Participants should already be familiar with the following features and functions of CCH Internet
Research NetWork (CCH IRN):
• Research Methods:
o Browsing through Menu Topics
o Searching by Key Word(s)
o Finding documents by using a Citation
• MY CCH tab customization:
o Selecting ‘Favorite Research Publications’
o Setting Search Method Preferences
o Using Research Folders to save links to documents

Training Guide
Introduction
CCH@Hand is a suite of desktop integration applications. It serves as a bridge,
extending access into your CCH Internet Research NetWork subscription, the
Web(with GoogleTM), industry web sites and files on your computer (with
GoogleTM Desktop installed).
CCH@Hand plugs into the following existing applications:
o Desktop (Microsoft Windows 2000 SP4, Windows XP SP1, or later)
o Microsoft Internet Explorer browser v 5.5 SP2 or v6.0 SP1
o Microsoft Office 2003 applications: Word, Excel, Outlook, and Powerpoint.
It is automatically available, at no extra charge (http://athand.cch.com) and is easy
to install with future updates to be delivered over the Web.
This 1 hour training session is designed to help familiarize participants with the
productivity features of CCH@Hand, used in conjunction with a subscription to
any of the CCH Internet Research NetWorks: Business & Finance, Health &
Human Resources, or Tax & Accounting.
Objectives
At the end of this training, you will be able to:

Modify your CCH@Hand Options
•
Use CCH@Hand to:
o Conduct a word search in CCH database(s), your Research Folders,
your computer, and/or industry web sites
o Locate information using a topical index
o Retrieve a document using a citation reference
o Access your Tracker News & Research Folders
•
Use CCH@Hand functionality within Microsoft applications:
o Internet Explorer
o Office 2003 applications

Desktop Tools for CCH@Hand
Once installed, the CCH@Hand icon can appear in 4 places on your Desktop:
1. Your Desktop screen
• Double-click to open CCH@Hand Desktop
• Right-click to view pop-up menu (Select ‘Check Latest
News’for pop-up of your Tracker News)
3. Task Tray
• Quick Launch icon - Click once
to open CCH@Hand Desktop
• Optional - Quick Search toolbar
(To enable, right-click in gray area
on menu bar, select Toolbars and
then CCH@Hand)
o Select search scope
o Type your search term(s)
o Click Enter to execute
2. System Tray
• Double-click to open

CCH@Hand Options
Manage your default settings for CCH@Hand using CCH@Hand Options. You
can access Options from several locations:
• Desktop:
o Start / Programs / CCH@Hand / CCH@Hand Options
o Desktop icon : right-click and select Options
o System Tray icon : right-click and select Options
• Browser’s CCH@Hand toolbar Options command
• Within CCH@Hand’s desktop console (lower left hand corner)
• Select a tab:
o Login: Enter your CCH IRN User ID and Password. Then select the
Practice Area(s) you wish to use with CCH@Hand (dynamic listing
according to your ID/password).
o General: Verify/modify the settings for MS Office prompts,
CCH@Hand icons and animation (activity indicator).
o Search: Choose your default Search Method: All Terms, Any Term,
Near, Exact Phrase or Boolean.
• Click OK to save changes and close CCH@Hand Options.
Notes: Any changes to CCH@Hand Options will automatically be reflected in your CCH IRN
preferences and vice versa. You may need to refresh your browser for changes to take effect if
you are currently logged in to CCH IRN.

CCH@Hand Desktop
The Desktop for CCH@Hand contains several tabs, and is the control center for
conducting word searches, using the topical index, retrieving documents using
citations, accessing Tracker News, managing Research Folders, viewing
information, and additional operations.
Access to CCH@Hand Desktop is available from several locations:
• Your Computer Desktop:
o Start / Programs / CCH@Hand / CCH@Hand Desktop
o Desktop icon : double-click
o System Tray icon : double-click

o Task Tray icon
• Microsoft Internet Explorer Browser’s CCH@Hand toolbar commands
CCH@Hand Welcome Screen
The initial view upon startup is the Welcome screen. Besides tabs for major
research functions, it also contains some helpful links at bottom.

Search tab
To conduct a search:
1. Type your search expression
2. Choose your search scope: CCH, Google, Google Desktop, and/or web sites
3. Click Go and view search results by category in folders at bottom
4. Results are grouped in folders under Search Results, bottom left pane. Click a
folder to view it’s 1st fifty results in a preview pane on the right

Citations tab
If you know the citation of a CCH document you want to view, you can go right to
that documents using the CCH@Hand Desktop.
Steps to search by citation from the CCH@Hand Desktop:
1. Select a citation template heading, from the list on left (per your CCH
subscription).
2. Enter the citation reference number at top
3. Click Go to execute. Document(s) will be displayed on the right.

Index tab
CCH@Hand provides a single, consolidated menu of topics, arranged
alphabetically, to use when looking for information within a variety of
publications. After searching for a topic, you browse a topical tree to locate
document(s) specific to a term.
Steps to use CCH@Hand Index:
1. Enter a search expression into the ‘Topical Index Search’ box and click Go
2. Click a topic of interest in the ‘Search Results’ list to open and view a tree
structure with the complete index on the right
3. If your selected topic opens to subtopics, you may continue to browse
through the index tree to find the most relevant subtopic and document(s)
4. Click any document to view it’s full-text in the preview pane on the right.
The CCH Legal Thesaurus can be
enabled to broaden the search for a topic.
Note: After initial installation and setup, it may take several hours before the Index
is ready to use and searchable. Until then, the search box will be grayed out.

Tracker News tab
Set up and view your customized, daily Tracker News in the CCH@Hand Desktop.
Click a Tracker News folder to open and
view items on right
Upon initial start-up of your workstation each day, you will receive pop-up alerts
for Today’s Highlights (Tax Research NetWork only) and Tracker News. You can
activate Tracker News alerts at any time by right-clicking the CCH@Hand
Desktop icons and selecting ‘Check Latest News’.
Today’s Highlights - available for CCH Tax Research NetWork only.
- Click thumbtack to keep the alert fixed on screen
- Click ‘x’ to close the alert
- Check ‘Don’t show me again’ box to prevent these
pop-ups from showing again today

Use Research Folders to store CCH documents for easy access later. Research
Folders created within CCH@Hand are readily available within CCH Internet
Research NetWork and vice versa.

CCH@Hand within Microsoft Office 2003 Applications
With CCH@Hand, you can create links to CCH documents, retrieve a CCH
document with a citation, view your CCH Research Folders and conduct CCH
research from within your Office 2003 applications (Word, Excel or Outlook).
Quick Search
Any text within MS Office 2003 applications can be used to conduct a quick
search within your CCH@Hand default search scope.
Steps to conduct a quick search:
1. Highlight the desired text (can not be within a link)
2. Right-click on highlighted text to view pop-up menu:
• Select ‘Search Highlighted Text within IRN’ (conduct a search
within your default CCH@Hand search scope)
Or
• Select ‘Look up’ (available within MS Office 2003 applications) and
use Research Task Pane to search within a selected reference. See
next page for more information about using Research Task pane.

Smart Tags
CCH@Hand is integrated with Microsoft Office 2003’s Smart Tags feature.
To enable automatic application of Smart Tags within
Microsoft Word: Select Tools from the menu bar/ click
Options / select the View tab / check the Smart tags box /
and click OK.
With Smart Tags enabled, MS Office applications will automatically recognize
CCH Citations within the text and “tag” the citation with an underline of little
purple, dots.
• Hover your cursor over the Smart Tag citation text,
a small information button will appear.
• Click on the information button
menu of Smart Tag actions:
