5.
Select 7 sheets of colored or white paper for your project.
Lay each sheet on top of each other 1 inch apart.
Fold all papers together at the top and staple.
Cut off excess from the back (if you desire).
See example if necessary.
The following categories are to be researched and labeled for your work:
1. Top page: Title & group members’ names
2. Page 2: Label: Origin - this page needs to explain the background information
of leapfrogging and when it was implemented.
Page 3: Label: Biographies – this page relates information about the two main
commanders of the leapfrog campaign: Douglas MacArthur & Chester Nimitz.
Include early life and military career, including what part they played in WWII.
3. Page 4: Label: Timeline – create timeline for leapfrogging tactics. Be sure to
include date, battle, and island.
Battles to be included:
Iwo Jima
Leyte Gulf
Okinawa
Saipan
Tarawa
****Bonus points given for including more battles
4. Page 5: Label: Pacific Map - map of central Pacific - draw in route that Allies
followed in leapfrogging to Tokyo.
5. Page 6: Label: Major Battles – give a summary of all of the battles listed on
your timeline.
Include the following:
1. Date and name of island where battle fought and results
2. Casuality report for both sides
3. Significance of battle
4. Any other details you want noted
6. Page 7: Label: Major Battles - same as page 6. Use if needed. If not needed
for continuance of major battles, then Label: Pictures - and cover page with
pictures related to topic.
You may either type or print your information. Pictures may also be added on all
pages to enhance your work.
You must have at least 2 sources for information. Internet counts as 1 source even
though you search different websites. All resources used are to be documented on
the back of pamphlet.
Only the map and pictures may be cut and pasted from the Internet or other
sources. All other information is to be created by you. You are to research your
material and write your own contents and create your own timeline.
Guided questions to be answered in your project from the information that you
research:
1. What was leapfrogging?
2. Why were the battles in the Marianas a major turning point in the war?
3. What was the significance of Battle of Leyte?
4. Why did American forces want to secure the island of Iwo Jima?
5. What was the significance of Okinawa?
6. What were the amphtracs and why were they used in this operation?
You have 2 class periods to gather information and complete pamphlet. You may work
outside of class if needed. On the third day, each group will present a 3-5 minute oral
summary of their project explaining:
1. Their most interesting fact discovered about leapfrogging.
2. The battle that most impressed the group and why.
3. What the group learned from their project.
After oral presentations have been made and your project has been graded, you will be
given an evaluation questionnaire to be completed and turned in.
