TEXAS STATE ARCHERY ASSOCIATION Texas State Archery Association 15711 Seaside Ln. Houston, Tx. 77062 affix address label here TEXAS STATE ARCHERY ASSOCIATION since 1983 The year 2000 had been an exciting year for archery in Texas. Our fine archers have earned many major achievements. The year 2000 has also brought us into the computer age by offering up-to-the-minute results from across the state, the nation and around the world. Archery has never been closer to our fingers than it has this year. The TSAA has changed from a bi-monthly newsletter to an annual newsletter, at least as far as a hardcopy. Anyone wishing to read up-to-the-minute information on the TSAA can log on anytime. Anyone who does not have access to the internet can request a hardcopy and one will be created and sent to you. This was the same promise I made last year and not one person requested a hardcopy which indicates that anyone interested in archery, has computer access and that is wonderful. But, as I promised last year, I would create an annual hardcopy that every Texas archer that belongs to the NAA can see how the year went and a short wrap-up of the major events. This newsletter can be copied and sent to new people in hopes they might get interested in archery. The newsletter is in chronological order. The officers and calendar are on one sheet for your convenience. This annual newsletter will contain a summary of the events of the year 2000 and for complete results, standings, and scores, visit the TSAA website. Thanks to Ron Carmichael for taking over as Secretary/Treasurer. His computer skills have been extensively used to create the TSAA website and maintain its database. We remind everyone to send your e-mail address to the TSAA so we can get you on our dist-list. Send any e-mail address changes to SecTreas@Texasarchery.org The web address for the TSAA is: www.Texasarchery.org I want to personally thank all the archers, parents, and kids for making the TSAA a wonderful organization. It is fun shooting on the same target and learn different things about them. I learned new techniques from people. You also get to watch world class archers shoot. Everybody needs to try the team round, because it is the most fun. Thank you for introducing me to archery.” Matthew J. Rankings are based on the best two finishes in the three State Championships (JOAD are based on the State Indoor and State Target.) An archer receives 25 points for a first place finish. All others in that division receive a 1/10th deduction for every point difference behind the winning score. The complete Ranking tables can be found on the TSAA website. The score did move them up to 11th place. The team consisted of Chris Harris, Eric Zahn, and Justin Wilson. Although Vic Wunderle is not living in Texas at the present time, but he was a member of the TSAA before deciding to leave school temporarily and move to the USOC training center in San Diego, so I thought it fitting to give him some ink! Not only did Vic make the Olympic team but also he earned a Silver medal and helped propel the US team to a Bronze. Vic was ranked 27th going into the Olympics but emerged in 6th place. His marched through the elimination rounds with scores of: 160, 152, 171, 108, 108 and a 106. Simon Fairweather of Australia shot a final round 113 to claim the Gold. Vic was selected by the NAA Board of Governors as its Male Athlete of the Year for 2000. The mighty TEAM TEXAS A&M made some big waves in the Male Recurve team event. After being seeded 16, they roared off scores of 227, 242, 247, and a 243 to come up two points shy of winning the division and finished 2nd. The only team good enough to defeat Guy Krueger, Chris Shull and Greg Krueger was the US OLYMPIC TEAM (which earned a Bronze medal at the Olympics in Sydney, Australia in September.) “Good showing AGGIES!” In the Female Recurve team event, Stacie Grange, Erin Chastain, and Rhonda Shaner comprised the team TWO AGGIES AND A DUKE that was seeded 6th and with scores of 204, 203, and another 203, moved up a couple notches to 4th place. The top 32 women and the top 64 men are placed in brackets for the Olympic round. How our TSAA people fared in the Elimination rounds: Only two Female Compound teams and no Texans. In the Female Recurve division, Dawn Chudy shot a 147 in the opening round and finished in 18th place. Erin Chastain shot a 143 and finished 20th while Stacie Grange placed 23rd with a 138. CONGRATULATIONS GUY KRUEGER In the Male Recurve division, Greg Krueger shot 159, 160, 163 and a 104 to finish with a very fine 6th place. Guy Krueger had an opening round bye, then shot a 160 and another 160 to finish 12th. Chris Shull shot a 157 and 150 to finish 21st. In the Male Compound division, Eric Zahn and Chris Harris shot good scores of 167 and 164 respectively, but they did not advance and finished 39th and 48th. As if Guy hasn’t already accomplished a whole lot this year, he is named as a member of the USAT team and falls in line with a whole lot of other talented TSAA archers who have achieved this accomplishment. USAT members are determined by placing well at certain high profile tournaments throughout the year. It takes a lot of skill and determination to be placed on this team and only eight recurve men are selected each year! Good work -9- . . PARALYMPICS by Rick Stonebraker Paralympics means the events are parallel with the Olympics. They are not handicap archers - the correct term is “Archers with disabilities.” To say the least, the Paralympics was one of the most exciting events I have ever had the privilege to be a part of. Being a judge at the 1996 Olympics in Atlanta was great and competing in two world championships was great. However, I can honestly say those accomplishments pale in comparison to being involved with these courageous and upbeat archers at the Paralympics. From the moment I set foot on the archery venue, I could tell I was around an enthusiastic group of archers. They were positive, fun and enjoying archery as well as enjoying life. Sure, they had minor disabilities and some major disabilities but they did not dwell over them nor did they complain. I found that the attitude of the Paralympian archer is about ‘what they can do’ and not about ‘what they cannot do’. One of the most creative archers is Larry Townes of the United States. Unable to use his right arm, he uses his teeth to draw and shoot an arrow. Larry places the bow between his thighs and loads his bow with his left hand. There is a nylon strap sewn just below the nocking point. Once loaded, he holds the grip with his left hand, grasps the strap with his teeth and pushes the bow forward with his left arm. He takes steady aim and when ready, he relaxes his hold and the arrow is sped to the target. Larry placed fourth at his very first Paralympics.
