In order to meet the challenges and to acquire a competitive edge, the higher education system in India has to transform to make it more socially relevant, technological oriented
, diversified and of high quality. The skills and specialisation of graduates produced by our system should match the real needs of the productive sectors in the market place and the changing needs of our society. But the main issues concerning higher education in
India is financial stress. The Economic restructural adjustment programme has given an opening to private sector to participate in higher education in India. No doubt, private sector has already been playing a significant role at the primary and secondary school education. The entry of private sector in higher education is recent in terms of its large scale participation at the higher level.
Though it seems that private sector may not be in a position to go alone at the higher education level in India where public sector has already been playing a dominant role.
Further, nowhere at the international level one can find a system where the national education system is evolved without the state playing the lead role. In this context, Public-
Private Partnership (PPP) has been ushered in as a new approach for private initiatives particularly at the higher education level.
