Final Poetry Portfolio:
Name:
To conclude the poetry unit, you will be compiling a poetry portfolio that showcases you
work with the poems we’ve studied as a class, one poem you select on your own, and one
original poem of your creation. You will include two short analysis papers, one about a
your choice poem, and one in response to your own writing. For both, you’ll focus on
how an author creates tone in poetry using specific tools like: imagery, figurative
language, and word choice. This is a place to showcase your creative abilities to write
and interpret poetry.
Your portfolio will contain the following pieces:
1) A cover that contains images that pertain to the poems you select, and has a title
that alludes to the themes you explore in these poems.
2) A clean copy of your choice poem.
3) A color-marked and annotated copy of your choice poem.
4) Your short analysis of your choice poem including a rough draft, peer-edit, and
final draft.
5) Your marked-up copy of: “Southbound on the Freeway” and “A Barred Owl” or
“Fog”
6) Your Sense Walk notes
7) A clean copy of your original poem
8) A color-marked and annotated copy of your original poem.
9) A peer-edit of your original poem.
10) An analysis of your own poem.
11) Your post-assessment self-checklist about poetry
These should all be typed. Talk to me if this will be a problem.
The Final Portfolio will be due: Tuesday 5/10 and will be worth 50 points (BIG
GRADE)
Find your own poetry. Color mark for figurative language, word choice, and imagery.
Identify the speaker, the setting, the tone, and different ideas about the message or
meaning.
For the essay that you select, you will write a short analysis (2 pages) where you create a
brief introduction (author, title, short context) that finishes with a thesis statement that
deals with the specific devices that the author uses to create tone in his or her poem.
In your body paragraphs, you will use your thesis to guide a discussion of tone by citing
specific words, phrases, and lines of the poem, and discussing the devices that the author
uses to achieve his or her goals.
