2014 Tinker Graduate Field Research Award Competition

The University of Georgia Latin American and Caribbean Studies Institute (LACSI) is pleased to announce that it has been awarded a 2014 Tinker Foundation, Inc. Field Research Grant. With funding support also provided by the Franklin College of Arts and Sciences and the UGA

Graduate School, travel awards are granted to highly qualified graduate students from any discipline interested in conducting preliminary field research in the Spanish or Portuguesespeaking Latin American and Caribbean region, excluding Puerto Rico, during summer 2014.

Preference is given to doctoral level applicants who have applied for the LACSI graduate certificate. Information on the graduate certificate may be found at: http://www.lacsiuga.org/graduate-certificate-requirements/ . Awards can be used for international airfare and in-country travel, as well as associated country entry/exit fees, travel insurance, visas, etc.

A complete copy of the proposal with title page, narrative and budget, as well as application form, should be submitted electronically to lacsiuga@gmail.com

by no later than 5:00 PM

Monday, February 24, 2014.

Please note: the proposal’s title page must include research title, your name, citizenship, home department, degree sought and e-mail address. The additional, required letter of recommendation and transcripts must be received by LACSI no later than the

February 24, 2014 deadline. Award recipients will be notified during the week of March 10-

14, 2014 . All information, application materials, and sample proposals can be found on the

Applications must include:

° The application form (download from the LACSI website). Scan and send completed form electronically ( lacsiuga@gmail.com

);

° A 3-4 page narrative of the research proposal with estimated travel expense budget. The proposal must include a title page with: research title, your full name, citizenship, home department, degree sought and e-mail address;

° A letter of recommendation from student's Graduate Coordinator or major professor, scanned and sent electronically on department letterhead, dropped off or mailed to

LACSI, 290 South Hull St., Athens, GA 30602;

° Official transcripts from the UGA registrar and a language ability certification. Language certification can be obtained through LACSI by contacting

Paul Duncan ( pduncan@uga.edu

). Native speakers of Spanish or Portuguese do not need language certification (see application form for details). Official transcripts may be mailed or dropped off to LACSI.

Note:

The UGA Office of International Education (OIE) will communicate with recipients of the award to provide information regarding waivers and insurance requirements.
