Sometimes numbers are large,
Sometimes they are very small.
To help us express them all,
We have Scientific Notation
Scientific Notation is based off the powers of 10, very similar to
the metric prefixes.
Example…567,000 in Sci-Not. is 5.67 x 105
5.67 x
constant
5
10
base
exponent
For numbers greater than or equal to 10
The power will be positive.
To determine the power’s value you count how many
decimal places you move the decimal to the left.
You move the decimal as many spaces as needed to leave
only one number to the left of the decimal point.
7
30000000.00 =
= 3.0
3.0· 10· 10
7654 3 2 1
7
For numbers lower than 1.0
The power will be negative.
To determine the power’s value you count how many
decimal places you move the decimal to the right.
You move the decimal as many spaces as needed to leave
only one number to the left of the decimal point.
-8 -8
0.0000000321 = 3.21
3.21· ·1010

Calculator Extension
Switching between Normal and Scientific Notation can
be done on your calculator.
Press your “MODE” button and notice the following
FLO = normal
SCI = scientific notation
