Other comments: 1|Page 1. Goal is to begin project this quarter 2. Idea is to just replace landfill bags with compostable bags and have a smaller side bin for landfill trash 3. Should we try in the suite style dorms? Claire: there are no paper towel dispensers in San Cat 4. Jeremy: do we know anything about the new housing they're building by family housing? 5. Pilot project in Ellison a couple years ago worked well. Waste audits showed a low contamination rate. b. Dining Commons sugar shakers i. Observations and updates 1. Ortega uses shakers already c. Claire 2. Julia 3. Shirley (maybe) d. Other Project ideas? i. Rosa: Issue: People throw their bulk waste into the streets of IV (example: old couches) 1. We should find a way for people to donate their items any time of year 2. Bring "green" culture from SB to IV 3. UCSD has a thrift shop on their campus that is so successful they raise enough money to give scholarships to international stuents. Problem is publicity 4. Juan: SIRRC has a project to create a thrift shop, we should collaborate with them! Talk to Cairo Briceno 5. UC Davis has a thrift shop geared towards art students looking for scrap material 6. Goal of ours could be reaching out to the public and increasing awareness about sustainability and using money to support local programs 7. Give Sale: end of the year, they ask for bulk item donations during move-out 8. concerns: parking access and storage 9. We could have workshops! example: upcycling 10. Shirley: If this is in IV, would ucsb students still be able to control it? Sarah: yes, Pardall center allows students to run things in IV Arriana: so many factors that go into this! first off, would interns be working there? 2|Page Rosa: the one at UCSD is run by volunteers Arriana: can we use a TGIF grant? Claire: If we offer to service to pick up their things, people would be more likely to donate Sarah: this is a huge project. AS is always looking for more space in IV for more projects. talk to Nick Fray (AS office president). Build a coalition of people. A project like this would take a few years to get going. Maybe start with monthly donations and garage sales at the Pardall Center. We need a written proposal and more defined vision. Group Project/Member Report(s) a. Shirley – Wednesdays campus org fair update b. EAB Hallo-Clean Sunday November 2, 11AM-2PM – who can attend? i. Tracy, Daniel, Julia, Gilberto, Sydney, Lauren, Stephanie c. Jeremy Peschard-Measure P i. Fracking: Hydraulic fracturing is a process that extracts oil from shale rock using hundreds of gallons of water and chemicals. ii. Problem: No real safe way to do it, pipes often burst, releasing chemicalled water into environment iii. Local ballot measure to ban fracking, it's important that it passes! Measure P would place a ban on fracking in Santa Barbara county iv. What do you say when people say it's going to take a away jobs and county revenue? Jeremy: The oppositions "facts" are based on the assumption that measure P will ban ALL oil drilling in county. This is false, the measure only prevents FUTURE projects from fracking. There will be no change to current drilling projects that are already taking place. Therefore, no jobs loss. but only prevents FUTURE projects, therefore no jobs loss D.
