GRADUATE SEMINAR IN SPORT MANAGEMENT: Current Issues in Sport Management LESM 543 Fall 2002 Facilitator: Rod Caughron, Ph.D. Office: 166E Gabel Phone: 753-1331 Email: rcaughron@niu.edu, sportmanagement@hotmail.com Office Hours: TTH 12:15 - 1:15 Course objectives: Describe the nature, scope and process of management in a modern society Describe the administrative relationships and objectives Understand the administrator’s role in personnel issues Evaluate the effectiveness of administration and subordinate personnel issues through peer evaluations Describe the impact that society and current events have on the management of sport Apply knowledge acquired in course to the development of a personal management style in an ever changing world Grades are based on the following criteria: 10% In-class Assignments 70% Presentation (70% Professor/30% Peer) Presentations should be power point presentations, 50-60 minutes long. Student is expected to turn in the week prior to their presentation a copy of the powerpoint presentation, as well as a source list. 10% Presentation Evaluations 10% Position papers (five pages minimum) *All pre-assigned assignments and the final presentation must be typed and legible in 12pt. type. If you try to hand in something that is not typed, you will receive no credit for that assignment. All assignments must have the student’s name at the top to receive credit. Students may not: Possess beepers, cellular phones, portable stereos or computers in class Disrupt class in any way Eat or drink in class Bring children or guest to class Wear hats during examinations Show up to class more than 10 minutes late You will be given one warning if you violate any of the above, the resulting consequence of a second offense is that you will fail the class and not be allow to attend the class at anytime in the future. The instructor reserves the right to add other items to the list above and/or to change the schedule, grading system or general expectations of the student’s performance at any time during the semester. Adequate time will be allowed for the students to make the appropriate adjustments. You will earn the grade that you will receive. The instructor will not be biased in any way. If you need any assistance for this class or have any questions as the class progresses throughout the semester, please speak with the instructor as early as possible. If you have any physical, mental or emotional conditions which may affect your ability to perform well in the class, and which require adjustments by the instructor or within the classroom, please inform the instructor so those adjustments or arrangement can be made as early as possible. Typically, last-minute adjustments will not be allowed; therefore, it is incumbent upon you to speak with the instructor as early in the semester as possible. Students should know and understand that failure to complete an assignment as described in this syllabus could lead to a grade of 0 for that assignment, and/or failure of the entire class due to failure to complete requirements of the course. Class will discuss the state of baseball and debate what needs to be done to save or improve baseball’s position. Individual Meeting day for your presentations (bring all the information you have about your presentation and an outline of how you are going to present the information).
