TECHNOLOGY OF TEACHING HISTORY - Paper II OBJECTIVES 1. To help student teachers understand the different dimensions of history and develop interest in knowing the advancement of new approaches to study history. 2. To orient them to various curricular approaches in Primary, Secondary and Higher Secondary stages and help them to select the suitable materials for history teaching and learning. 3. To help them understand the various approaches in organising materials in history. 4. To provide practical experience to use various resources and equipment in teaching history. 5. To make the student teachers acquaint with the traditional and modern methods of evaluation procedures and techniques applicable to history learning and to analyse the different aspects of content matters in the textbooks prescribed for the standards X and XI. UNIT 1 DIMENSIONS OF HISTORY (10 Hours) 1.1 Different Branches of History - Political, Social, Economic, Cultural. 1.2 Dimensions of History - Continuity, Development, Time, Place and Ideas. 1.3 Subaltern History, Contemporary History. 1.4 Geographical Foundations of History 1.5 Chronology in History a) Importance of chronology b) Dimensions of chronology c) Devices of chronology UNIT- 2 CURRICULAR APPROACHES AND SELECTION (10 Hours) 2.1 The need for the detailed study of curriculum content in history on the basis of time, place and theme. 2.2 Place of Local, National and International history. 2.3 Principles of framing syllabus - Primary, secondary and higher secondary. 2.4 Theories in selection of materials. a) Doctrine of Natural talents and interests b) Cultural Epoch Theory c) Proceeding from the Near to Remote d) The ideal approach 2.5 Implications of those theories - primary, secondary and higher secondary. UNIT - 3 ORGANISATION OF MATERIALS (10 Hours) 3.1 Unit and Topical. 3.2 Periodical and Chronological. 3.3 Concentric Plan. 3.4 Spiral Plan. 3.5 Regressive Plan. UNIT - 4 RESOURCE AND EQUIPMENT (10 Hours) 4.1 Text Books and Collateral reading. 4.2 Library, Museum, Archives and History Laboratory. 4.3 Community resources, Field trips, Current events. 4.4 Audio Visual Aids. 4.5 Mass Media. UNIT -5 EVALUATION (10 Hours) 5.1 Different types of tests in History - Achievement and Diagnostic. 5.2 Subjective types tests in History - Supply type questions (Essay type, brief answers, short answer, problem solving). 5.3 Objective type tests in History - Selection type items (Multiple choice, matching, true or false, fill in the blanks). 5.4 Examining the results of tests against instructional objectives of learning history. 5.5 Content analysis of the history textbooks prescribed by the Government of Tamilnadu for Standards X and XII.
