she recounted some of the experiences that have led
her to create stories for young adults that involve
political espionage, murder and romance.
She talked of her experiences of working as a crime
reporter and being witness to grizzly real life crimes
in her native United States. She also shared stories
about her time working in intelligence for the British
Government. The girls were enthralled and are
avidly reading her two books, Night School and

The Jocks, The Thespians, The Brainiacs, The Skater Dudes, The Adults, The Cheer
Leaders and all the crew had a fantastic time at the wonderful Senior House Production
of High School Musical. The cast, stage hands and production assistants have all worked
very hard under the expert direction of Miss Emma Baldwin and Mr Graeme Wilson. The
hard work at the rehearsals really paid off, resulting in a fantastic performance. A
special mention should go to all the girls who played the lead roles, all of whom are still
only in Upper Four – a fantastic achievement! Well done, everyone!

The French Musical Soirée on 13 March was a great success.
Great Music, Great Company, Great Wine and Great Food!
Our Senior House and Junior House ensembles performed a varied and exciting
programme alongside performances by The Senior Band, The Wind Band, The Lower
Three Recorder Ensemble, The 5+ Ensemble and The Jazz Band. The Senior Choir and
the Chamber Choir performed and guests enjoyed a variety of instrumental and vocal
soloists, poetry recitals in French and a beautiful dance performance. Our High School
Musical Crew performed some of their songs from the show. It was a night to
remember!

Our World from My Window
Westfield School Junior House hosts young German visitors
In February, eight nine and ten year olds from Germany and their teachers became
part of the Westfield School community as part of their European Commission
project, entitled ‘Our World from my Window’. This project involves three schools,
Westfield, Armin-Maiwald-Schule from Monheim am Rhein in Germany, and
L’Ermitage International Ecole de France from Maisons-Laffitte, just south of Paris,
working together on the theme of the cross-curricular project in art, music, dance,
history, geography, ICT and language lessons.

with Ruby
Our visitors experienced the beautiful Northumbrian coastline, albeit in biting
winds, and visited Tynemouth with our Lower Three girls. They also joined in art
and IT lessons in school, as well as being taken to many other splendid local sights
over the weekend by their host families, including Bamburgh, Seahouses and the
Chinese New Year festivities in Newcastle.
Some of the children from Germany were paying a return visit following Westfield’s
visit to Monheim in November 2012, so a few tears were shed on parting. Some
may get the chance to meet again when Westfield and Armin-Maiwald-Schule visit
L’Ermitage School in France in June.

international students in the school, information was
supplied and visits were made by parents from Holland,

Transition girls joined other pupils to launch the
Primary Engineering Programme for NE Schools,
which is funded by NE engineering companies in
conjunction with the EEF Manufacturing
Organisation. The companies involved will provide
teacher training and resources to 28 schools in the
north to promote engineering and involve young
students with the excitement of scientific discovery
and invention. Our young engineers thoroughly
enjoyed the launch of the programme, encouraged
by juice and cupcakes, and are looking forward to
learning and creating throughout the coming months
