Course Description
This course is designed to cultivate proper attitude, and behavior patterns needed to create a successful cosmetologist. The Kentucky statutes and regulations, safety, bacteriology, sanitation, infection control, first aid treatment, structure and disorders of the nail are studied. An introduction to the basic fundamentals of hair, skin, and nail care, hair styling and shaping, manicures and pedicures, chemical and thermal services, and wigs. The students in developing manipulative skills and practicing procedures utilizes mannequins and classmates. After 300 hours students begin to apply procedures on clients under the direct supervision of the instructor.

Theory class : test scores, quizzes and workbooks will account for 100% of this grade.

Lab : evaluations on assigned task and live work on clients and learners will account for
100% of this grade
C.
Observation: appearance, interacting with learners, teachers, and clients, applications to assignments, attitude, and professionalism will account for 100% of this grade.
D.
Attendance: : Learners must attend 450 clock hours in order to receive 100% of this grade.
Learners that receive 440-449 clock hours will receive 50% of this grade.
Less than 440 clock hours will result in a 0% of this grade .

Time frame of course schedule subject to change at the discretion of the instructor due to inclement weather and circumstances unforeseen.
Inclement Weather Class Policy/Procedure
During periods of inclement weather, all courses scheduled BEFORE 9:30 a.m.
, will be cancelled .
Learners will be asked to report at 9:30 for their 9:30 courses. Class hours will be made up at the end of the semester or on a non instructional Friday.
General Class Make-up/Late Assignment Class Policy/Procedure (including weather related make-up plan)
1.
Learners who have missed a test or an evaluation because of an excused absence will be allowed to take a makeup exam or evaluation if the learner makes arrangements on or before the first day back to school following the absence, otherwise, a (0) will be recorded for the test score.
2.
Only two make-up exams will be allowed per semester for an excused absence.
3.
Make-up exams or evaluations will not be administered in the same format as the scheduled class exam (different exam format, no open book, no word bank, no test privileges, etc.)
4.
No make-up exams will be allowed with an unexused absence.
5.
No make-up exams or evaluations will be administered on the last week of the semester.
6.
No retake exams will be allowed in theory and only one retake evaluation for lab testing will be administered.
7.
Take home exams must be submitted on the instructed due date or said penalties will apply; a.
10 points per day will be deducted from possible score up to 5 days. b.
Exams will not be accepted after the 5 th day and learners will receive a “0”for the exam.
8.
Learners who have missed their morning/evening assignments due to unexcused absenteeism, late arrival, or early departure from class or lab will receive a “0” for assignments missed.
Attendance Class Policy/Procedure
A learner’s attendance in class is very important. An absence from class means loss of instructional time regardless of the reason.
1.
Learners who miss class due to illness, a death in the family, or other compelling reasons, should notify their instructors before hand, if possible, or the first day back to school to see if makeup work can be arranged.
2.
Learners who do not return from lunch without notifying the instructor will lose 10% of their overall grade.
3.
Learners who do not attend a minimum of 440 clock hours per semester will receive a 0% for the attendance grade.
4.
Learners must be in complete official uniform dress code before they can sign in to receive clock hours of attendance.

CLASS PROCEDURE:
1.
Learners must turn all electronic devices to “silent” while receiving clock hours. The use of electronic devices will not be tolerated during class time.
2.
Learners who cause trouble or who are disruptive in the program will be asked to sign out and report to the Division Chair.
3.
Learners will only be allowed to sign in if they are in complete official dress code (clean uniform, lab coat, white shoes, name tag, and hair/ make-up done). Appearance, professionalism, and interactions with students, teachers, and clients will be monitored and graded.
4.
Learners who refuse assigned clients or to be an assigned model will be instructed to sign out for the day, during this absence no tests or evaluations can be made up.
5.
Learners are not allowed to bring children during the lecture or lab class. No loitering in the department will be allowed by family and friends during class and lab hours.
6.
Learners will be required to attend and participate in all mandatory field trips.
7.
Learners are required to complete all morning assignments before going to lunch and all evening assignments before the end of the day. Assigned clients can be substituted for evening assignments at the discretion of the instructor.
8.
Learners who do not complete morning and evening assignments without prior approval from the instructor will not receive clock hours for that day (regardless of the time of signin).
9.
Learners must sign in upon arrival to the department. Failure to sign in will result in a loss of time for that learner. Learners that fail to sign in or arrive late will only get credit for the time that he/she has checked in with the instructor. Learners are not allowed to sign in or out for any other student.

Plagiarism Class Policy
There is a zero tolerance policy for plagiarism in the Cosmetology Program. This includes all theory classroom assignments and practical/clinical assignments. All work must be done on personal manikins unless other arrangements are made by the instructor.

Withdrawal Class Policy/Procedure
A student may officially withdraw from any class up to and including the date of mid-term with a W grade assigned to the student’s record. After the date of midterm and through the last class of the semester or session, any student may officially request to withdraw from a course and receive a W which may be given at the discretion of the instructor according to the following criteria:
After midterm, students must have attended at least 50% (225) of total clock hours.
After midterm, records must show that students made a reasonable attempt to pass this course.

Learners needing specific accommodations should contact the local disabilities service representative to complete an Accommodations Plan which will ensure that the Learner receive full benefits and that the instructor is aware and can make the proper adjustments in his/her courses.

Inside/Outside Classroom Interaction:
Although class time is not designated as laboratory it is normally referred to as “lecture,” learners are encouraged to participate in class by asking questions on material being analyzed. Learners should come to class prepared and ready to work. During lab hours learners are to be working on the manikins, this time is utilized to learn techniques of hair styling and scalp care.
Learners can also practice manicuring and pedicuring on classmates. Learners are expected to work on these skills until they are mastered.
