DISTRICT BIDS FAREWELL TO DR. CAROLYN
ROSENBERG AND MR. TIMOTHY O’HALLORAN
Dr. Carolyn Rosenberg, who joined the Somerville
M r. Timothy O’Halloran began his career as the
Public School district in 1992 as a supervisor and was
appointed director of curriculum, instruction, and technology in 1996, retired after 19 years of service on June
30, 2011.
Dr. Rosenberg became Somerville's director of curriculum, instruction, and technology because she admired its
community of closely-knit students, staff, parents, and
administrators. She felt that the town had a common purpose: to provide the best education for its students. Her
stated philosophy reflects her belief that a collective
effort is crucial in improving education.
Dr. Rosenberg plans to continue her lifelong commitment to developing the next generation of teachers and
school leaders. She is a consultant for the Educational
Testing Service and the New Jersey Department of
Education, Division of Standards and Assessment. In the
fall, Dr. Rosenberg is joining the Rider University faculty.
assistant principal of SMS in 1991. Ater one year, Mr.
O’Halloran was appointed principal of Somerville High
School. Over the years, he has seen numerous improvements in the quality of education at SHS.
Mr. O’Halloran stated that he is looking forward to
some aspects of retirement; he is eager to have more free
time and less paperwork. He will miss the daily interactions with students who he believes are full of enthusiam
and fresh ideas. He reminds students that education is a
lifelong pursuit in which hard work leads to success.
Mr. O’Halloran plans to work as an educational consultant, advising acting school administrators and working
with many different schools. Mr. O’Halloran hopes he
will be able to share his experiences at SHS to aid other
schools.
Congratulations and best wishes to both Dr. Rosenberg
and Mr. O’Halloran on their retirements!■

SOMERVILLE HONORS 2011 TEACHERS
OF THE YEAR
Mrs. Jennifer Osborn, a first grade teacher at Van
Derveer Elementary School, has been teaching for
nine years in the Somerville Public School district.
As a committed and dedicated teacher, Mrs.
Osborn meets the needs of each of her diverse
first grade students through her committed professionalism and dedication to her students. She
works collaboratively in an inclusion classroom
to ensure the varying needs of the students
with whom she works are addressed. Mrs.
Osborn’s students f lourish as young learners
under her expertise.
Mrs. Osborn has chaired the annual Van
Derveer Family Literacy night, an evening celebration of reading and writing, which is a premier school event.
Additionally, she serves as a coach for Girls on the Run, a national program designed to empower young girls for a lifetime of self-respect and healthy
living. Mrs. Osborn, as exemplified by the dedication she shows to the children and
families of the Van Derveer School community, is the embodiment of the teacher of the year.
Mrs. Osborn states, “I love my job and I take it very seriously! As John F. Kennedy once said,
‘Children are the world’s most valuable resource and its best hope for the future.’ As a result, I
strive to provide my students with the necessary skills, guidance, and support to enable them to
reach their full potential not only in the classroom, but in the real world as well. I take pride in
creating a warm, safe, and student-centered learning environment where students feel a sense of
belonging, where mistakes are used as learning opportunities and where students’ opinions are
valued. My goal is to instill confidence, good work habits, and critical thinking skills so that one
day my students become strong, respectful, intelligent, and healthy citizens. Learning is a lifelong
process. There is not one day that goes by that I don’t learn something from my students. I am so
grateful to be doing what I love everyday and to be surrounded by so many inspiring teachers
and students. I am truly honored to be nominated as Van Derveer’s teacher of the year.” ■
Ms. Lindsey Kulis, a social studies teacher at
Somerville Middle School, has been teaching for six
years in the Somerville Public School district.
Ms. Kulis is a highly valued member of the
Somerville Middle School community. She is an
innovative teacher whose creativity, professionalism, and dedication are valued by students, colleagues, administration, and parents alike. The
creativity of Ms. Kulis’ lessons taps into each
child’s learning style as she encourages students
to embrace history and expand their knowledge
of the world around them. Her compassion is
evident in the manner in which she encourages
every student to achieve and to f lourish academically, socially, and emotionally. Ms. Kulis
provides a classroom that is nurturing, supportive,
and child-centered. The students in her charge develop the
confidence to strive and succeed. Ms. Kulis supports her colleagues and
shares her insights to foster team collaboration. Additionally, she contributes to the
school community by serving as the girls’ basketball coach for the past five years. Ms. Kulis has
also served as a Student Council advisor.
Ms. Kulis states, “It is imperative to have the students believe in their own success and to value
education as a vehicle to develop their own personal skills. Fostering the love of learning is a dayto-day experience that I enjoy.”■

VAN DERVEER HOSTS TRAVELING FARM
Van Derveer
Elementary
School was
host to a traveling farm on
June 16, 2011
with the generous funding of
the PreK-8
PTO. With the
assistance of
Farmer Eric of
Quiver Farms,
kindergarten
students were
able to pet a
donkey, a goat,
and a sheep,
while turkeys,
rabbits, ducks,
and a goose
roamed freely.
The children were delighted to learn how to
husk corn, gather eggs, herd sheep, and
make ice cream
all without leaving Van Derveer.
Thank you to the
PTO for making
this memorable
day at the farm
possible.■
