Instructor Office Office Hours Email : Jungmin Seo (Department of Political Science and International Studies, Yonsei University) : YHH116 : TBA : jmseo@yonsei.ac.kr Understanding Chinese Politics Summer 2013 (This syllabus is subject to change) Course description: This course covers the politics of the People’s Republic of China, including background information on pre-1949 revolution process, the era of Mao (49-76) and the reform period since 1978. The lectures offer a historical and thematic survey of Chinese politics, with an emphasis on the patterns and dynamics of political development in twentieth century China. Special attention will be given to the post-Mao reforms, state-society relations, the prospects for democracy, the relationship between Beijing and the provinces, the interactions between ideology and policies, as well as the issues of Hong Kong and Taiwan. Requirements: All students are required to come to class, complete assigned readings, and actively participate in all classes and blackboard discussions. Attendance and participation will greatly influence instructor’s discretion regarding borderline grades. No late assignment or exam will be allowed unless permission is granted by the instructor prior to the due/exam date. Grading: Participation 2 quizzes Short Paper Mid-term Final 15 % 10 % 10 % 30 % 35 % *Plagiarism will not be tolerated in any circumstance.
