Lesson Title:
Advanced Plant and Soil Science
Components of DNA
TEKS Addressed in Lesson: 130.21(c) (15) (A) http://www.tea.state.tx.us/index2.aspx?id=5415#Subchapter A
Lesson Objectives: The student will be able to:
1.
Describe the components of DNA.
2.
Illustrate how information for specifying the traits of an organism is carried in DNA.
Tools and Equipment
Index cards
detachable DNA plastic model, (free nucleotides)
PowerPoint entitled “Components of DNA.”
Student notes entitled “DNA: The Molecule of Heredity”
Key Terms / Vocabulary nucleotides gene
RNA polymerase replication nucleosomes histones adenine guanine thymine cytosine purines pyrimidines codons
Interest Approach/Anticipatory Set
Several questions should be asked to help the students start thinking about the DNA molecule and its function in the cell. Using the DNA model, have students name the parts.
1. How do cells transfer information from old cells to new cell?
2. What part of the cell's nucleus contains the information to control the cells functions?
Teaching Plan and Strategy / Presentation of New Material:
Present new material using PowerPoint Presentation entitled “Components of DNA” after the power point issue the DNA notes. This allows the students to listen to teacher’s presentation and ask and answer questions along the way.
Activity/Application/ Student Engagement /Laboratory:
Assign the seven questions at the end of the power point.
Evaluation / Summary:
The exit ticket is to answer this question on index card: In their own words the students write a paragraph describing the structure of DNA and DNA replication or a paragraph comparing the three types of RNA.
