Partners Fall 2010 Volume 25 Number 3 Newsletter Published by: Guide Dogs of America 13445 Glenoaks Blvd. Sylmar, CA 91342 (818) 362-5834 FAX: (818) 362-6870 E-MAIL mail@guidedogsofamerica.org WEBSITE www.guidedogsofamerica.org EDITOR Lorri Bernson CONTRIBUTORS Dale Hartford FEATURE ARTICLE – 6th ANNUAL PARADE OF PARTNERS This year, Guide Dogs of America celebrates its 6th Annual Parade of Partners. This issue of Partners is where we take the opportunity to publicly thank many of our generous donors and volunteers, without whom the program could not exist. Joining the celebration this year is GDA’s new president, Dale Hartford, who is happy to carry on this wonderful tradition recognizing the hundreds of families, individuals and organizations that have contributed their time and resources to the school during this past fiscal year (July 1, 2009 to June 30, 2010). “Since arriving in January, I have had the opportunity to meet many of our generous volunteers and donors and have been inspired by their commitment to the school and its mission,” said Hartford. “With every hour of time they volunteer or dollar they donate, they make it possible for us to continue to help blind and visually impaired men and women pursue their goals with increased mobility and independence. I wish I could personally thank every one of our supporters and express the gratitude that I feel, that the staff feels and the appreciation of our graduates.” Guide Dogs of America graduates approximately 50 guide dog teams a year at a cost of more than $40,000 per team. That number does not include the countless volunteer hours, which cannot possibly be measured. GDA is proud to continue to offer its service at no cost to our graduates and without any government support. To all of you and the many Partners both new and returning we want to extend our deepest gratitude for your support. Whether you are a frequent visitor to GDA or if you live hundreds or thousands of miles away, we hope that with each issue of Partners we bring you closer to the school and that you enjoy reading the articles and news about the organization and the incredible people and dogs behind our program. We want to thank all of you for thinking of GDA and ask that you continue to keep us close to your hearts. In addition to the names listed here, we would also like to thank the numerous families, individuals and organizations who volunteered their time, made monetary donations, or designated GDA in charitable giving programs. If we have inadvertently left your name off of any of the lists or you would like to find out how to be included in next year’s Parade of Partners, contact Lorri Bernson at (818) 833-6431 or lmbernson@guidedogsofamerica.org. VET’S CORNER At-Home Health Care – Checking Your Dog’s Eyes, Ears, Mouth and Nose Dogs find out what is happening in their world by sniffing and investigating everything around them. As a result, their eyes, ears, nose and mouth are exposed to irritants that can put them at a greater risk of injury or infection. While regular vet check-ups are critical, being aware of certain signs and symptoms of illness can help prevent serious problems from developing. Home health care for dogs begins with an examination you can do yourself. It should only take a few minutes, and your dog will love the attention. Below, learn more about signs of a healthy dog. Eyes – Healthy eyes are bright. Mucus and watery tears are normal, but should be minimal and clear. The pink lining of the eyelids should not be inflamed, swollen or have a yellow discharge. A dog with an infected eye will rub it, so if you notice a lot of rubbing going on, have a closer look. You can prevent problems by keeping your dog’s eyes clean. Wipe around each eye gently with a clean cotton ball soaked in warm water. Ears – The skin of a healthy inner ear should be pink without any waxy dark brown secretion in the canal, as well as odor-free. There should be no redness or swelling inside the ear. If you notice your dog scratching at his ears or excessively rubbing the side of his face against the floor or other surfaces, suspect an infection or other problem. Keep your puppy's ears healthy by gently cleaning easy-to-reach external areas with a cotton ball moistened with warm water. Do not probe into the ear. Nose – Smell is your dog’s most acute sense; with it, he learns the most about her environment. A cool, wet nose does not necessarily mean the dog is healthy, and a dry, warm nose doesn’t necessarily mean he’s sick. Taking his temperature is a better indication of illness. Nasal discharge should be clear, never yellowish, thick, bubbly or foul-smelling. Mouth, Teeth and Gums – Dental disease is one of the most common health problems in dogs, yet it can be easily prevented. Begin brushing your puppy's teeth two or three times a week when your puppy is very young to keep teeth and gums healthy. Healthy gums are pink and should be firm. Check gums by lifting the upper lip then open the mouth to see that all of the teeth are white and free of any soft or hard matter. BRICK BY BRICK Help Build GDA’s New Graduation Area by Purchasing a Personalized Commemorative Brick Construction is almost complete on the new 40’ x 80’ canopy that will cover and shade our graduation area (see photo). Also included in the project are a stage, lighting, speakers and ceiling fans that will make the new addition more comfortable for our graduates and guests. You can help to fund this project by purchasing a Commemorative Brick, which will be used to line the walkways around our new graduation area. Each brick measures 4” x 8” and can be personalized with your name, your pet’s name, special dedication and/or memorial etched on the brick (two lines; up to 26 characters per line — character count includes spaces and punctuation). The donation for each brick is $150. To order, please fill out and mail the order form in this newsletter or place your order via our secure website at www.guidedogsofamerica.org. If you have any questions, please call our main line: (818) 362-5834. Photo Caption: The new Graduation Area is nearly complete. The structure’s roof is made from Sunbrella, a durable, sun-filtering, water-resistant and easy-to-maintain fabric. Three sides have roll-up/-down clear, flexible vinyl panels and can be adjusted as weather conditions dictate. The fourth wall will be white with the blue GDA logo printed