Early Childcare Services
High/Scope – Tender Care and Early Learning (birth – 3 years)
Starting September 2008
High/Scope - Highscope is a well established approach to early childhood education which is underpinned
by developmental and learning theory and by long term research. The research shows that the approach
can challenge disadvantage and social exclusion and improve children’s lives.
The Highscope Tender Care and Early Learning Course is designed for those working with young
children whether in social services, education, private, community or voluntary settings who wish to use the
High/scope approach with children.
It consists of 10 full days training delivered over a 10 month period to enable participant to gradually
introduce the approach in their setting.

SACCI (School Age Childcare Collaborative Initiative)
Developing Quality in School Age Childcare in Ireland Conference.

National Children’s Nurseries Association
The National Children's Nurseries Association was established in 1988 to promote high standards of quality
childcare. The Main Aim of the National Children's Nurseries Association is emphasising the importance of
early childhood experiences by working consistently to increase the quality of day-care in Ireland, through
education, information and support of all involved in this sector.
Arts and crafts for under 5’s – Mayo Abbey
September 25th. 7pm-10pm. €50 NCNA (€60 non NCNA). Venue: Mayo Abbey.
This workshop will offer guidance to childcare workers on how to recognise activities that children prefer and
how they can encourage and develop childrens expressions of creativity. Participants will receive many
ideas for creative activities with this age group
Managing Challenging Behaviour – Mayo Abbey

This workshop will explore strategies which the childcare worker can use to encourage positive behaviour
and it will provide an opportunity for participants to share techniques of dealing with difficult behaviour.
NCNA also provide template forms for use in childcare settings 
Accident/Incident Record Books: Duplicate book with one soft page and one card page
designed to tear out and place in child’s file.

Medication Record Sheets: It is important that the administration of medicine is recorded
accurately and a record kept in the child’s files. These record cards are designed to
ensure this system is efficient and accurate.

Individual Child Records: This folder is designed to hold all information on an individual
child. It contains consent to outing forms, a medical and photograph section, and the
‘Birthday Milestones’; recording sheets from 1-5 years.

Staff Record Book: This book allows for all staff details to be recorded in one area. It has
place for photographs and also includes a section for exit interviews.

Child/Staff Attendance Register: This register is designed to be a time saving device for
busy nursery staff and at the same time fulfill the requirements under the Pre-School
Services Regulations. There is space for details of 35 children plus roster and attendance
records of 30 staff for 12 months.

Foundation Year – The foundation year is designed as an orientation year for the kindergarten and class
teacher training but it also stands as an autonomous one year introductory course in anthroposophical
studies and will be of interest to those looking for an introduction to the work of Rudolf Steiner combined with
a foundation course in the arts.
Pedagogical years One and Two – These two years focus on teacher development and child development
and will prepare students to work within a Waldorf Kindergarten or primary school. These years include;
simple crafts, storytelling, puppetry, seasonal festivals, practical work in the kindergarten, child observation,
health and parenting issues, with wit the angels and inner development.

Mayo Intercultural Action
Intercultural Singing and Music in Mayo Intercultural Action
Anyone who is interested in sharing and learning singing and music together with local Irish people and
people from other cultures should come along. It takes place at 11 am every Monday morning in the offices
of Mayo Intercultural Action (MIA) in the Social Services Centre, Castle St. Car Park, Castlebar.
On Thursdays at 7:30 pm, a second group will meet in the new parish centre, behind the church in Kiltimagh.

FORBAIRT NAÍONRAÍ TEO
Forbairt Naíonraí Teo (FNT) provides advice support and guidance for Irish medium childcare, outside
Gaeltacht areas. FNT was established in the early seventies to encourage quality standards in an increasing
number of Irish language pre-school services. The area development officer organises in-service training for
Naíonra staff during each term, initial training for new staff is also organised each year through Irish in Dublin
or/and the provinces. FNT co-operates with accredited training organisations to provide FETAC levels 5 and
6 (CDBO) and other accredited training as necessary.
FNT also operates a quality assurance programme (scéim ardchaighdeán) on an ongoing basis, in Irish
medium services.
