Penn Hillel Where the Jewish Future Begins 2013-2014 www.pennhillel.org penn hillel: changing lives Jeremy Pincus (C’14) was not raised in a traditional Jewish Opening Doors to Jewish Life Shira Chadasha Shabbaton In 1959, Look magazine ran its famous article, “The Vanishing American Jew” that predicted the disappearance of the Jewish community by the end of the 20th Century. home, but through his love of music, he joined the Penn Hillel a cappella group The Shabbatones. What began as a musical and cultural experience turned into an opportunity to explore his Jewish roots. “Using the Shabbatones as a foothold in the vibrant Jewish community at Penn, I felt comfortable enough to branch out and participate in more traditional aspects of the undergraduate Jewish experience such as eating meals at Hillel, attending Shabbat services and having Shabbat meals with friends. The welcoming nature of the Jewish community at Hillel allowed me to find my own identity and write my own Jewish narrative.” Rabbi Mike Uram While there is still a great deal of doom and gloom among some public intellectuals who predict the imminent demise of American Judaism, spend some time at Penn Hillel and you will see a very different future for our people. Jeremy continued his journey this summer on a Taglit-Birthright Israel trip with Penn Hillel. Jeremy shared, “...my process may take a lifetime, but I know that the warmth of the Penn Hillel community gave me what I needed to begin my Jewish journey.” Naomi Hachen (SEAS ’14) knew that as an observant Jew, Penn Hillel creates Jewish life for over 90% of the Jewish students on campus each year. Climbing Masada on Taglit-Birthright Israel One of the secrets to this success is as old as the Jewish people itself. According to the rabbinic commentary in Bamidbar Rabbah, the Torah itself was given with seventy faces. This means that even at the moment of Revelation, there was a sense that a one-size fits all form of Judaism would not even work then. For the Torah to be a living document, multiple entry-points and a wide array of interpretive and creative possibilities were needed. Penn Hillel would be where she would go to pray and to eat kosher food. But what she quickly learned was Penn Hillel would become her home. Naomi was involved in a wide range of initiatives where she worked alongside students of diverse Jewish backgrounds. “From social life to religious community, from leadership training to Jewish growth, Penn Hillel has been an immeasurable part of my Penn experience, and I will leave with a feeling of profound gratitude and appreciation for how my experiences at Hillel have changed and strengthened me, preparing me to be a Jewish presence in the larger world.” The irony of this is that Look is no longer published and the Jewish community is still here. Hillel takes this tradition seriously and crafts a dizzying array of opportunities for students to explore and build their own Jewish future. This means so much more than Reform, Conservative and Orthodox. It also means exploring Israel through different learning and advocacy programs; it means traveling to places like Rwanda and the American South to explore the roots of ethnic violence and racial divisions; it means small group Torah study that answers today’s deepest and most pressing questions; and it means learning from world famous scholars who speak to packed rooms. As you read this annual report, you will see how Penn Hillel achieves its mission – to develop the relationships, experiences and communities that provoke students to engage in a process of Jewish Self-Authorship – by bringing Jewish experiences to students where they are personally, educationally and spiritually. Penn Hillel opens new doors to Jewish life for students wherever they live, work and play. We are very grateful for your generosity and support and hope to continue to count you as our partners as Penn Hillel strives to fulfill its mission. Rabbi Mike Uram Director, Penn Hillel Alliance and Understanding Students visit Southern Poverty Law Center in Montgomery, Alabama annual campaign When asked why her Penn Hillel experiences were so transformative, she shared, total $1,991,505 2% 58% “At Penn Hillel, it is not enough that students simply attend. We’ve been taught to gain through giving, and know that our community rests on our own shoulders. It is through leadership and initiative that we develop our Jewish community, our own Jewish identities and establish ourselves as leaders for the greater Jewish world.” parents, Alumni, Friends and family foundation foundation grants 1% hillel international 1% 25% board contributions jewish federation of greater philadelphia 13% rentals and fees New Student Orientation with President Amy Gutmann 2 penn hillel 2013-2014 www . p e n n h i l l e l . o r g www . p e n n h i l l e l . o r g penn hillel 2013-2014 3 national board of governors Penn Hillel By the numbers Penn Hillel offers students an incredible array of gateways into Jewish life. ity un h Comm ve Jewis ti a rv g n se Con ng Fli g in Spri partakin Through educational, cultural, religious or intellectual initiatives, Penn Hillel reached over 90% of Jewish students on campus this year. students engaged by penn hillel 2,328 student leaders Reform Jewish Community travels to NYC Penn Hillel Bestowed Top Campus A ctivist Aw ard at AIPAC Polic y Conferen ce Gateways Into Jewish Life 363 70 Board of Overseers Jackie Einstein Astrof (C’93) Chair 5 religious communities 8 Israel advocacy groups Agahozo-Shalom Youth Village in Rwanda Jewish Renaiss ance Project Fall Re treat Student led Passover Across Penn Seder Orthodox Community at Penn’s Annual Banque t brates J-Bagel cele athon during Sukk 4 FreshMeet Retreat seei ng the site Philly during s of New Studen t Orientatio n 9 cultural programs 20 social justice initiatives Arbel Cliffs overlooking Sea of Galilee Sukkot 28 educational opportunities students attending Passover Seders students attending Shabbat Services Each Week students involved with Israel Advocacy students in community service 1,230 500 600 450 penn hillel 2013-2014 www . p e n n h i l l e l . o r g www . p e n n h i l l e l . o r g Sam Adelsberg (C’10) and Daniella Rohr (C’10) Susanna Lachs Adler (C’74, ASC ’76) and Dean Adler (W’79, L’83) Adam and Ellen Beren Debbie Kupfer Cosgrove (C’91) and Rabbi Elliot Cosgrove Suzanne Doft (C’92) and Jacob Doft (W’91) Dr. Arnold Eisen (C’73) Jane and Ishaia Gol Cindy (W’76) and Ben Golub Adam Hanover (C’10) Nancy Beren and Larry Jefferson Ellen (NU ’79) and Robert Kapito (W’79) Sally Katz (C’82) Caryn (C’83) and Lowell (W’83) Kraff Anne Heyman z”l (C’82) and Seth Merrin Mindy and Ira Mitzner Julie (C’79) and Marc Platt (C’79) David and Deborah Roberts (W’84) Max Schapiro (C’08, W’08) Jodi Schwartz (W’81, L’84, WG ’84) Rabbi David Wolpe (C’81) Susanna Lachs Adler (C’74, ASC ’76) Kenneth Baer (C’94) Jeffrey Barrack Martin Black (W’ 85) Allan C. We believe that Penn Hillel provides a unique opportunity for college students to learn about their Jewish roots and thereby acquire the knowledge and insights that can become an integral part of their personal identifies, career choices and future lives. “ Susan and Martin Lautman (PAR’11,14) As students, we both benefitted from Hillel’s comfortable environment and found that it sustained our connection to Judaism. As alumni, we support Hillel because it provides many opportunities for students to initiate or maintain their own connections to our people. We continue to be impressed with the students we have met who are active in Hillel initiatives, including Israel advocacy, various religious communities and the Jewish Renaissance Project. The impact Penn Hillel has on students is life-changing. “ Suzanne (C’92) and Jacob (W’91) Doft We invest in Penn Hillel because it’s very important in these times to have talented and caring people promoting values which we hold so dear on Penn’s campus.