in the center to serve as a backdrop. EVERYDAY AND EASY WAYS TO MAKE A DONATION TO GDA We thank all of you who choose to contribute to GDA by shopping at participating grocery stores with your club cards. By registering your cards (details follow) and designating GDA, a percentage of your total grocery bill is donated to the school every time you shop. The following provides important instructions about how to register your club card to begin or renew your support of GDA. Ralphs Register or renew your Ralphs Rewards Card through the Ralphs website (www.ralphs.com) to designate Guide Dogs of America as your charity of choice. To register your card for the first time, click on “Services,” then “Community Contributions,” then “Enroll.” In the “Find Your Organization” field, type Guide Dogs of America. If you have registered your card previously, Ralphs requires that you renew your registration each September in order to continue to contribute to GDA. Login to your account, confirm your information is correct and click on “Edit Community Contributions Information” and, once again, designate Guide Dogs of America. Click on “Save Changes” and log out. A percentage of your purchases will begin accruing within 72 hours of your online registration/renewal. Within seven to 10 business days, you will see at the bottom of your Ralphs receipt: “At your request, Ralphs is donating to Guide Dogs of America.” If you have questions or need assistance, please call (818) 833-6438. Food 4 Less If you have a Food 4 Less Card, you do not need to register or renew the card. If you don’t have a card, please call (818) 833-6438 and we will send you a preregistrated card that will ensure a percentage of every purchase you make is donated to GDA. Amazon Amazon.com isn’t only for books and music – you can buy most anything, while at the same time giving to GDA. If you are planning on shopping at Amazon.com, first logon to the GDA website (www.guidedogsofamerica.org), click on the Amazon logo, and start shopping from there! A percentage of your total purchase will be automatically donated to GDA. Journey to Independence Begins with a Round-trip Ticket Our GDA students come from all over the United States and Canada, which means, for many of them, their 28-day training at the school begins and ends on an airplane. GDA is able to cover 100% of all students’ travel expenses, including airline tickets, by purchasing their tickets using frequent flyer miles on United Airlines that have been donated to the school. If you or someone you know have unused miles with United Airlines’ Mileage Plus program, they can be donated directly to GDA to help support our program. To donate your miles, have your account number ready and contact United Mileage Plus Customer Service at (800) 421-4655. Call GDA at (818) 833-6432 for any assistance. GoodSearch.com/GoodShop.com Every time you search or shop on the Internet, you can make a donation to Guide Dogs of America … and it’s so easy. GoodSearch.com is a Yahoo-powered search engine that donates half its advertising revenue, about a penny per search, to the charities its users designate. Use it just as you would any search engine, get quality search results, and watch the donations add up! GoodShop.com is an online shopping mall that donates up to 30 percent of each purchase to your favorite cause. Hundreds of well-known retail stores including Target, Gap, Best Buy, eBay, Macy's and Barnes & Noble have teamed up with GoodShop and every time you place an order, you'll be supporting your favorite cause. And if you use GoodSearch as your computer’s default search engine and enter Guide Dogs of America when asked for your charity, our cause will earn money every time you shop or even just search online. We hope that you will share this helpful information with your friends and family. Give to GDA as Your Gift to Family, Friends and Loved Ones this Holiday Season A very special way to support GDA during the holidays is to make a contribution in the name of your family, loved ones and friends. Your contribution lets those important people on your list know how much you care about the work we do. It also lets them know they have been remembered by you in a thoughtful way that makes them a part of giving the gift of companionship and mobility to those who are visually impaired. A handwritten card, with a special message, will be sent to those you designate with your donation. For more information, call (818) 8336429. Matching Gifts Many companies offer a matching gift program to their employees. These programs match, dollar-for-dollar, charitable contributions made by an employee, doubling the donation made to Guide Dogs of America! If you are thinking of making a donation to Guide Dogs of America, ask your employer if it offers a matching gift program. Year-Round Giving One Month at a Time Many of our supporters make monthly donations to GDA using our convenient automatic donation program. At the beginning of each month, we automatically charge your credit card in the amount you specify. At year’s end, you will receive a thank you letter with a donation total for your tax records. Call (818) 833-6429 with questions or to participate. IF YOU WOULD LIKE TO LEND A PAW… In this issue of the GDA newsletter, we are committed to recognizing our “Partners” for the time, energy and resources they contribute to support GDA and its mission: To provide loyal and loving guide dogs, free of charge, to blind and visually impaired individuals. We thank our breeding dog families whose commitment to our program and dedication to keeping our breeder dogs healthy, happy and safe ensure future generations of guides. For information about our Breeding Program, please contact Meri Forman at (818) 833-6461. Even more remarkable is their acceptance that the puppy they have raised for the past year-and-a-half has reached a milestone. This milestone requires they give up the dog they have grown to love and return it to GDA to begin formal training for the job it was bred and born to do. We would like to recognize the extraordinary dedication of and sacrifices made by our puppy raisers and sincerely thank these families and individuals, without whom we would not have a program. For information about becoming a puppy raiser, visit the GDA website, www.guidedogsofamerica.org, and click on “Puppy Raising” or call Louise Henderson at (818) 833-6441.
