During this time, men and women typically wore distinguishing gowns to identify various professions, trades, or religious orders. Scholars wore the same general type of clothing, including gowns, cloaks with hoods attached, or separate hoods and caps. Eventually, aspects of academic apparel were determined by each of the universities to distinguish the faculties as well as the different degrees of learning. Throughout the years, styles of dress changed among the citizens, but the universities maintained their respective academic regalia requirements. While the academic dress of European institutions is diverse, the American academic dress—adopted in 1895—was established through a defined set of regulations. The codes were revised in 1932, 1959, and 1986 by a committee appointed by the American Council on Education. These codes recommend that the academic regalia during commencement make a distinction between students receiving their bachelor’s, master’s, and doctorate degrees. Gowns for bachelor’s degree have pointed sleeves and are worn closed. Master’s degree gowns have oblong sleeves that open at the wrist. The gown for the doctorate degree holders has bell-shaped sleeves that may be worn open or closed. Black is the recommended color for gowns, but some colleges select alternative colors. The hoods vary in length depending upon the degree conferred. The bachelor’s hoods are three feet and master’s hoods are three and one-half feet in length. The doctor’s hood has a rounded base and is four feet long. The width of the velvet or velveteen border is two inches for bachelor’s, three inches for master’s, and five inches for doctor’s hoods. The color of the border indicates the field of study, and the lining is in the official color of the institution conferring the degree. The mortarboard cap is standard, but recipients of doctorates may wear a gold tassel fastened to the middle point of the top of the cap, while all others wear black. Graduates wear the tassel on the right side, moving it to the left when their degree is conferred. Faculty participating in commencement wear the tassel to the left throughout the ceremony. The velvet border colors on the hoods for University of the Sciences in Philadelphia are: Teal . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .Physical Therapy Olive Green . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .Pharmacy/PharmD Golden Yellow. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .Science Slate Blue . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .Occupational Therapy Dark Blue . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .PhD Drab . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .MBA Salmon . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .MPH Graduates who have been designated as Summa Cum Laude, Magna Cum Laude, and Cum Laude are bestowed with honor cords in the following colors: Gold . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .Summa Cum Laude Silver . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .Magna Cum Laude Bronze . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .Cum Laude Oath of a Pharmacist I promise to devote myself to a lifetime of service to others through the profession of pharmacy.
