No chewing gum. 2. No jewelry. 3. Long hair must be tied back away from face. 4. Always make sure there is proper matting under each apparatus. 5. Always make sure your spotter knows which skill you are going to attempt in advance. 6. Make sure your spotter is ready to assist you before you attempt a skill. 7. Check all equipment for stability. 8. Stay on task and only work on the skills that are taught in class. Terms to Know: 1. Tuck – knees brought up toward the chest 2. Squat – squat down, knees to chest, weight on feet 3. Straddle – legs are straight and split apart to the side 4. Stride – legs are straight and split apart – front and back 5. Pike – legs are straight and together in front of the body, bend at waist 6. Flank – side of the body is facing the apparatus 7. Mount – getting onto the equipment 8. Dismount – getting off of the equipment 9. Horse – apparatus used for vaulting, hands make contact 10. Reuther Board – the spring board used for vaulting and mounting apparatus 11. Vault – movement over the horse/vault table 12. Extension – complete stretch of the body 13. Flexion - bending of body parts 14. Inverted – upside down 15. Prone – stomach facing floor 16. Supine – back facing floor 17. Kinesthetic Awareness – knowledge of body in time and space 18. Scale – balance on one leg 19. Pivot – turn on balls of feet Laws of Gravity: 1. The center of gravity for women is in the hips. It is higher for men. 2. The center of gravity must be over the base of support, or you will fall. 3. When spotting, it is best to apply pressure to the center of gravity. Gymnastics Events: Both men and women participate in the sport of gymnastics. There are four events for women, six events for men and eight different pieces of apparatus. Both men and women compete in the floor exercise and vault, although the events differ significantly. The article must be related to gymnastics. All abstracts must be completed by the last day of the unit.
