3. Partition circles and rectangles into two, three, or four equal shares, describe the
shares using the words halves, thirds, half of, a third of, etc., and describe the whole
as two halves, three thirds, four fourths. Recognize that equal shares of identical
wholes need not have the same shape.

Smart Start
Have the students identify some fractions to assess their prior knowledge. Briefly
review fractional notation and the terms numerator and denominator.

Just as we can divide shapes into fractional parts we can also find a fraction of a set.
The first slide shows a collection of items and shows how to find a fraction of that
set. Teach students to look at the total number of items in the set and that becomes
the denominator of the fraction. The part of the set which is being discussed is the
numerator. Students can come up to the Smartboard to find other fractional parts of
the set. Students look at other sets to answer questions about fractions. Students
can view a video about fractions. Finally, students can play a fraction game by
clicking on a picture of a fraction.
Students will have a worksheet called Ladybugs, Ladybugs. They will have to color a
fractional part of a collection of ladybugs.
Conclusion
Go over the Ladybug worksheet with the class.
