While the order of Mahadashas in Vishmottari Dasha is fixed, the point in order where the sequence commence in a particular horoscope usually depends on the Nakshatra position of the Moon at the moment of birth. The planet which rules this Nakshatra is the first ruler of native’s life and will continue to rule for that period allocated to it by the Vishmottari Dasha system, a portion which is proportioned to the distance the Moon has left to traverse within that Nakshatra. 72. What is a Bhukti or Minor Planetary period? Bhukti comes from root word “bhuj”, meaning “to enjoy, participate in, consume”. Mahadasha is divided into nine minor periods, which are each allotted to one graha, in the same order that characterizes the dasha. To determine the length of Bhukti use so-called Rule of Three: multiply the number of years allotted in the Vishmottari Dasha to the major period lord by the number of years allotted to the minor lord, then divide by ten and detach the reminder. The answer indicates the number of months in the minor period, and when the reminder is multiplied by three that answer indicates the number of days which must be added to the number of months to give the minor periods total length. Interpretation based on the Mahadashas help to evaluate general patterns of experience likely to unfold, while Bhukti permit dynamic interpretations which are usually more immediately meaningful. 73. What is a transit? A transit, or Gochara, is the ongoing movement of a planet considered to the birth horoscope. The transit of the strongest planet or the lord of Astrology of the Seers, Vedic Astrology Correspondence Course 15 the Ascendant in the birth chart are always important. Special notice should be given to the transits of the planets ruling the major and minor periods, the dasha and bukti lords. Transits have about 1/3 value in judging the effects of the periods. The rest is determined by the relationships between these planets in the birth chart. 74. Why are transits of Saturn to the natal Moon (Sade Sati) usually difficult? Commonly Sade Sati causes Chatra Bhanga, the loss of those who protects us. Sade Sati does not act in isolation, confluence must exist to activate it, and appropriate dashas, Bhukti and Gocharas must support it. While in those charts in which Saturn promises good results and bad results of Sade Sati re sometimes greatly modified, the effects of Sade Sati depends substantially on Moon’s rashi, and on its condition. A debiliated Moon, or Moon posited in Saturn’s debilitation constellation, or in constellations owned by Saturn’s enemies, tends to intensify the consequences. Since Sade Sati is sometimes also taken to apply to the Udaya Lagna, difficulties are likely to be compounded when the Moon occupies the twelfth, first or second houses in horoscope, for then the both types of Sade Sati will overlap. 75. Why are transits of major and minor period lords most important? The dasha lord is considered to be casting an aspect on all the planets and houses but double so upon those it already aspects in birth chart. Generally the Bhukti lord will be considered to be casting an aspect on the Mahadasha lord, modifying the nature of its results. Chapter 20 of “Paladipika” states: “When a planet whose Dasha is in progress happens to pass (in transit) his own house, exaltation or a friendly house, he will promote the prosperity of the house it represents when counted from the Ascendant, provided that the planet us endowed with full strength at the birth time as well”. 76. At what time of the day does the Vedic day begin? Vedic day begins with sunrise. 77. What is Shadbala? Shadbala is a system of computation, which aids in determination of planetary strengths. A planet strong in Shadbala will have power in the chart. Shadbala tells if a planet is likely to have enough strength to fulfill its role in the chart. Astrology of the Seers, Vedic Astrology Correspondence Course 16 78. What are the main factors of positional strength (sthana bala)? 1) Uccha Bala (exaltation strength): how close a planet is from its position of exaltation. 2) Saptavargaja Bala (divisional strength): its residential strength in the seven divisional charts. 3) Ojayugramasyamsa Bala (odd-even sign strength). 4) Kendra Bala (angular strength): its strength in terms of house position. 5) Drekkana Bala (decanate strength): its strength in terms of decanate location. 79. What is directional strength (dig bala)? This is one of the main factors of planetary strength, which helps to understand the power of planets in the houses. The point of directional strength is similar to that of exaltation strength. Every planet have one houses position in which they gain directional strength: Sun and Mars, tenth house; Saturn, - seventh house; Moon and Venus, - fourth house; Jupiter and Mercury, - first house. For this system to work, a house system must consider the Midheaven as the cusp of the tenth house. 