Author Visit Sometimes school can be murder! UJUK Young Enterprise Company attended the Commonwealth Day Observance Service in Westminster Abbey Four members of the UJUK Young Enterprise Company attended the Commonwealth Day Observance Service in Westminster Abbey on 11 March organised by The Royal Commonwealth Society in the presence of HRH The Duke of Edinburgh. As one of the winning companies for the National Competition 2012, they were invited to apply for tickets and were delighted to be successful. Mrs Gaynor, Head of Business Studies accompanied by Miss Emma Gillespie, the Young Enterprise Mentor and UJUK Young Enterprise team members Honor Hierons, Sarah Harrison, Grace Lloyd-Jones and Georgina Forster headed off to London to attend the ceremony. This was a wonderful experience for our Young Enterprise students. Young Enterprise Dip It Young Enterprise Trade Fair Dip It girls and their young models at The Trade Fair. Sarah Makepeace and Emily Ward wearing Sandwich Boards DIP IT attended the Metro Centre Young Enterprise Trade Fair in February and broke the school record for sales by selling over £100 of stock. Mrs Wilkes’ twins were on hand to sell the new tie dye babygros! To celebrate World Book Day on March 8, CJ Daugherty, author of the best-selling Night School series of teen novels, visited Westfield where she recounted some of the experiences that have led her to create stories for young adults that involve political espionage, murder and romance. She talked of her experiences of working as a crime reporter and being witness to grizzly real life crimes in her native United States. She also shared stories about her time working in intelligence for the British Government. The girls were enthralled and are avidly reading her two books, Night School and Legacy . Co-op Fairtrade Recipe Competition. As part of their Home Economics course this term girls from Lower Four, Upper Four, Lower Five and the Lower Sixth were asked to create a recipe using selected Fairtrade ingredients. Entries have been forwarded to the Co-op and the most creative are to be included in a Fairtrade cookery book to be launched in October. Winning pupils will be invited to the launch event and asked to cook their recipe alongside a Co-op chef. Let’s keep our fingers crossed. Some of the dishes created are shown here WFS News_03.13 22/3/13 10:20 Page 4 Lucy Blair and Lucy Hall Musical Moments High School Musical The Crew at rehearsals: Lucy Blair, Lucy Hall, Jessica Coventry, Lucy Hatton and Verity Hodgson-Bajoria The Jocks, The Thespians, The Brainiacs, The Skater Dudes, The Adults, The Cheer Leaders and all the crew had a fantastic time at the wonderful Senior House Production of High School Musical. The cast, stage hands and production assistants have all worked very hard under the expert direction of Miss Emma Baldwin and Mr Graeme Wilson. The hard work at the rehearsals really paid off, resulting in a fantastic performance. A special mention should go to all the girls who played the lead roles, all of whom are still only in Upper Four – a fantastic achievement! Well done, everyone! Vive la France! The French Musical Soirée on 13 March was a great success. Great Music, Great Company, Great Wine and Great Food! Our Senior House and Junior House ensembles performed a varied and exciting programme alongside performances by The Senior Band, The Wind Band, The Lower Three Recorder Ensemble, The 5+ Ensemble and The Jazz Band. The Senior Choir and the Chamber Choir performed and guests enjoyed a variety of instrumental and vocal soloists, poetry recitals in French and a beautiful dance performance. Our High School Musical Crew performed some of their songs from the show. School News Help for Heroes Valentine’s Day Disco We were able to visit the grave of Nina Winn’s relative, Lance Corporal ELW Broad, RAMC who died on 5 August 1918 and was buried at Brandhoek Cemetery in Belgium. Georgina Forster and Medina Shahid organised a Valentine’s Day disco for girls and boys in Years 7, 8 and 9. Newcastle School for Boys joined in and a great time was had by all. The sale of tickets raised £450 in aid of Help for Heroes. Battlefields We shall remember them… Girls from Lower Four to the Upper Sixth visited the World War One Battlefields of the Somme and Ypres during the February half term, accompanied by Mrs Harris, Mrs Boyce, Mrs Dodds and Westfield old girl, Stephanie Forster. The visit was a very informative and moving experience for all the girls. As well as visiting the Battlefields, the girls had the opportunity to practise their French and learn some words in Flemish. National Careers Week The Australian Imperial Forces Memorial at Polygon Wood. In the preserved trenches at Sanctuary Wood, Hill 62 with our very knowledgeable guide Mr Peter Crook. Senior House girls attended a variety of interesting talks during National Careers Week. We were delighted to welcome several old girls and parents who discussed careers in Engineering, Accountancy, Advertising & Marketing, Art & Design, Dentistry, Health Care, Nursing and Midwifery, Law, University Lecturing and how to set up a business. Three girls from Lower Three will be heading for different parts of the North and South American continents this summer as part of UK delegations to Children’s International Summer Villages (CISV). Lottie Coventry has been selected to go to Fredericton in Canada, Laura Dayson to New York and Jessica Baker to Mexico City. We look forward to hearing all about their adventures on their return. Junior House girls have been enjoying a short course in cartoon drawing and studying ‘Manga’, a Japanese form of drawing, well known to young people through comic strips and advertising. There's a dragon about! 