Relevance to your studies
20%
Apply relevant academic marketing theory to your internship project /
organisation. Identify and critique the organisation’s activities in terms of the
academic theory and make recommendations where relevant.
Academic Research and referencing
30%
Undertake appropriate research, and develop a Literature Review on your topic
of interest. Use this ‘new’ knowledge you have gained to show how the
organisation could improve its operations. Make reference to relevant theory in
the report. Ensure you use the QManual – it DOES matter.
* Look at the weighting we give 'academic research AND referencing'. This is
not an area you want to only give scant attention to.
Management recommendations
Given your understanding of the industry in which your organisation operates,
think strategically to make recommendations on how the organisation can

improve or gain 'learnings' from, using the knowledge you have gained in both
your time there AND from your Literature Review.USE the academic literature to
prove your points.
Professional report writing and communication

Write the report in an appropriate business style as indicated on your MOODLE
site.

* We require you to use the 'report' format unless you have cleared an alternative format
with your Unit Coordinator BEFORE you start your written work.
* Type face must be Times Roman, and size for body copy must be 12 point. Line
spacing must be 1.5. You need to justify left and right margins. Print on one side of the

someone else to proof-read it before you finish it off for grammar and sense-making.
* Make sure the Faculty Cover Sheet is on the front of your assignment
* Assignment (with attached Cover Sheet) to be stapled in top left hand corner

Assessment task 2
Title:
Reflective Log Book
Due date:
As agreed with supervisor
Details of task:
As you begin the hunt for your Internship there are some key points to remember. You are
gaining valuable experience both from searching and from your host organisation, so you
will need to set up a file called ‘Reflective Log Book’ and begin your daily entries. A
8
Assessment Requirements
pro-forma is available on MOODLE. This document is a record of your learnings, including
specific tasks and experiences and, more importantly, your reflections on what you are
doing and the value you are taking out of the internship.
Record practical details like the day, date, activity and time spent. Include visits to your
academic supervisor as well as time spent at work and in the library or at home working
on internship-related matters. It may be relevant to include how you went about securing
the internship position in the first place.
You may also wish to keep a list of people and their titles and functions for reference in
the future for job opportunities.
BUT most importantly, at the end of each day you must reflect on and record what has
been achieved each day – how your studies and this practical application are benefiting
you; the challenges you face and how you respond and resolve them.
Our experience tells us that you are best served by starting your Reflective Log Book
when you decided to enrol, so you can 'observe yourself' as you go through the various
experiences of finding your 'host', all the way through to the completion of your Internship.
And if you are in ANY way unsure of what 'Reflective Practice' is, or of how to write a
Reflective Journal or Log Book, READ about the area in databases as varied as Google
Scholar, through Business Source Premier, through to Social Science websites.
A potted diary will get you a fail - no one wants that.
Assessment 2 - Reflective log book
Task Components
Detailed daily entries in your log book from enrolement to completion of
internship
Insightful (self) analysis of your participation in the workplace, including
identification of four critical issues and/or challenges you faced, and your
responses to them. How did it make you feel?
Reflect on what you were doing, the value you were taking out of the internship,
and the value you were contributing to the host organisation.
Most importantly, reflect on what YOU learned about YOU.

Assessment task 3
Title:
Host Organisation Assessment
Due date:
After the internship is complete
Details of task:
The organisation is asked to assess your performance during the Internship via the
Assessment Form that can be found on Blackboard. This asks your supervisor to identify
the opportunities that you were given and how he/she assesses your abilities in view of
these opportunities. Although your work supervisor is asked to send the completed
Assessment Form directly to your academic supervisor, it is important that you should
have had the opportunity to discuss your performance with your manager at your
organisation at the end of the Internship. Valuable feedback can be obtained from your
organisation supervisor if you take this chance to discuss your performance. You may
also find it appropriate at this occasion if your assessment is good, to ask for a separate
reference letter or if the individual will be prepared to act as a referee, or if there are any
career openings within the organisation.
Assessment 3 - Company Assessment
Task Components
Effective written and/or verbal communication skills as expected at a
professional level.
Does student display the skills to meet the level of competence for a position in
the type of organisation where student is undertaking the Internship?

receive a copy of this Marking Assessment Sheet should provide a self addressed
adhesive label when they submit their work so that the Marking Assessment Sheet can be
returned to them after the University releases the final results.
