1) What is the purpose of stage make-up in theatre or film as seen with the
300 video clip?
2) What effects are created with stage make-up?
3) How does the technology we have today influence stage make-up?
In order to understand why we are going to be learning about make-up in
this week, we need to understand its purpose and history in theatre

Discuss the role of Makeup in Theatre & Culture
(p.127 in Theatre Arts 2 Student Handbook)
1) Explain how Makeup styles have progressed over time
(p. 1-13 in Creative Theatrical Makeup by Arnink)
2) Show students images on the Smartboard of male and females using
make-up in different periods such as:
- Ancient (Egyptians)
- Greeks (Men-Health Salons) & Romans (fastidious about personal care)
-Medieval (Crusades)
- 1500s (Elizabethan Wigs)
-1600s (Curls and Waves Wigs)
- 1700s (Brutus Crop prevailed towards the end of the century)
- 1800s (Shorter hair for men & beards, Women braiding and using
feathers)
- Early 1990s (Women sporting shorter hair = Flappers)

*** Have students discuss and share their observations about male/female
make-up during each period***
Ask key questions:
- In this given period, what specific physical structure of the face is
emphasized with make-up?
- Are there any movies you know that focus on this type of makeup style?
Differentiate between abstract, straight and character makeups
1) Character Makeup
- Ask students to make predictions first of what character makeup is
- Character makeup is any of the above in Learning Activity #1, including
special effects- makeup is for a specific role

- Ask students to make predictions first of what Abstract makeup is

stage makeup today.
- Share with whole class
Compliment on participation/enthusiasm- encourage students to be open
and positive about experiencing stage make-up for the first time
Tomorrow, we will begin experimenting with makeup so make sure you
bring your lidded box/container, washcloth and soap- otherwise you cannot
participate.
