The Longwood Region FBLA Spring Conference will take place on Tuesday, March 11, 2014, at Longwood
University. Below is a summary of the changes to competitive event, upcoming deadlines, and
information you need to know to have a successful regional Spring Conference. If you have any
questions, please feel free to contact me after you have reviewed the FBLA State Handbook and the
memo from Sandy Mills, State FBLA Specialist. Thank you for all you do for FBLA.
CHANGES TO COMPETITIVE EVENTS FOR 2013-14
New Events:
o Insurance and Risk Management – individual event, objective test
o E-Business – individual or team event, pre-judged
o Mobile Application Development – individual or team event, prejudged, presentation
o Public Service Announcement – individual or team event, presentation
o Virtual Business – is now an event, but there is no regional or state component
o LifeSmarts – is now a new event, but there is no regional or state component
Modified Events:
o Combined Introduction to Technology Concepts and Technology Concepts into a new
event: Introduction to Information Technology. It is still an individual event for 9th &
10th graders.
o Business Ethics has been changed. Students are given an ethical topic to research and
they write a synopsis that is submitted prior to the regional conference. They then
make a presentation at the regional conference.
o Combined Word Processing I and II into one event called Word Processing for all grade
levels.
o Desktop Publishing is now an event for an individual or a team of two. The production
topic is pre-determined and developed prior to the regional conference. After judging
at the regional level, first and second place winners are forwarded to the state and
those competitors take a 60-minute objective test at the State Leadership Conference.
o The number of pages for American Enterprise Project, Community Service Project, and
Partnership with Business Project is reduced to fifteen (15).
JANUARY 23 – FEBRUARY 5: REGISTRATION FOR ON-LINE OBJECTIVE TESTING

listed on page 3 of this memo) on the following website: http://exam-site.appspot.com (username
“adviser” and password “fbla2014” - see email from Sandy Mills for more information.) You will
designate a proctor to administer the tests (teachers cannot serve as proctors). The online
registration form must be completed no later than Wednesday, February 5, 2014, at 5:00 p.m. EST.
JANUARY 23 - FEBRUARY 5: REGISTRATION FOR SPRING CONFERENCE AS WELL AS FOR COMPUTER
SKILLS EVENTS, PRECONFERENCE EVENTS, AND PERFORMANCE EVENTS

computer skills and other preconference events as well as the performance events that take place
on the day of the conference at www.longwood.edu/FBLA (see login instructions below). Please

Remember you may enter only one student (or team) in each event and all participants must be

be school administrators, guidance counselors, technology specialists, retired teachers, or media
specialists. Under no circumstances may a teacher of any subject area serve as a proctor for these
tests. Please email Melinda Fowlkes at fowlkesmi@longwood.edu the name, title, address, email

Conference on Tuesday, March 11. Schools with eligible contestants will be notified prior to the
conference.
LEADERSHIP/ETHICS CONTEST: Sponsored by the Longwood Logistics Center, schools will test their
teamwork and knowledge of leadership and ethics during the Spring Conference. Schools must preregister their team for this competition. Observers are welcome. See registration information
above.
WORKSHOPS: Two workshops will be offered for students who are not competing in another event
on March 11.
ELECTION OF REGIONAL OFFICERS: One of the highlights of the spring conference is electing
regional officers. The officers to be chosen are PRESIDENT, VICE PRESIDENT, SECRETARY, and
REPORTER. A local chapter may have NO MORE THAN ONE CANDIDATE for a regional office.
Remember, if you run someone for state office, you MAY NOT also run a candidate for regional
president. The regional officer application form can be found online at
http://www.longwood.edu/business/44840.htm and is due by Wednesday, February 26. We need
excited, capable, and hard-working FBLAers to run enthusiastic campaigns. (See the FBLA State
Handbook for the Duties of the Regional Officers.)
CAMPAIGN SPEECHES: Candidates will give their campaign speeches at the Opening General
Assembly at 3:00 p.m. Candidates running for the office of President will be allowed four minutes
for campaign presentations. The other candidates will have three minutes for campaign
presentations. The time allowed includes the entire campaign presentation--campaign manager
and candidate speeches, skits, etc. Campaign materials may be displayed at registration, but must
be removed when registration is over.
VOTING: Each school is allowed one vote for every ten members plus one for the President. The
school must register all voting delegates the day of the conference; for example, if your school is
allowed 6 votes and you only registered 5 students, then the school can only cast 5 votes. The
candidate receiving a simple majority wins. The newly elected officers will be installed at the
evening session.
DRESS CODE: All FBLA students are required to wear appropriate business attire for the conference.
Check your FBLA State Handbook for a copy of the dress code. Students who do not meet the
dress code are not allowed to walk across the stage to receive awards. Please have an alternative
student collect the award if necessary.
NAME TAGS: To expedite the registration process, schools should provide a name tag for each
student participant prior to arriving on campus. All students will be required to wear a name tag.
5
The name tag should include student name, name of high school, and name of event. If the student
is not competing at Longwood you may indicate workshop participant. For example:
Jane Doe
County High School
Workshop Participant
PARKING INFORMATION
Please indicate on your registration whether your group will be traveling by bus or car. Parking
instruction will be sent prior to the conference.
APRIL 4 – 5 STATE LEADERSHIP CONFERENCE
The Virginia FBLA State Leadership Conference will be held April 4-5 in Reston, VA. If you have a
student who qualifies to compete at the state level and finds that he or she will not be able to
compete, please email Melinda Fowlkes at fowlkesmi@longwood.edu as soon as possible. She
will then notify the next place winner that he or she has the opportunity to compete.
