Lesson: 8-13 C.C.S.S. - 5.NF.2.2, 5.NF.2.3, 5.NF.2.4 Warm-Up: Look at this problem. Don’t solve it! Decide what you need to be able to do to solve it and write an I can statement. Central Park in New York City is ½ mile wide and 2 ½ miles long. Multiply ½ by 2 ½ to find the area. Target Statement: I can solve a word problem involving multiplication of fractions and mixed numbers. Instruction/Guided Practice: Warm-Up Problem: ½ X 2 ½ 1. Write the mixed number fraction as an improper fraction. a. 2 ½ = (2 X 2 + 1)/ 2 (same denominator always). 2 ½ = 5/2 2. Multiply as you would multiply fractions. a. 1/2 X 5/2 = (1 X 5)/(2 X 2) = 5/4 3. Simplify the product and make it a proper fraction. a. 5/4 = 1 ¼ miles. Guided Practice: 1. 4 ½ X 1 ⅓ = 6. a. (4 X 2 + 1)/2 X (1 X 3 +1)/3 = 9/2 X 4/3 = (9 X 4)/(2 X 3) = 36/6 = 6 2. 3 ½ X 1 ¼ = 4 ⅜ a. (3 X 2 + 1)/2 X (1 X 4 + 1)/4 = 7/2 X 5/4 = (7 X 5)/(2 X 4) = 35/8 = 4 ⅜ 3. 3 ⅛ X 1 ⅖ = 4 3/8 a. (3 X 8 + 1)/8 X (1 X 5 + 2)/5 = 25/8 X 7/5 = 175/40 = 4 15/40 = 4 ⅜ 4. 1 ⅕ X 6 ½ = 7 ⅘ a. (1 X 5 + 1)/5 X (6 X 2 + 1)/2 = 6/5 X 13/2 = 78/10 = 7 8/10 = 7 4/5 Independent Practice: OC 69: #1-3, #3-7 (on the back page) OC 73: #1-4, #2-8 (on the back page) Exit Ticket: Edmodo quiz
