(the satiric object is what the satirist/author is criticizing) In Harrison Bergeron, the satiric object is the trend within our society to value equality without consideration of difference. It is the exaltation of sameness over individuality. 2. What is the satiric norm? (the satiric norm is the author’s true message; it is the value by which the satiric object is criticized) In Harrison Bergeron, the satiric norm is individuality is important. Vonnegut communicates that it is important to value the qualities that make us unique, and appreciate the talents and gifts that each of us have. 3. What satiric tools are used? Absurdity – the idea of equality taken to its logical extreme Exaggeration-Harrison’s strength, beauty, intelligence, his handicaps, his dancing ability, they “kissed the ceiling” etc. Understatement- “something real sad on television”: Hazel’s son just died. Wit or word play-“like deer on the moon” 4. What is ironic? What type of irony is it? Dramatic irony – “everybody was finally equal”, we know that they are not. - George’s comments about how good society is without competition. We know this is false. - George makes comments about following the rules while his son is going to rebel against the system.
