To:

I am writing to voice my support for the student community at Baggins End.

Specifically, I ask UC

Davis administrators to let students remain on the land, maintaining their homes, cultivating their gardens, and sustaining this educational resource for the larger community.

The Baggins End Domes community has been a hub for environmental and social innovation for 40 years. The Domes is a landmark for the city of Davis and an invaluable and irreplaceable asset to UC

Davis. The loss of this inspiring community would be a tragic mistake at a time when innovations in sustainability and community building are needed more than ever.

A coalition of students, faculty, and community leaders have developed a clear and reasonable plan for how to affordably maintain and manage this educational resource. proposal, which includes the option of working with the Solar Community Housing Association (SCHA) as a third party property manager, would allow students to stay at the Domes while the community-at-large engages in a long-term planning process.

I urge UC Davis to work with the proposal developed by faculty, students residents, and SCHA to allow the Domes community to remain on-site until a long term plan has been developed.

The Baggins End Domes is a valuable asset to UC Davis’ reputation within the city, the state of

California, and the global community. As an educational center, the student-led program nurtures, empowers, and networks residents to achieve careers as leaders in academia, education, arts, and science. As a community institution, the Domes has inspired generations of community leaders who developed world-famous communities like: Village Homes and N Street Co-housing, . The Domes acts as a creative think-and-do tank at the heart of treasured Davis institutions, as residents and alumni worked to found the Davis Food Co-op, the Davis Bike Collective, the Davis Feminist Film Festival, and the Davis Farmer’s Market.

[The Domes had a powerful impact on my professional career / education / research. Write here about how the Domes acted as a resource / educational influence in your own life. This part is critical – UC

Davis admin is most concerned about their reputation as an educational & research institution, so please tie here to that mission.]

Akin to any culture, community continuity and place are critical to Baggins End. The unique setting, and memories of building, maintaining, and living in the Domes and farming the surrounding land, cement a community identity that is inextricably tied to the place. This identity nurtures a strong network of alumni and friends that mentor new generations to live as active contributors in the world. Students inherit a cooperative sense of ownership, stories and traditions that are passed to every new student through an oral tradition that reach back to the student pioneer builders of 1972.

Now is not the time to destroy the community – it is time to strengthen Baggins End.

The remarkable program costs UC Davis nothing, and has been self-sustaining with student rents since its inception in 1972. While Student Housing developed an estimate for repairing the Domes that would cost over $900,000, the Baggins End students have worked with faculty and community leaders to develop a plan that would address all immediate physical concerns for less than $60,000, well within current earmarked funds managed by Student Housing and SCHA.

If administered by SCHA, this offers a fair and reasonable solution for all concerns.

The Solar Community Housing Association is a responsible local nonprofit that has developed and managed cooperative housing in Davis for over 30 years. They have experience with multi-stakeholder projects, renovation, and managing cooperative, lowdensity housing. I’m confident that the recent proposal will provide the University with an economically viable solution to address code compliance concerns, while preserving this irreplacable educational resource for future generations.

Sincerely,
