“Marathon 101 Cheer for the Runners” Campaign
Cheering Team Competition and Awards Presentation
Winning Teams Cheer for
Standard Chartered Marathon Runners Next Week
[Hong Kong ---21st February 2010] ─ Title-sponsored by Standard Chartered Bank
(Hong Kong) Limited (“SCBHK”) and organised by the Hong Kong Amateur Athletic
Association, the “Standard Chartered Hong Kong Marathon” attracts tens of
thousands of runners every year as Hong Kong’s premier international sporting event.
Launched especially for primary and secondary school students in Hong Kong, the
“Marathon 101 Education Programme” has also become a yearly focus of attention for
the educational sector. The grand finale of the Education Programme, the “Marathon
101 Cheering Team Competition”, was held at Victoria Park today (21st February). 16
teams comprising 300 primary and secondary school students competed for the
opportunity to cheer for tens of thousands of runners at the “Standard Chartered Hong
Kong Marathon 2010”. Outstanding participants in the “Marathon 101 Little Reporters”
programme also received awards at the ceremony today.
Around 300 students from primary and secondary schools in Hong Kong formed a
total of 16 “Marathon 101 Cheering Teams”, competing for the Best Costume Award,
Creativity Award, and Champion, 1st runner-up, and 2nd runner-up Awards in the
primary and secondary school divisions. Teams performed self-created slogans,
choreographed dance and gymnastic routines at the Standard Chartered Hong Kong
Marathon Expo at Victoria Park, sparing no effort in their performances. Their cheers
and routines demonstrated both tremendous creativity and the perseverance of the
Marathon spirit.
Sitting on the judging panel of the Cheering Team Competition this year were Mr.
Sundeep Bhandari, Regional Head of Global Markets, North East Asia, Standard
Chartered Bank (Hong Kong) Limited; Mr. Edward Wong Wai-On, Coordinator of the
Standard Chartered Hong Kong Marathon Expo 2010; Principal Cheung Chi Hung,
Marathon 101 Education Programme honorary consultant; Mr. Lam Wai Choi,
Chairman, Hong Kong Extra-curricular Activities Masters’ Association; and Mr. To Siu
Leung, Chief Executive Supervisor, Association of Hong Kong Dance Organisation
and Examiner, Hong Kong Art Development Council.
According to Mr. Bhandari, “Over 70% of primary and secondary schools in Hong
Kong have participated in the ‘Marathon 101 Education Programme’, and we are
deeply encouraged by the schools’ overwhelming response. The ‘Marathon 101
Cheering Team Competition’ is one of the Programme’s large-scale extra-curricular
activities, which helps students learn about the importance of team spirit and
cooperation. Moreover, it gives students the opportunity to cheer with the entire
community for the Standard Chartered Hong Kong Marathon, our city’s premier
international sports event.’
At the close of the competition, awards were also presented to outstanding primary
and secondary school participants in the “Marathon 101 Little Reporters” programme.
Through this initiative, students learned about basic journalistic writing and
interviewing skills, working together to produce a newspaper featuring the marathon.
The free newspaper will be distributed to the public on 23rd February.
