We also appointed a senior director, engineering and sustainability for the company. How have you responded to growing consumer demand for green/eco-friendly products and services? We have released our first corporate responsibility report called BK Positive Steps. The all-digital report is available online and details our key initiatives. The primary focus of our environmental initiatives is on four key areas where we believe we can have the biggest impact—energy, waste, water conservation and emissions. We’ve taken the important step of assembling a cross-functional global team to address sustainability and define key levers to become more environmentally-friendly in ways that matter to our stakeholders, make a difference to the environment and drive positive business results. Several highlights of our efforts in sustainability include: • Appointed a senior director, engineering and sustainability for the company. • Hosting Burger King Green Sessions for employees, members of the supply chain and key third-party partners to help identify BKC’s biggest opportunities for improvement and develop a realistic tactical plan for making positive changes going forward. • Evaluating and identifying the most effective environmentally-friendly design elements that can be incorporated into new restaurant construction as well as the infrastructure of our existing restaurants. Examples include reflective roof material to reduce heating, ventilation and air conditioning; testing rainwater reclamation systems; and assessing Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) certification for new buildings. • Designing an environmentally-friendly restaurant that would meet the LEED certification criteria. Also, the Restaurant Support Center is working toward a LEED certification for the building. • Established an energy management team sponsored by the company’s chief financial officer and executive vice president, global operations and is researching, identifying and implementing energy reducing initiatives throughout our global system. • Introducing the Duke Flexible Batch Broiler which reduces gas and electricity consumption up to 52 percent and electricity costs by up to 90 percent. • Utilizing Energy Star appliances for ice machines and under counter refrigeration. • Developing a FRYPOD container, which is the lightest available and uses a paper that contains 50 percent recycled content. • Introducing the BK Kids Meal Bag, which is made from 100 percent recycled materials. This new device captures kinetic energy of vehicles going through the restaurant’s drive-thru. • Mandated a towel and tissue program made from recycled paper for all distribution centers in North America as part of our on-going commitment to increase the purchase of recycled paper across the system.
