The position is interdependent with a posting to teach 3 courses during AY09. Candidates must
apply for both positions.
The University of Michigan’s College of Literature, Science and the Arts seeks a highly
motivated and inspired person to serve as Associate Director of the Program on Intergroup
Relations. The Program on Intergroup Relations is a joint academic and student affairs program
concerning social diversity and social justice. A sequence of at least eight courses is offered,
with special attention to Intergroup Dialogue pedagogy (a formal methodology developed at
UM and now employed nationally).
Duties:
The LSA Associate Director of The Program on Intergroup Relations works with students
and staff in providing education about social diversity and social justice; assists in developing
and administering IGR’s curriculum and instructional materials; provides support and guidance
for other IGR faculty and graduate students; supports and participates in IGR’s research
program; and provides campus and national leadership in the area of intergroup relations and
social justice education. The LSA Associate Director works in partnership with the Division of
Student Affairs Co-Director and Associate Director to provide an inclusive atmosphere of
collaboration and shared decision-making for IGR. As mentioned above, the LSA Associate
Director of The Program on Intergroup Relations teaches three courses per year. The Associate
Director also provides budget management for the program; hires, selects, and evaluates staff
members; and coordinates administrative policies with LSA.
Desired Qualifications:
 Ph.D. in psychology, sociology, education, or related field.
 Expertise in Intergroup Relations theory and Intergroup Dialogue pedagogy.
 Demonstrated success in working with and participating in academic
programs about social diversity.
 Demonstrated research expertise, preferably in quantitative methods.
 Skills in higher education administration.









Potential ability to create and execute curricular and other academic
programs about social diversity.
Strong leadership and team building skills, especially in the creation of
democratic, non-hierarchial environments.
Demonstrated ability to work with multiple projects and prioritize deadlines.
Well-developed interpersonal skills and excellent oral and written

The Program on Intergroup Relations (IGR) at the University of Michigan invites applications
for a position as Adjunct Lecturer to begin September 1, 2008. The successful candidate is likely
to have substantial experience in intergroup dialogue pedagogy, social justice education, and
experiential teaching. The position will teach three courses each academic year, with at least
one course being taught each term [Fall and Winter]. Among the courses to be taught include
the processes of intergroup dialogues facilitation; a practicum in facilitating
intergroup dialogues, and a first year seminar and/or foundations of intergroup relations. This is
not a tenure track position. Criteria for renewal are classroom teaching, curriculum
development, curriculum service, and pedagogical research, with classroom teaching receiving
the greatest weight.
The instructor will work with students who participate in weekly seminars to deepen their
knowledge and personal development regarding social identity and multicultural issues, and to
learn effective facilitation skills for on-going dialogue groups. Courses incorporate theoretical
learning and practice regarding group dynamics, conflict intervention skills, and intergroup
communication and community building.
Terms and conditions of employment for this position are subject to the provisions of a
Collective Bargaining Agreement between the University of Michigan and the Lecturers'
Employee Organization.

DEPARTMENT QUALIFICATIONS:
The candidate must hold a Ph.D in Psychology, Education, Sociology or a terminal degree in a
closely related field. The candidate must have experience with teaching courses devoted to
intergroup relations theory and Intergroup Dialogue pedagogy (preferably, as developed at the
University of Michigan) and in working with a variety of culturally and ethnically diverse
populations.
