800 Girls 2-18
TEACHER OF PRIMARY EDUCATION
Background to Junior School and Nursery
1.
St George’s School for Girls, Edinburgh, has 800 students aged 2-18 years. It was
founded in 1888, and its fundamental aim is to provide an excellent education for
girls. Our academic results are outstanding and approximately 97% of our students go
on to university. We are a girls’ school and we accept boys who have sisters here, but
only in the Nursery.
2.
The Junior School is on the main school site, in a purpose-built modern building with
its own play areas. Pupils also take advantage of the facilities of the whole school,
such as the Sports Centre, sports fields, and the Music Centre. The Junior School has
150 girls from Primary 1 to Primary 5. There are 2 classes in each year group, Primary
1 to Primary 5, and classes vary in size from 13-19. Class teachers are supported by
classroom assistants.
Primary 6 is also part of the girls’ primary education and is based in the Lower School
Campus. There are about 19 in each of the Primary 6 classes. Primary 7 is the first
year of secondary education, and is also part of our Lower School in a year group
called Remove.
3.
We promote and support the development of each of our pupils through a wellbalanced and well-resourced curriculum which incorporates some of the experiences
and outcomes of a Curriculum for Excellence. Pupils receive specialist teaching from
teachers in Art, Music, Physical Education and Modern Languages. We have a full
programme of extra-curricular activities in the Junior School (Primary) to which all
teaching staff are expected to contribute.
