Regional Office of Education #41

Madison County

Dr. Robert A. Daiber, Regional Superintendent of Schools

Andrew Reinking, Assistant Regional Superintendent of Schools

A Message from Regional Superintendent

Robert A. Daiber, Ed.D.

The Regional Office of Education is pleased to announce the upcoming fall teachers’ institute, Gearing Up for Student

Achievement. This institute will be held October 10. The venue is inclusive of multiple sites and has much to offer for core teachers, non-core subject teachers, and support specialists. I would like to thank the district superintendents, professional development steering committee, and ROE staff for their efforts to design this unique professional development experience.

A key challenge to educators this school year will center around preparing for the online PARCC assessment.

Schools that piloted online PARCC last year have much to share regarding the nature of the test and the best practices to successfully implement it. Likewise, the ROE commends the work of teachers and administrators in their efforts to implement the new Illinois Learning Standards.

Ongoing professional development is taking place through cooperative efforts of the Regional Office of Education and the Statewide System of Support (SSOS).

I encourage teachers to be self-conscious this year regarding the changes which have occurred with licensure renewal and professional development. All teachers should log in and check that their ELIS account is up-to-date, get in the habit of entering their professional development with in sixty days of the event, and keep a record of all professional development in case of an educator license audit. HB

490 which recently passed the legislature now requires all applicants seeking a Professional Educator License or

Educator License with Stipulations to have passed the Test of Academic Proficiency (TAP).

Great progress continues to take place with Madison

County school facilities. This past month four occupancy permits were issued. Two major renovations occurred at Triad

Middle School and

Roxana Jr. High

School. Also, an energy improvement was made at

Hartford Elementary with improved lighting and a new

HVAC system. On

September 14,

Edwardsville District

#7 hosted a ribbon cutting of the $5

Dr. Robert A. Daiber million Chuck Fruit Aquatic Center at Edwardsville High

School. This facility is the first Olympic size pool built for a school in this region of the state. A ground breaking ceremony is scheduled on September 22 for the new

Father McGivney Catholic High School. It is great to see continued progress in this region to make our schools better for student opportunities.

In closing, I encourage all educators to exercise their constitutional right to vote November 4. School funding is a major issue that affects all of us. Please make an informed decision this year. My best wishes on a successful school year.

Gearing Up for Student Achievement

The Madison County Professional Development Steering

Committee, in conjunction with the Madison County Health

Department and Chestnut Health Systems, has developed the plan for this year’s Madison County Teachers’ Institute.

The institute will be broken into three sections - Core, Non-

Core and School Service Personnel. This allows for focus on the most pertinent information for each group. In this issue we have included schedules and instructions for each section.

Implementing the New Illinois Learning Standards –

Core Educators

Districts, or neighboring districts working cooperatively, have planned the institute for their core teachers: K-5 elementary and 6-12 teachers of ELA, Math, Science, and

Social Studies. This includes both regular education and special education personnel. Sessions include breakouts on implementing new English/Language Arts Standards, new

Mathematics Standards, Next Generation Science Standards

(NGSS), and PARCC assessments.

Strategies for Implementing the New Illinois Learning

Standards – Non-Core Educators

A separate program for all non-core educators is planned for one location in Madison County at Collinsville Middle

School. Non-core teachers include the following: P.E., Health/

Safety/Drivers’ Education, Music, Graphic Arts, Performing

Arts/Theater, Foreign Language, Speech Therapy,

CTE – inclusive of Business, Industrial Arts, Vocational

Agriculture, and Family/Consumer Sciences. *Please note that any teacher with a split assignment involving both core subjects and non-core subjects will stay at the home district to participate in the core programming.

Sessions include a variety of breakouts/workshops provided by state, regional and local leaders in all of the above listed disciplines. Most of the sessions focus on strategies for implementing the New Illinois Learning

Standards. Details follow in this issue.

Helping Students Reach the New Illinois Learning

Standards – School Service Personnel

A separate program for school nurses, social workers, counselors, and psychologists is planned for one location in Madison County at Roxana Junior High School. State, regional, and local experts have been enlisted to provide sessions focused on a variety of topics relevant to all school service personnel. Details follow in this issue.

