Rescue operations remain unchanged from day to day and ERP contact list should be followed for each day of trip, excluding Sunday April 15th and Tuesday April 24th. It is unnecessary to contact Search and Rescue during those times as any Emergency will be dealt with by the 911 or CAA during travel days. In the event of an emergency, our first steps will be to assess the scene and provide any basic WFR first aid. Brodie or Jordy would then establish communication with both the proper medical authorities and Jeff Jackson. Activities We have chosen a 8 day 7 night canoe trip on Georgian Bay and the Trent Severn Waterway. The main activities will be paddling and portaging but there are several other activities that we need to do in order to successfully complete the trip. These activities include: Chart & Compass Work – Orienteering the islands and waterways to stay on our route Camp Craft – Group cooking and Leave No Trace camping practices Weather Prediction – To ensure safe travel MAFOR Translation – To help predict weather and wind 15 Group Brief/Debrief – Letting the group know the days plan and how things went 4. Location Geographical Area Georgian Bay is made throughout the Canadian Shield, the lakes were formed from shifting and movements in the tectonic plates. Being made up of mainly rocks we will be paddling through steep riverbanks and portaging around small sections of white water. The Trent Severn water way consists of 44 locks making up the 389Km stretch of water, this waterway connects multiple towns and lakes along with providing power with their hydroelectric dams. We will not be paddling through the entire lock system, we are starting at lock45 and ending at lock42. Because of the time of year there will be little boat traffic witch will make our trip easier. Permits The only permits we need during our trip are on the first two nights. The campsites on Beausoleil Island require visitors to fill out a self-registration on arrival to a site. Cash or credit card information left with a permit form in a lock box at each site. The receipt for the permit must be displayed at the campground. While travelling through the Trent Severn Waterway there is a chance we may need to purchase permits to stay at the campsites, but since this is early in the season most of these sites are not yet in service, so camping will be free. Extra money will be at hand in case of surprise fees. For those in the group who wish to fish on the trip will have to purchase a fishing license prior. The fish in season during our trip are perch, trout, catfish and salmon. 5. Itinerary/Route In the event of an EMERGENCY, contact Jeff Jackson and activate Emergency Response Plan. Rescue operations remain unchanged from day to day and ERP contact list should be followed for each day of trip, excluding Monday April 16th and Tuesday April 24th. Monday April 21st Tuesday April 22nd Wednesday April 23rd Paddle to swift rapids and Paddle to Harrison Lock and Paddle lake coochiching and portage it. portage it. take out at YLCC. Season/Conditions Since it was a mild winter, the ice moved out early. This has ensured that our route will not be plagued by ice. The water temperature will be somewhere in the range of 5°C – 10°C, we will have warm gear for paddling and many also have dry-suits. We will be sticking to flat water, so there is no need to bring helmets or other white water gear. We are expecting to have some cold, wet days, but the long term forecast shows favorable canoeing conditions on some days. 17 Trip Itinerary Trip Itinerary Day/ time of trip Day one Am Pm Day Two Am Pm Day Three Am Pm Day Four Am Pm Day Five Am Pm Day Six Am Pm Day Seven Am Pm Day Eight Am Pm Day Nine Am Pm Daily Activity Location and Points of Interest Driving Driving Pembroke Ont Orillia Ont, Youth Leadership Camps Canada(YLCC) Put In YLCC / Put in – Go Home Bay Goblin Bay - Beausoleil Canoeing Canoeing Goblin Bay - Beausoleil McKray Provincial Lake Park Canoeing Canoeing McKray Provincial Lake Park Thumb Point - Beasoleil Canoeing Canoeing Thumb Point - Beasoleil Beuna Vista Point Canoeing Canoeing Beuna Vista Point Pretty Channel Canoeing Canoeing Pretty Channel Swift Rapids Canoeing Canoeing Swift Rapids Harrison Lock Canoeing Driving Harrison Lock Pembroke 18 Route Cards 19 Expected Difficulties Day 1: April 16, 2012 Loading the boats onto the truck and trailer. Buena Vista will take a long time to clean up. Day 6: April 21, 2012 Portaging Whites Falls Damn will be the third hardest portage, we will have to portage over across the road. Day 7: April 22, 2012 We will have to portage over big cute and it will take some time. The hardest portage of our trip will be swift rapids and that’s the last part of our day. Day 8: April 23, 2012 There will be a lot of boat traffic through the Trent Severn waterway. Day 9: April 24, 2012 Lake Coochiching will be extremely windy. 20 There are a lot of concealed rocks close to the shore that we have to look out for. Difficulties for day 9 will be dense traffic in highly populated corridor from Ottawa to Quebec City. Back Up Plan If any problems arise and we are forced to abandon our plans canoeing, we will be doing a hiking trip in Algonquin Park. It has ease of access to trails and would take only minor alterations to our gear list. It is a location within easy driving distance from Pembroke and we have trip plans that are already created for a variety of hiking trips. Canoeing and hiking are similar, so training and preparation for the trip would not need to change too much. 21 6.
