Backup and reuse your Windows 7 OEM License
(SLIC) Certificate, Key, Token and More!

Why you should read this:
If you own an OEM licensed pc (factory pre-installed), you will sometime not be able to fetch
licensing information and certificates if you want to perform a clean installation. Here are few
steps to activate Windows if you do not know the OEM Key.
This document focuses on SLIC v 2.1... Your BIOS must support it. If not, please flash / upgrade
your BIOS. Contact vendor for more information.
First, you need to download this tool SLIC Toolkit 3.2. This will scan and display the SLIC
table in your BIOS. Note that, same task can be achieved from the RW-Everything utility, but,
you have to save those manually. Read my previous notes to learn more about this utility.
These methods have been tested and verified!
Added: If you have not saved the cert what happens? Read the Troubleshooting. I have the
method!
Download:
SLIC Toolkit 3.2: https://rapidshare.com/files/2623871520/SLIC_ToolKit_V3.2.zip
Operation:



Run the utility by double clicking on it. Better to Run as administrator by right clicking.
Under "Basic", you will see the dump and Status.
Under "Advanced", you will see the OS version, SLIC version, table IDs and health. You will also
see the PublickKey of the manufacturer. Below that, you will see BIOS Information and type,
size etc. Under that, we can see the information what we were looking for. Product Key and
Certificate. Also, you will see the path to the Token.
Other Details:
From SLP1.0, ACPI and Memory Access display some low level (highly detailed)
Strings (OEM) and Address Ranges (Valid and Invalid). For me its:
Offset
Valid Address Range
SLP OEM String
000E67C8 000E0000 - 000EFFFE Hewlett
000E6804 000E0000 - 000EFFFE Hewlett
000E689B 000E0000 - 000EFFFE Hewlett
000E690E 000E0000 - 000EFFFE Hewlett
And ACPI Information from BIOS. It contains Root System Description.

Pointer/Table, Software Licensing Desc. and Extended System Desc tables.Click "Export ACPI
Tables" in order to export it.
From "Memory Access", you will see the Linear Memory Access (Click "Dump" to show).Click
"Export" if you want to save it for later use.
Now let's get back to te main job shall we?
Saving the Key and Certificate (and token)










Click on "Advanced" tab.
Under PKey, you will see the product key (first four portions). Let's get the last portion and get
the full key. Even without a key, you CAN validate the product so do not worry!
Now you have the product key. Its time to backup the key and certificate.
Click "Backup" and then it will save the text file and certificate.
Important! Certificate ends with Cert.xrm-ms
Now you have both the cert and key. So you can use either one.
To backup the token, open the path of "Cert". Open the first portion: X:\Windows\ServiceProfile
(if you are prompted to use Administrative Elevation, click the button and commit the action.
Replace X with root partition. i.e. C).
Now, go until you see the
NetworkService\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\SoftwareProtectionPlatform. Now, within this folder,
you will see the "tokens.dat". You can backup this as well.
To save all the information as a .bin file, click "Save" button.
Use "Refresh" button to refresh the data.
Additional info:



BIOS Diag information can be saved as a .MEM file. Click
Click "Diagnose" to perform the action.
Note: If you wish to open an existing certificate, click "Open Ext. Cert." button.
This is how you should reuse the Key/Cert:
Use your Key/Cert to Activate Product:
Alternative tools: OpaTool
Method 1:





Open a Command Prompt (CMD) as I mentioned above.
Type slmgr /ipk PRODUCTKEY and press enter (Now, it will install/replace the key. Key is in the
format of XXXXX-XXXXX-XXXXX-XXXXX-XXXXX. 25 charactors in length). If it has been
installed, there will be no problems.
Type slmgr /ilc LicenseFile (HPQOEM_V2.1_Cert.xrm-ms as an example) and press enter.
You can either use the token if necessary (or cert) to the specified location mentioned above
(X:\Windows\ServiceProfile\NetworkService\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\SoftwareProtectionPlatf
orm).
Now, type slmgr /ato (Or slmgr -ato)and press enter (Stay online. For Windows 8, this may
work even if you are offline - Copmpletely off topic and activation technology is different in
Windows 8 and OEM).
Verify: slmgr /xpr (Displays Expiration Date) and slmgr /dlv (Displays detailed license
information).
Error handling (note that / can be replaced with -): Error Coes and descriptions can be found
here > http://support.microsoft.com/kb/938450



Remove pkey: slmgr /upk
Reset the licensing status: slmgr /rearm
Re-install licensing files: slmgr /rlic
So you did not back up the tokens.dat did you? No problem! Let us rebuild the token :)








Type the following commands in the order in which they are presented. Press Enter after each
command.
net stop sppsvc
cd
"C:\Windows\ServiceProfiles\LocalService\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\SoftwareProtectio
nPlatform
ren tokens.dat tokens.bar
net start sppsvc
slmgr.vbs /rilc
Reboot.
slmgr.vbs /ato
Please note:




You must check the product key with SLIC toolkit and slmgr.vbs /dlv and make sure
original key is there. If not, BEFORE DOING THE RILC:
slmgr.vbs /ipk product key
Product key has to be in the form of xxxxx-xxxxx-xxxxx-xxxxx-xxxxx
Never use the /upk option.
