Grandy’s River Collegiate
Viking Review
December 2006
Its that time of year when we pause to reflect
and to be thankful for all the good things in our
lives. During this Christmas Season we at
Grandy’s River Collegiate acknowledge the
support of the parent community and student
body. Without your commitment to education
and to improving our places in this world, our
BREAKFAST PROGRAM
Again this year, the breakfast program is helping
ensure that students get a good start to their day
with both good nutrition and some socialization.
Thanks to everyone who is supporting this
worthwhile program through donations or
volunteering. We have up to 70 students who
work would be that much more complicated.
participate each day.
On behalf of the entire staff I would like to wish
each and every one of you a joyous Christmas
holiday and a prosperous New Year. We look
forward to continued success in 2007!
CHRISTMAS CONCERT
Our annual Christmas Concert for the K-6
students was held on December 14 at 6:30 PM.
Our students put a lot of time and effort into
practising and we were thrilled with their
performances. Endless thanks to Mrs. Murphy
and the K-6 teachers for their patience and
commitment to doing a great job. We also
acknowledge with many thanks Mr. Goldsworthy
and his Comm Tech students who assisted with
the props for the musical (The Best Gift Ever).
We had a wonderful turn-out for the
performance. Thank you all for coming!
BOOK FAIR
On November 23-24 the school hosted a book
fair. It was one of the more successful fairs that
we’ve had. Thanks to those who supported our
efforts to increase literacy in our school. We
trade our profits for products (books and other
instructional materials) that will help each class.
Thanks to Julia and Robin who organized the
event.
UNEXPECTED SCHOOL CLOSURES
We have an emergency call system in place for
times when the school has to close. However,
there may be times when we have to close the
school suddenly. We have asked each family to
provide us with any special arrangements
necessary for this type of situation. Should your
arrangements have to change, please alert the
school secretary who will record the change in
our database.
SCHOOL COUNCIL
Our next meeting is January 23 at 3:30 PM.
PTA
The PTA would like to thank all members of our
communities for the fabulous support of their
projects to date. Representatives from both
communities and all grade levels are working
together to provide special initiatives and items
for the students. Christmas Craft day is always
a lot of fun and the high school students enjoy
their treats as well. The PTA also sponsors the
annual Christmas Breakfast with Santa.
ATTENDANCE
Attendance is monitored very closely since there
is a high correlation between attendance and
student achievement. If we suspect that your
child is absent for invalid reasons, you will be
contacted by the administration to discuss the
matter. If your child will be absent for any
reason, we ask that you inform the school by
telephoning the secretary. If your child leaves
throughout the day s/he must be signed out by
an adult.
ALLERGIES
We have students and staff with severe
allergies and sensitivities to fish, peanuts, latex,
popcorn and scents. We ask that you consider
this when preparing lunches and snacks and we
ask all students/staff/visitors to refrain from
wearing heavy perfumes/deodorants/body
sprays.
CHRISTMAS FLOAT
The school participated in the annual Christmas
parade on December 9. The student council,
Comm Tech class, CIS and PTA all worked
together to create A Winter Wonderland Float
which won us 2nd place. Thanks to everyone
who worked on the float preparation and who
participated in the parade.
CHRISTMAS GIVING
Thanks to everyone who contributed to the Food
Bank collection sponsored by the Grades 7-8
Social Studies class. Many less fortunate
people will benefit greatly from your act of
kindness. The students reported feeling very
good about making a little difference.
SCHOOL SPORTS
Thanks to Mr. Adey and Ms. Croucher for
coaching the boys and girls volleyball teams.
Both teams travelled to their respective
provincial tournaments this month. While
medals weren’t won, you won our hearts by
giving your best efforts and representing our
school proudly. GO VIKINGS!
Ms. Murphy and Jordan Herritt are currently
coaching the Boys’ Basket Ball team. They are
planning to host a tournament in the spring.
CIS
Julia and Robin have been very busy with
breakfast, promoting addictions awareness,
organizing the book fair, writing Santa letters
with students, Christmas Float, Christmas
Family dance and are planning many more
activities for the new year. They really
appreciate the support of everyone but would
like to acknowledge the following people at this
time:
Kayla, Samantha, Laura and Angela for
assisting with the Christmas Family Dance
Kerry Walters who brings recyclables to the
school from Rose Blanche
Todd Leamon who donated a large amount of
recyclables in November