6 WFS News_03.13 22/3/13 10:20 Page 7 r House Visiting Author Our World from My Window Westfield School Junior House hosts young German visitors In February, eight nine and ten year olds from Germany and their teachers became part of the Westfield School community as part of their European Commission project, entitled ‘Our World from my Window’. This project involves three schools, Westfield, Armin-Maiwald-Schule from Monheim am Rhein in Germany, and L’Ermitage International Ecole de France from Maisons-Laffitte, just south of Paris, working together on the theme of the cross-curricular project in art, music, dance, history, geography, ICT and language lessons. Jacqueline Harvey acts out the story with Ruby Our visitors experienced the beautiful Northumbrian coastline, albeit in biting winds, and visited Tynemouth with our Lower Three girls. They also joined in art and IT lessons in school, as well as being taken to many other splendid local sights over the weekend by their host families, including Bamburgh, Seahouses and the Chinese New Year festivities in Newcastle. Some of the children from Germany were paying a return visit following Westfield’s visit to Monheim in November 2012, so a few tears were shed on parting. Some may get the chance to meet again when Westfield and Armin-Maiwald-Schule visit L’Ermitage School in France in June. Each year group studied the language, food, products, culture and customs of a different country, producing displays, artwork, leaflets and posters. Making the most of the international students in the school, information was supplied and visits were made by parents from Holland, Germany, Sweden and Portuguese speakers from Brazil. All the girls and staff dressed as ‘Our Forest Friends’, including tigers, bears, badgers and rabbits and a few fairies and elves!. 8 Transition WFS News_03.13 22/3/13 10:21 Page 9 Primary Engineering Programme Young Engineers launch Primary Engineering Programme Transition girls joined other pupils to launch the Primary Engineering Programme for NE Schools, which is funded by NE engineering companies in conjunction with the EEF Manufacturing Organisation. The companies involved will provide teacher training and resources to 28 schools in the north to promote engineering and involve young students with the excitement of scientific discovery and invention. Our young engineers thoroughly enjoyed the launch of the programme, encouraged by juice and cupcakes, and are looking forward to learning and creating throughout the coming months South Indian Owl Soumya meets a Barn Owl Trewitley Owls Visit Image Musical Theatre visit Image Theatre’s production of ‘The Happy Prince’ told a moral tale in drama and song with much audience and pupil participation. 9 WFS News_03.13 22/3/13 10:21 Page 10 Round Square Conference 'Back to the Future' 'Back to the Future' was the theme of this year's Young Round Square Regional Conference held at Westfield School. European Delegates from Years 6 and 7 and staff members joined our delegates from Lower Three and Upper Three. We were delighted to welcome the participating Round Square schools of Gordonstoun, IS Zurich, Abbotsholme, Box Hill, Ermitage, Herlufsholm, Louisenlund, Birklehof and the Samworth Academy. Newcastle School for Boys also joined us at the conference. Delegates tried their hand at orienteering, pottery and bushcraft followed by a visit to Kielder Observatory. They enjoyed making music, tackling techology projects and exploring ideas in their barazza groups before enjoying the conference dinner and disco. Elena Campbell thoroughly enjoyed working in Cambodia in the community of Prokeab in the Trapeang Thum district, about 87km south of Phnom Penh, where Elena With children Bycicle Time she became involved in many projects within the local community. Emma Briggs and Ruth Henderson worked on community building projects in Katapathar Community in the Garwahl region in Northern India as well as having the opportunity to explore the local sights. This was a life-changing experience for all the girls. The Pie and Peas Quiz Night The Pie and Peas Quiz Night was great fun with a full house. The triumphant joint winners of the Trophy were the Mushy Minds and Cox & Corbin (the Physicists). The Camellia Ball ... (Bond style!) will be held on Saturday 29 June from 7.30pm till 1am. Tickets will be available next term. 'The Lawson Gang' New Chairman A huge thank you to Mrs Deborah Oldroyd for the delicious home made pies, to our fantastic Quiz Master, Mr Graeme Wilson and for everyone who helped to organise the event, run the bar and clear up afterwards. The event raised just under £500 which is a great achievement. The Senior House Staff Team Nominations are invited for the position of Chairman of The Westfield Association. Mrs Dawn Wilson, the current Chairman, would like to hand over the reins of this very interesting role to an enthusiastic, committed, expert delegator!