81. What are some of the limitations of Shadbala? Shadbala shows the basic strength and weakness of the planets but we have to look at chart for what they are empowered to do. Shadbala doesn’t appear to adequately consider planetary aspects. It reads aspectual strength into its factors but this doesn’t count for much 9it is rarely makes difference more then 5%). For chart reading aspects are more important then any Shadbala factors. Shadbala’s factors sometimes cansel each other out. While its calculations are each useful to consider in themselves, it is not always useful to average them all out. 82. How do the planets differ from the signs in the nature of their functioning? The signs represent the field of activity. The planets represent the forces in operation within that field. Signs are always retain their qualities in the chart. Planet’s qualities and their strength depend on position in charts (signs, aspects, Astrology of the Seers, Vedic Astrology Correspondence Course 17 conjunctions with another planets, qualities for different ascendants). Nature of signs is more or less static, while nature of planet is dynamic. 83. What does it mean if most of the planets in the chart are located below the horizon? It shows introvert nature of individual. More evolved type will be attracted to meditation. Natives with such chart will be unexpressive or withdraw their feelings or motivations. They can be successful in the outer world but they will work behind the scenes or through other people. 84. What does it mean if they are located above the horizon? Such position indicates extravert, outgoing, political nature of individual. Native will be communicative, but possibly superficial. More evolved type may express spirituality through work or communication. 85. Which issues tend to arise if most of the planets are in such opposite houses as the first and seventh? Main houses that govern wealth are second (gain through own effort) and eleventh house of income. Lords of those houses can create combinations for wealth, which are known as a Dhana Yoga. 87. How does the income giving properties of the eleventh house differ from that of the second? Second house shows gains through our own personal efforts or work we do with our hands or with our speech. Eleventh house gives income through our friends, associations and greater goals of life. 88. Why is the Moon important in any affairs relating to the public? The Moon represents our capacity to influence people, to have an impact upon society, to reach the masses. It gives popularity and recognition and keeps us in harmony with the trends of the time. 89. What factors indicate the partner in the birth chart of a woman? Of a man? Traditionally, from dharmic point of view, Jupiter represents partner (husband) for the women (eastern type). Mars also can be considered as a significator of partner for female but rather as sexual and emotional passion (that is more applicable for Astrology of the Seers, Vedic Astrology Correspondence Course 18 the western type of women). For the male relationship potential involves examination position of Venus. Other factors which should be considered for both male and female: seventh house and its lord. Position of Mars and its possible affliction to marriage should be examined (for presence of Kuja Dosha Yoga). As a secondary factor, fifth house (house of romance) and its lord can be examined for western people too. 90. What is Kuja Dosha? Certain positions of Mars in houses create difficulties in marriage and relationships, - that effect is named as a Kuja Dosha (blemish of Mars). The relevant houses are first, forth, seventh, eighth and twelfth. Exceptions are for the first house if the sign is Areas, for forth house if it is Scorpio, for the seventh if it is Capricorn or Pisces, for the eight if it is cancer and for the twelfth if it is a Sagittarius. Such placement should not be interpreted simplistically, since many charts have them. They should be reinforced by other negative influences to the sevens house, its lord and marriage significator. Kuja Dosha has many exceptions and four are the most important: 1) generally speaking, anyone who has Kuja Dosha can safely marry anyone else who has Kuja Dosha of approximately equal strength; 2) even the strongest Kuja Dosha is over and done after native reaches age thirty; 3) Mars in its own or exaltation rashi generally greatly modifies any Kuja Dosha; 4) The presence of the Moon in the house Mars occupies also cancels Kuja Dosha. 