If you are using an online grade 12 course as an admission course to university it would be very
prudent to have this course finished and submitted to your online school so an assessed
grade can be entered for the second report card.
NOTE: Access your student account (use the institute number issued to you and your birthdate)
“Login” is on the home page of the post-secondary institute to which you have applied.
Most institutes use “myKwantlen” or “myLangara” or “my SFU”. Some are called “Beartracks” or
“Minerva”.
You will need your Student No. or ID issued to you by the institute – you would have received this
number when you applied either by an e-mail or letter from the institute. Your password or PIN will be
your birthdate for most institutes. Once you are logged in change your password.

UVic self-reporting closes
PSI Choices online form must be completed – Did you complete this in Grad Trans?
NOTE: Self-report your marks via your post-secondary institute student account as soon as you have
them for UBC, SFU, UVIC, UNBC and any school that has a self-reporting system with a deadline after
March 1st. Your second report card is available on March 13/15. Post-sec schools usually make a
conditional offer based on these self-reported marks. In late April/early May most post-sec institutes will
check with the BC Ministry of Education to make sure your self-reporting is correct. Do not falsify your
marks. Even if you already have an offer they will always check your marks.
If a post-secondary institute asks for an official transcript, even though you have activated the PSI form,
send it to them.
You will need a transcript if:
1.
The Post-sec school doesn’t have a self-reporting system (or they request a transcript even
though they have a system such as the University of Calgary).
2.
You are applying for a scholarship
3.
A specific program that is requesting a transcript such as limited enrollment programs-Nursing,
Graphic Design in Marketing at Kwantlen or the Professional Photography program at Langara or
a BCIT program will request a transcript by a specific deadline – send it to them.
If you are in this situation and need a transcript please see Ms. Foster or your counsellor.

Language Proficiency Index Test – The LPI Test – www.lpi.ca
The Language Proficiency Index (English test) can be written at:
UBC Vancouver
Simon Fraser University
Kwantlen Polytechnic University (Richmond or Surrey Campus)
Douglas College in New Westminister.
THE TEST
The Language Proficiency Index Test provides BC post-secondary institutes information
regarding an individual student’s competency to take a 1st year university/college English
course.
There are four parts to the test:
1.
Part 1 consists of sentence structure and identifying errors.
2.
Part 2 consists of English usage and identifying errors.
3.
Part 3 consists of reading comprehension.
4.
Part 4 is writing a 300-400 word argumentative essay used to explain a topic. Here are 2
examples: “Soccer is a sport that will continue to flourish only outside of North America.” Agree
or disagree. Or “You have been given a credit of $5000 on your credit card to spend as you
wish - what would you spend the money on, and why?”
WHEN TO WRITE THE LPI?
Most students will write the LPI after receiving their 2nd term marks – write only if you have to,
after checking your English 12 mark on March 13.
Register for sittings at Kwantlen, UBC, SFU or Douglas.
If you are planning to attend Langara do their test, the LET (Langara English Test).
Kwantlen also has its own English Assessment Test, the EPT (English Placement Test).
Both the LET and EPT are about $75 less expensive than the LPI.
It is advisable not to write the LPI any later than mid-May since most scores should be available
by June 1st for post-secondary registration. Students can rewrite the LPI as many times as
needed. Different dates and locations are available at the LPI site.
REGISTERING
Register at http://www.lpitest.ca/
REGISTRATION CLOSES 6 DAYS BEFORE THE TEST.
Pick the date and the Post-secondary institute that works best for you to write the test.
RESULTS
Students can read their score using the www.lpi.ca site within 3 weeks. Your Test Admission
Ticket contains a Registration Number (REG#) and a Personal Identification Number (PIN).
Make a copy of your REG# and PIN and keep them in a safe place. You will need your REG#
and PIN if you wish to view your test scores online.
MATERIALS REQUIRED ON TEST DAY
Bring: Test Admission Ticket – the admission ticket and the receipt.
Passport-Type Photo; print your name and registration number on the back of this photo
Valid Photo Identification: passport, driver’s license, etc.
Bring your PEN and your S.I.N., pens, HB pencils, erasers
A LPI STUDY GUIDE IS AVAILABLE ONLINE ALSO.
WHAT DO MY SCORES NEED TO BE TO TAKE A 1ST YEAR LEVEL ENGLISH COURSE?
SFU
SFU requires a level 4 on the essay and 50% on all the sections to be considered for writing intensive
courses, not for admission to the university. If students don't meet the exemption or take the LPI, they
can take a qualifying (non-credit) English course (Foundations of Academic Literacy) in their first 30
credits.
Exemption from the LPI: 75% or higher in English 12 or English Lit 12 on the final blended grade or
an AP English grade of 3 (80%).
UBC Vancouver and UBC Okanagan
UBC Van and UBC Ok require a Level 5 or 30/40 on the essay in order to take a first year English course
(ENG 100) for credit.
Exemption UBC Vancouver: second term mark of 80% or final blended grade of 75% or higher in
English 12 or English Lit 12 or an AP English grade of 3.
If a student is taking a program in the Faculty of Arts (BA, BFA, or BMUS) they are not required to
register in 1st year English but if they choose to do a 1st year English they will need to qualify. Students
intending to take ARTS ONE or obtain a major/minor in English will, of course, need 1st year English so
they must qualify by marks or the LPI. Students in all other faculties must take 1st year English so they
need to qualify by marks or LPI.
Exemption UBC Okanagan: Final blended score of 70% in English 12 or English Lit 12 or an AP English
grade of 2. (http://students.ok.ubc.ca/enrolment-services/course-registration/first-year-english.html)
Kwantlen Polytechnic University
KPU requires a Level 5 with a 30/40 on the essay portion to be able to take a ‘transferable to university’
English course (ENG 1100). A student can enroll in a nontransferable English course with an LPI essay
score of 26 and an English 12 score of 67% or Communications 12 score of 86% and you can still start
on other 1st year university courses.
Exemption: students with a final blended mark of a 73% (B) or higher in English 12 or an AP English
with a minimum score of 3.
Langara College
Langara College requires the LPI for students planning to enroll into 1st year academic English (ENG
1127). The minimum score is 26 on the essay and 50% on the LPI sections. To enter 1st year academic
subjects such as Economics, Computer Science, Biology and Philosophy courses students will need 67%
or higher in English 12.
Exemption: a final blended grade of 80% or higher in English 12 or Literature 12.
Douglas College
Douglas College requires a 5 on the English Usage section and score of 10 in Reading Comprehension for
university transferable English, Communications or Creative Writing courses.
Exemption: students with a final blended mark of 73% (B) or higher in English 12 or Literature 12.
UVic, BCIT, and VCC do not require a LPI but students must meet their individual postsecondary requirements.
If you are planning to attend a post-secondary institute outside of British Columbia do not
write the LPI. The LPI is basically a BC test.
