Edgewood relies on government contracts for more than 85% of our annual budget. As city, county, state, and federal budgets for social services continue to decline, the threats to our programs continue to grow. We rely on the generosity of donors such as you to make up the difference when government funds fall short or when we see an immediate need in our community not supported by the government.
Over twenty years ago, Edgewood saw the need to support caregivers who were raising a relative’s child. Funding streams existed for the foster care system, the only official avenue at the time for children taken out of their homes. Through our advocacy efforts in California and at the federal level, kinship care—when relatives take on the responsibility of caring for another relative’s child when parents are no longer able—was institutionalized and government funding was allocated to support services for these caregivers. The majority of states followed our lead and have since formalized kinship care.
Private donations are also critical to our school-based well-being services. In 2010, we celebrated the fifth anniversary of the Grace Magill Memorial Project which was established in honor of the daughter of a former board chair who committed suicide at the age of fifteen. The goal of the Project was to design a preventative and early intervention model to help educate and create acceptance within schools for wellness to be a central and vital component of day-to-day services for students and their families. Well-being assessment, awareness, and access have become the foundation for all of Edgewood’s school-based work. Edgewood has leveraged the private donations from the Grace
Magill Memorial Project to secure additional grants to expand the project which is recognized throughout California for its success.
We are grateful for the public/private partnerships that support our programs such as kinship and school-based well-being. Private foundations, corporate partners, and individual donors help to maintain the quality programs which have built Edgewood’s reputation and enduring legacy since 1851.
In 2011, Edgewood celebrates 160 years of transforming lives and restoring hope. This significant landmark allows us the opportunity to reflect on past accomplishments, as well as look toward positioning the agency for the next 160 years. Strong leadership is essential for continued progress. As the new Chairman of the Board as of July 2009 who is a long-time board member and Edgewood supporter, and as the new CEO as of November 2010 whose passion and life’s work is helping families support their children, we are prepared for this challenge.

Program highlights for the year ended June 30, 2010
Despite the tragic fire, not one day of service was lost for this voluntary, peer-driven program. Buses transported clients from the burned-down location to temporary space in our San Carlos office. The phoenix rose again with the help and support of our constituents. Less than a year later, we opened the doors to a bigger facility just up the street from the original location. The Drop-In Center provides recreational, vocational, and educational activities focused on expanding the life skills necessary for a successful transition to adulthood and independence.
The theme of the conference was Responding to Trauma in our Homes,
Schools, and Community with the keynote address given by Dr. Bruce Perry, a renowned neuroscientist whose research informs how trauma affects brain development. The success of the Forum positions the agency as a leader in the social services arena with the ability to draw upon its many resources to educate the industry on best practices.
The California Kinship Navigator program provides assistance to kinship caregivers across the entire state through a dedicated web site and a tollfree warm line. The program provides referral and information services to callers with the goal of connecting them to the resources they need. The program is designed to create more stability for kinship families, to fulfill their needs, and to help strengthen the caregivers’ capacity to care for themselves and for the children for whom they provide.