91. Why are Sun-Moon interchanges important in chart comparisons for relationship? The Moon represents the general social and emotional capacity for good relationships. It represents in man’s chart his capacity to relate to women. This should be examined for long term and general marital and domestic happiness. The Sun similarly represents the woman’s general capacity to relate to men. A weak or afflicted Sun may not give her openness to male energy necessary for a happy relationship. A woman with a weak Sun will often choose weak men as partners, as will a man with a weak Moon. 92. Why are Venus-Mars interchanges important? A Venus-Mars interchange signifies strong sexual drive in relationships. It is often not conductive to marital happiness because it causes us to seek additional fulfillment outside of marriage. Astrology of the Seers, Vedic Astrology Correspondence Course 19 93. Why should charts of partners have harmonious Moons and friendly planets ruling their Moons? As Moon represents our feelings, our social and personal side, it is important in all relationships. Moons of both partners should have good relationships, such as in trines from each other. Moons in opposite signs are usually favorable. The planets ruling the Moons in both charts should be friendly to each other. 94. How many Kuta points are regarded as favorable for marriage according to the traditional Hindu computativeb method? High compatibility is above 25 points. Good compatibility is usually above 20 points. Average is 18 points. 95. Of what use is the traditional Hindu computative method of relationship compatibility? Traditional Kuta system measures primary the compatibility between Moons and Nakshatras. It shows emotional affinity and the ability to function together as a family. Prominence of such evaluation is based on traditional Hindu values of marriage. However a good Moon relationship is not enough for a successful relationship, without consideration of placement of Jupiter and Venus between the charts. Relationship of Mars-Venus should also be considered for western couples. It is best to use computative method together with comparative method, - it will help to avoid superficial judgments. If points are low but the charts are otherwise in harmony, then it may be sufficient for a good relationship. If points are low, that can be counteracted (unless total points are below 10). If points are high but charts are not in harmony, then it will not be enough for a good relationship. We should examine Kuta system, as it is a quick to note, and then go into comparative analysis for more clear decision on the matter. 96. Why are benefics better located in trine and angular houses? Benefics in Kendra houses will bestow the worldly benefits and achievements. Benefics in Trines gives benefits on material and spiritual levels. Location in ninth house gives favors from outer sources, like parent, gurus, institutions and government. Location in fifth indicates beneficial collection of samskaras (as a cause of karma) and good intelligence. Generally planets in angular houses are stronger then in trine positions. 97. Why do malefics do better in Upachaya houses? Here they guard the health of the person and are a source of strength, vitality, motivation and give the capacity to Astrology of the Seers, Vedic Astrology Correspondence Course 20 do hard work and make great achievements. However if there is more then one malefic in sixth of eleventh houses, or there is malefic under malefic aspect, then it can cause health problems and harm other aspects of native’s life (in case of eleventh house). 98. What is more important generally, house or sign position for a planet? House position of planet generally is more important then sign position. A planet located in difficult house but exalted or in friendly sign will still cause problems. A weak or debilitated planet located in good houses will still give some good results. 99. How can two planets together form a Raja Yoga? Raja Yoga is produced by any combination of trine lords (1, 5, 9) and angle lords (1, 4, 7, 10). The best trine lord is ninth, then followed by fifth and first The tenth is the strongest among Kendra lords followed by fourth, first and seventh. Raja Yoga which involves sevens lord is very weak and should be considered only if stronger combinations exist in chart. Some astrologers don’t consider aspects between trine and angle lords as Raja Yoga. Raja Yoga formed by one planet was discussed earlier. 100.How is the Dashamsha chart used? The tenth divisional chart (Dashamsha) is much like tenth house in meaning. It shows native’s karmic impact upon world at large. It is important source of information about vocation, career and achievements. It should be examined along with tenth house and it’s lord in Rashi, Sun, Mercury, Jupiter and other factors for career.
