Internship nr: SCM 148 ___________________________________________________________________________ Company Project Location Start project Duration project Remuneration : Stichting Logistica / Polytechnic Rotterdam : 2 projects : Rotterdam, Leidschendam : As soon as possible : To be discussed : To be discussed Description Company/ Department In cooperation with Stichting Logistica (the organizer of the 3-annual international fair in material handling systems ; also sector organization for companies in the area of material handling systems and Logistic Consultants), Leidschendam and with the Polytechnic Rotterdam (HES) we are seeking master students who want to do a thesis project on one of the following subjects. Both projects will be financed by Stichting Logistica. Part of the work should be done at the premises of logistics companies linked to Stichting Logistica (see their website). 1) Research aiming to find a relation between Worker Commitment, Motivation and Company (logistical) Performance. The research will primarily aim at smaller companies with warehouse operations. The research builds on two past master thesis projects. - The first one describing, measuring and validating the construct 'Job satisfaction' (case based) - The second one is still going on, trying to identify relations between Job Satisfaction and Performance (multiple case based) This research is probably more survey oriented. Basis idea behind it is that motivated people (particularly order pickers) are becoming more and more hard to find and to retain. Companies have to do more to retain good people and have to compete for scarce resources. Companies able to give a better proposition to their employees (blue collar workers) have a competitive advantage. The question is also which instruments companies should use to create worker commitment. 2) Answering the following Research Question: When to use which storage and order picking system to have maximum performance? We want to develop a score-card for warehouse operations, starting with inbound operations, via putaway, storage systems, order patterns, product features and order picking, sorting, packing to shipping operations. We have multiple objectives: - developing the score card (finding company data will partly be done by HBO-HES students) - finding relations between storage and order picking methods and performance (unit cost, quality, speed, flexibility) The method will build on previously developed benchmarking methods for warehouse operations, but will focus more on storage and order picking. Its objective is to serve as an aid for companies to select a proper storage and order picking system based on company and environment properties (receipts, assortment, customer order patterns) .