Evaluations will be distributed in the last sessions of the day. Please complete the evaluation and turn it in as you exit the institute. You will receive a copy of your Hours of

Earned Credit form at that time.

This issue will serve as your program for the day and should be brought with you to the institute.

This issue can also be accessed electronically at http://roe41.org/index.php/services/menuroenewsletter.

Keynote Speaker - Dwight Douglas (D.D.) Lewis

8:00 - 8:50 a.m. - Gymnasium

D.D. Lewis

Dwight Douglas Lewis, named after two great

World War II generals, Dwight Eisenhower and

Douglas MacArthur, became a Dallas Cowboy star from 1968 – 1981. D.D. Lewis #50 helped the

Cowboys win twelve NFC Division Contests, one

NFC Wild Card Contest, nine NFC Championship games, five Super Bowl appearances, and two

World Championships. D.D. was voted the Most

Popular Player by Cowboy fans and received the Bart Starr Meritorious Award in 1981. D.D.

Lewis started as weak side linebacker in 1973 for legendary Coach Tom Landry. D.D. held that position for nine years.

D.D.’s life is much more encompassing beyond his football fame. He was a Tennessee native and grew up the youngest of fourteen children. He credits much of his success in life to teachers who helped guide him and cared about him as a young man. Their support led him to attend and graduate from Mississippi State University.

Today D.D. Lewis is married to Diane Walters.

He has two daughters and a son. He makes his home in Plano, Texas where he attends Chase

Oaks Church.

School Service Personnel - Roxana Junior High School

A program designed for School Nurses, Social Workers, Counselors, and Psychologists is planned for one location in Madison County, namely Roxana

Junior-Senior High School. State, regional, and local experts have been enlisted to provide sessions focused on a variety of topics relevant to all school service personnel. Details follow in this program.

The School Service Personnel Institute will be held at Roxana Junior High School. The institute will begin at 8:00 a.m. with the keynote address in the auditorium and will end at 1:00 a.m. Breakfast items will be available to purchase in the Commons (cash only) from 7:00 a.m. until 8:00 a.m. Beverages and snacks will be available in the Commons throughout the institute.

Keynote Speaker - Tina Meier

8:00 - 8:50 a.m. - Auditorium

Our Keynote speaker, Tina Meier, is an internationally recognized speaker on bullying, cyberbullying, internet safety, conflict resolution, the roles of parents and educators, sexting, and suicide awareness and prevention. On October 16, 2006, Tina Meier’s life took a devastating turn when her 13 year old daughter, Megan Taylor Meier, took her own life. Approximately 5 weeks prior to her passing, a 16 year old boy by the name of Josh Evans, contacted Megan through her MySpace account and they began a friendship. Their friendship ended with horrible and hurtful messages sent to Megan on MySpace.

Six weeks after Megan’s suicide, Tina Meier was informed that Josh

Evans never existed. In fact, he was the fictitious creation of an adult neighbor that lived down the street.

At the time of this tragedy, the State of Missouri did not have laws in place to prosecute someone using electronic communications to cyberbully another person. Tina worked closely with Senator Scott

Rupp and Governor Matt Blunt’s Internet Task Force for the State of

Missouri to help pass Senate Bill 818, which went into law on August

28, 2008. This law amended the harassment and stalking laws to include electronic communication. addressing the issue of bullying and cyberbullying in today’s world to students, educators, administrators, parents, youth rallies, counselors, law enforcement, and other professionals. Since 2008, Tina has reached more than 200,000 students, educators, and parents through her presentations.

Tina has made national and international media appearances. She also accepted a Presidential invitation to attend the 2011 White House Anti-

Bullying Conference, presented at the U.S. Department of

Education’s Safe and Drug Free

Schools National Conference in Washington, DC, and served as a consultant during the production of the ABC Family movie, Cyberbully.

Tina Meier

Each year, Tina travels throughout the country as a keynote speaker
