The 1997 issue of America Reads Challenge stated that when "tutoring programs that incorporated research-based elements produced improvements in reading achievement (and) tutoring can also lead to improvements in self confidence about reading, motivation for reading, and behavior, both among tutees and among peer or cross-age tutors."(America Reads Challenge, 1997, pg. 2) This is exactly what we are looking for. We can support children and challenge children to positive outcomes effectively increasing the successes for everyone involved. Success begets success. We will give them small foundational successes upon which they will build a fortress of knowledge and power. It is the formula for success. We know, based on the research, that children learn best in small group environments. We will provide this for the children we serve. With groups no larger than four student per tutor, every child will have their needs met. Assessment will not be offered in the typical test format that so many of these children are struggling with. We will expand their world to include true evaluation of what they know and how they can use it, not just what they can write on paper. We will get there too but first we lay the groundwork, build trust and expect success. This is how YEAR will implement evidence-based research into all that we do. We will take a common sense approach and apply newly uncovered programming and brain research to teach children in a way they can actually learn form. We will use Robert Pianta?s research published in Harvard Education Letter in 2008 Neither Art Nor Accident to guide us in clear and standardized evaluation of both the child's progress and the tutors effectiveness. The team will come together to boost the child to the next level. A success for society in the end. Date: 10/8/2010 2 of 2
