ROBERT MORRIS UNIVERSITY School of Nursing & Allied Health December 11, 2006 CALL TO ORDER: The faculty meeting was called to order at 1:30 pm in the Ed Tech Conference Rm, Franklin Center by L. George Janine Szpak APPROVAL OF MINUTES: Minutes of the November 13th meeting were approved as circulated. ANNOUNCEMENTS: Srinivas Barla has been hired as the Tech GA for spring for 20 hr/week. Clinical and Lab Faculty Evaluations sent to all students via Web Surveyor. Thank you to Chris Davis for the demonstration of the ETC Welcome to Janene Szpak, DNP Recruiter/Advisor Topic/Discussion Updates Signage for lobby in John Jay. Apricot suggested because it is the graduation regalia color for nursing Action/Decision Faculty did not want apricot. L. George suggested navy blue or the official blue of RMU. Pinning Parents expressed appreciation for the personal ceremony. Faculty need to strongly promote this event to the graduating students. DNP Program SBN staff are reviewing proposals to determine review schedule by the full board. Ideally, the SBN will review at their January 4-5 meeting. Schedule of faculty meetings for next term January 11, 2007 2:00 – 5:00 February 8, 2007 2:00 – 5:00 March – TBD – Spring Break April 12, 2007 2:00-5:00 Curriculum Report L. Locaste reported that the committee discussed the importance of students passing the NURS 3015 math exam before beginning hospital clinical in NURS 3020. This would 1 Topic/Discussion give NURS 3015 at least 4 weeks to implement both the PO & IV math exams. This would require students who are not enrolled in (NURS 3015), but enrolled in (NURS 3020) to take the math exams in NURS 3015. L. Davidson suggested using post clinical conference to incorporate calculation questions. Recommendation that math calculations be added to all specialty classes, which may or may not include exam questions, at the discretion of the faculty. Evaluation Committee K. Zalice reported that the committee reviewed the senior end of program results for the December graduates. 8 out of 11 completed survey. Students were concerned about the accounting course. Action/Decision Faculty voted to unanimously to approve. Accounting course concerns will be discussed by the curriculum committee who will make a recommendation to the faculty. Committee is still collecting employer responses, but the response rate to date is poor. L. George developed an employer survey for graduate students. Policy V. Howard spoke to Sid Zohn regarding two outstanding issues. One change was recommended to the Student Impaired Clinical Performance policy. Will be posted on website. HESI C. Ross reported that graduating seniors are taking 4 Hesi tests. Students who do not achieve a 900 will be required to take remediation course. A database has been completed and will be distributed. Faculty will be responsible for tracking remediation during the semester prior to giving their HESI exam. Faculty should confirm with Jordan prior to the day of testing that the HESI is downloaded and all is prepared. Faculty approved the following in the second paragraph of the document: “Any evidence of impaired practice in a licensed RN who is functioning in the role of an RMU student nurse must be reported to the State Board of Nursing in which the student is licensed. P. Dempsey will make a HESI mailbox. Two weeks before mid term and 2 weeks before end of term P. Dempsey will remind faculty of who needs to remediate. 2 Topic/Discussion Simulation Junior students took part in simulation this semester. Very successful. Deans’ Student Advisory Board Sophomore students love informatics course and are anxious to get uniforms for the lab course. Junior level students want to purchase more uniforms. May have to look for a new vendor, quality seems to be an issue. L. Davidson suggested ordering scrub tops as giveaways. Senior students (not 2nd degree) love their psych experience especially the weekly feedback. Pursuit of terminal degrees eCollege vs Blackboard Update L. George is the representative for the SON on the information technology task force that is investigating vendors for CML systems. She asked for faculty feedback regarding eCollege and Blackboard as well as general concerns or questions about CML and online education Action/Decision Faculty were encouraged to incorporate simulation into their courses. Val offered assistance with designing the simulations and programming. L. Davidson will contact the scrub vendor to discuss quality issues. L. Davidson discussed support of faculty who want to attend a local DNP program at the U of Pittsburgh or RMU. Please send any comments to L. George Preceptor/Mentor Certificates These need to get out. Food will be ordered from Panera bread. Vision Statement V. Howard passed out a first draft of a vision statement. Please review to be sure vision and mission statement flow.
