From the Library Corner Dear 3rd graders and parents, Welcome to Jefferson School’s third grade Battle of the Books. We have ten wonderful titles on the reading list for this year’s battle. Be a Perfect Person in Just Three Days! by Stephen Manes The Hidden Stairs and the Magic Carpet by Tony Abbott Gooney Bird Greene by Lois Lowry Knights of the Kitchen Table by Jon Scieszka Miss Daisy is Crazy! by Dan Gutman The Mouse and the Motorcycle by Beverly Cleary My Teacher Ate My Homework by Dan Greenburg The Sloppy Copy Slipup by DyAnne DiSalvo The Story of Thomas Alva Edison: The Wizard of Menlo Park by Margaret Davidson Who was Helen Keller? by Gare Thompson Every student is expected to read at least three of these titles over the next ten weeks. All books should be read by the week of June 3, 2013 at which time the class battles will occur. The battles will take place during library periods. The purpose of the Battle of the Books is fourfold: To build reading fluency and comprehension To work cooperatively as a team To create a shared experience within the grade level To give students some wonderful authors/series they might choose to read for their summer reading. Students will be places on balanced teams of 4-6 students from their class. In the “battle,” the teams are asked ten questions by the librarian. All questions begin “In what book…” and relate to character, plot, and setting. Points are awarded for the correct title and author. The team members confer before a spokesperson gives the answer. Team members take turns being spokesperson. Individual awards are earned by the number of books read. All students reading three books will receive a certificate of participation. Students reading five titles will receive a certificate and an eraser. Those students reading all ten books will receive a certificate, an eraser, and a pencil. Let the reading begin!
