Activity: Triton SPIE General Body Meeting, Spring Quarter Date: Monday, April 23rd, 2007, 7:00PM – 8:30PM Location: California Institute for Telecommunications and Information Technology Description: Quarterly meeting of all club members / social networking event; appetizers and refreshments served; presentation on the history, progress, and future of Nanotechnology (theme for Spring Quarter 2007); review of positions for election; presentations on behalf of candidates for chapter office. Explanation of coursework and research conducted on campus in Optics & Photonics field. Activity: Lab Tour, Photonic Systems & Optical Networking Laboratory Date: Wednesday, May 30th, 2007, 4:30PM – 5:00PM Location: California Institute for Telecommunications and Information Technology Description: Tour of prominent laboratory in optical networking & photonic systems field. Explanation and demonstration of 10Gbps 2000km optical link in presence of real-world impairments; discussion of current research frontiers in optical networking and ultra-fast communications. Activity: SPIE Optics & Photonics 2007 Date: Sunday, August 10th, 2007 – Thursday, August 14th, 2007 Location: San Diego Convention Center, San Diego, CA Description: Attendance of annual SPIE meeting, Student Leadership workshop, exhibition, technical programs by all officers. Participation in exhibit hall – table, poster, and distribution of fliers summarizing past and proposed future activities of UCSD Triton SPIE Chapter. Activity: Guest Lecture (SPIE Visiting Lecture Program), Prof. Ali Serpenguzel of Koc. Univ. Concurrent with tours of UCSD MBE reactor facility and optical communications laboratory. Activity: General Body Meeting, Fall Quarter Date: Wednesday, October 24th, 2007 Location: Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering, UC San Diego Description: Quarterly meeting of all club members / social networking event; appetizers and refreshments served; presentation on and group discussion on Fourier Optics (theme for Fall Quarter 2007); summary of planned activities for quarter and entire academic year. Activity: SPIE Tabling, UCSD E-games Date: Tuesday, February 19h, 2008, 11:00AM – 2:00PM Location: Warren Mall, Earl Warren College, UC San Diego Description: SPIE recruitment event targeted at engineering majors and the greater UCSD student body. Demonstration of thermal power of focused sunlight using custom-fabricated 2m Fresnel lens with ultra-fine annular period; incinerated cardboard, plastic, metal, and concrete using said lens. Hands-on display of fluorite components (lenses, attenuators, prisms) used in ArF Excimer lasers for the latest-generation of 193nm immersion lithography. Activity: SPIE Holography Workshop, UCSD Enspire Date: Wednesday, February 20h, 2008, 9:30AM – 11:00PM Location: Undergraduate Optics & Photonics Laboratory, UC San Diego Description: Hands-on holography workshop targeted at eight grade students visiting from Gompers Charter School and Pershing Middle School. Outreach event designed to raise awareness of engineering studies and careers in optics-related fields. Several groups of a dozen students participated in the recording and developing of white-light reflection holograms of objects of their choosing. Short discussion of the physics and applications of holograms. Activity: SPIE Holography Workshop, UCSD Engineering Outreach Extravaganza Date: Wednesday, February 20th, 2008, 11:30AM – 2:00PM Location: Undergraduate Optics & Photonics Laboratory, UC San Diego Description: Hands-on holography workshop targeted at UCSD affiliates intended to promote SPIE among the student body. Students participated in the recording and developing of whitelight reflection holograms of objects of their choosing. Short discussion of the physics and applications of holograms. 4 Activity: Impulse Semi-Formal Dance, 2008 UCSD Celebration of National Engineer’s Week Date: Friday, February 22th, 2008, 5:00PM – 12:00AM Location: Great Hall, Eleanor Roosevelt College, UC San Diego Description: Designed, prepared, and implemented multi-spectral light show to conclude celebration of National Engineer’s Week. Laser light show consisting of programmable 350mW red-yellow-green laser scanner, two ultra-high resolution video projections of audio visualizations, fog machine, computer-generated hologram display, vivid-green fluorescent fountains consisting fluorescein-dry-ice mixture pumped by Luxeon high-brightness LEDs. Activity: Optical Fiber Conference / National Fiber Optic Engineers Conference Date: Sunday, February 24th, 2008 – Thursday, February 28th, 2008 Location: San Diego Convention Center, San Diego, CA Description: Attendance of technical conference, short courses, exhibition. Activity: 2nd Installment of the SPIE Holography Workshop, UCSD Engineering Outreach Event Proposed Date: Thursday, April 3rd, 2008, 9:00AM – 11:00AM, 2:00PM – 4:00PM Proposed Location: Undergraduate Optics & Photonics Laboratory, UC San Diego Tentative Description: Hands-on holography workshop targeted at over 100 students visiting from several local high schools. Outreach event designed to raise awareness of engineering studies and careers in optics-related fields. Eight groups of a dozen students participate in the recording and developing of white-light reflection holograms of objects of their choosing. Demonstration of optical coherence tomography, scanning laser ophthalmoscope, retinal angiogram, adaptive optical imaging systems and related devices. Explanation of common ocular impairments.
