Description: This culminating unit draws together the skills of research, analysis, selection of appropriate media, creation
of media and various writing forms from each of the preceding units and provides an opportunity for the students to
demonstrate their personal understanding of a media issue. The final product can take the form of a multimedia
campaign about one issue that was either covered in the course or which they identify as being of strong interest to
them. Students choose an audience for their campaign and they must use a variety of media forms in their campaign.
The assessment of this unit should form a substantial portion of the final evaluation for the course.

Description: In this unit, you choose an issue in the media and prepare a proposal for a multimedia campaign about that
issue. Movies promos (promotions) are studied. You investigate facts pertaining to your chosen issue, including copyright
law. You find and select a media example related to your chosen issue and share it with the class. You then create and
administer a survey based on the media example that you found and chose for analysis. A report to the class is created,
offering the results of the survey. A detailed project update includes: resources, time lines, production needs, successes
and problems. You submit your multimedia campaign to the teacher for summative evaluation and post it for feedback
from your classmates. You also complete a written reflection on the experience of completing a multimedia campaign.

Description: The unit involves a study of Shakespeare’s play Romeo and Juliet. Students research William
Shakespeare to explore how an author is influenced by the world in which he/she lives. The structure and language
of the play is examined. Students become familiar with the various styles of writing Shakespeare incorporated into
his plays, including the soliloquy and the sonnet. Elements of the play: theme, plot and the decisions and/or action
of the characters, are studied to see how they are interwoven and impact each other. The culminating activity builds

Description: In this unit students will gain familiarity with the form of Informational Text and will be given definitions
for "imply" and "infer." Through the close study of popular news and free email websites, they will discover patterns
in the packaging of information. Next they will become familiar with editorials, editorial cartoons, and news reports
as forms of informational text. They will examine the role that the audience, purpose, proposition, tone, and
evidence plays in the development of an editorial. Through the use of online web sites, they will read and analyze
editorials, editorial cartoons and news reports from various newspapers. Next students will select a current
issue/topic and write their own editorial and create an editorial cartoon to share with their class. They will also write
or videotape their own news story. Finally, they will demonstrate their understanding of Informational Text by

Description: In this unit, you will review news terms and expand your news term vocabulary. You will investigate
print and televised news forms and will analyse and report your findings. You will also brainstorm a list of news

for the final activity. You will provide an outline of your final project which must meet with teacher approval before

will then use your interviewing skills to make discoveries about your friends, classmates, peers or someone you

and Juliet. The study of Romeo and Juliet will encourage you to explore relationships and themes that transcend
time: love and hate. Through a variety of activities, such as writing news reports, obituaries, invitations, poems and
scenes, you will explore, in detail, old ideas in a modern world.

Description: In this unit, students will learn about the history of visual storytelling, including “Manga” and Western
comic books and graphic novels. Definitions for “genre” and “era” are given. Students will tell a story visually (like a
tapestry or cave painting) and summarize the work of a fellow student. Oral and visual storytelling is taught stressing
the importance of verbs. Students collect verbs and their definitions, tell a story orally and then tell a visual story
based on another student’s oral narrative. Students will learn how technology shaped their parents' teen years and
how it continues to shape theirs. They will create a Venn diagram that compares the technology and media of the
different time periods. Students will learn about heroes and comic book superheroes. They are taught the definition
of “zeitgeist.” A written self-portrait is created. Students then produce a comic book style superhero based on
themselves. A nemesis of their superhero is described. Students learn the Three Principles of Unique and
Memorable characters: #1 – Unique Visual Qualities; #2 – Look and Listen; #3 – True Character. They will then write
a character profile. Following that, they present an oral character profile in the form of a Podcast MP3 file. Students
will read the second third of the graphic novel Runaways (Pride & Joy). They will learn about the three key elements
of a story: Introduction, Complication and Resolution (Conclusion). They tell a story orally, in three parts, with the
help of two fellow students. The story is submitted as Podcast MP3 files. Students will learn about the qualities of
novel, short story, dramatic and visual writing. They learn how to write effective dialogue for visual storytelling. A
short comic, based on a listening exercise, is created. Students finish reading the graphic novel, Runaways (Pride and
Joy). Students write a profile of a character from Runaways (Pride & Joy). They also write a summary of the book. An
autobiographical graphic novel (3 chapters, 10-12 panels per chapter) is created.

Description: This unit is designed to have students think about the habits of good readers, drawing a parallel
between how they make inferences both as viewers and readers of a media work. In the activities, students will
learn to distinguish between implicit and explicit information and develop their visualizing skills by thinking about

Description: This unit focuses on reading a novel with multiple contexts. Students are given a list of seven novel
choices and begin their reading. Students are taught a pacesetting strategy which will follow them through the
reading. Notetaking is encouraged through regular worksheet submissions. As well, students are assigned to novel
study groups to hold discussions and work on comprehension questions. After completing the novel, research is
done on the author and on the historical context of the setting. Students also record their research progress in a blog
format. Finally choice is given again in completing two written assignments and two communication assignments.
Students complete the unit by presenting their work orally and evaluating themselves and their peers.
