Arte da Taiwan – Taiwan Contemporary Art
Arte da Taiwan— Taiwan Contemporary Art
Starting on March 8th, the Museo di Arte Contemporanea di Villa Croce in Genoa, Italy,
presents “Arte da Taiwan”, an exhibition of contemporary art from Taiwan. Succeeding to
“taïwanpics.doc : art contemporain taïwanais”, an exhibition that took place in 2009 in the
École nationale supérieure des Beaux-Arts in Paris, and the other exhibition “Taiwan Calling”
that has recently come to a successful end in Budapest, Hungary, “Arte da Taiwan” has been
conceived by the Paris based Taiwan Cultural Center of the National Council for Cultural
Affairs and worked out with the support of the Kaohsiung City Museum of Fine Arts.
Introducing systematically and as widely as possible the creativity of Taiwan contemporary
artists to the European public has been for the past three years the unique goal tirelessly
pursued by Chen Chih-Cheng, the Director of the Culture Center. By looking for constant
exhibition conceptions and ideas, by striving for cooperation projects, it has been possible to
link up with several high cultural institutions in Europe and thus to enhance the visibility and
comprehension of contemporary art creations from Taiwan, so specifically different from art
creation in the West.
Most of the 14 artists of the “Arte da Taiwan” exhibition are around 30 years old. They all
belong to the new generation of Taiwanese artists whose video and mixed media creations
bring up the topic of personal space in modern life, study the differences and similarities of
ideas about culture and society under the influence of globalization, explore virtual worlds,
reflect on consumer behavior, etc. Their works are a free expression, without any restraint, of
the diversity, vitality and open-mindedness of art, such as it has started blooming in Taiwan
during the nineties.
Taiwan contemporary art is now peacefully conquering new territories on the international
scene. By presenting the new generation of Taiwanese contemporary artists to Italian audience
with “Arte da Taiwan” in Genoa, this old Italian city steeped in rich history and culture, we do
hope that thus new horizons will open for a fruitful dialogue between Italy and Taiwan.
From March 8th to April 24th, 2011

Arte da Taiwan – Taiwan Contemporary Art
Exhibition Introduction
Arte da Taiwan is a presentation of Taiwanese art trends and developments after the Second
World War. The post-war Taiwan was still influenced by the Japanese colonization
economically, industrially and culturally. The effects were a positive force to the
reconstruction and modernization of the society. But the cross-strait tension with communist
China cast dark clouds over the island's cultural landscape. Nearly four decades of martial law
(1949-1987) have witnessed the political oppression and interference everywhere in the art
arena, hindering local artists' dialogues with the outside world. Because of this unique
historical and political background, it is difficult to evaluate the artistic evolution in Taiwan
through a historicist eye or using the common frame of reference of the "East/West".
Since the colonization, the conception and education of art on the island were partly a
European implant by Japan and partly a continuation of the Chinese tradition, especially the
latter, which played a key role in forging Taiwanese cultural identity. But as a modernized
society, we need a “cultural ID” to interact with others. In a world where people are more
opening up and information exchange is accelerating, what role can Taiwan play on the global
art stage? While Taiwanese artists enjoy more exposure in major exhibitions, but with
Japanese, Korean and Chinese artists also absorbing world's attention, how does Taiwan
create a unique identity in modern art scene? How do artists respond to the influences of their
historical and political background? And how do they reflect upon their situation and cultural
advantage in a rapidly modernized and wireless age?
The globalization has synchronized the time-space and technology has deterritorialized the
world, turning it into a boundless "info-space". This is where the budding Taiwanese artists
dwell and travel now. For them, there may be no longer the urgent need to answer the history.
And the Internet is more an inter-subjective mode of existence than a given reality. In other
words, they think and live through the Internet, which becomes the nutrition of their art praxes
and shifts their creative activities towards a more fluid, visualized, conceptualized, everyday
and easily erasable mode.
Besides several critical reflections on the pass of the country, Arte da Taiwan will show most
of all the new approaches of the younger generation, such as the multiple perceptions of
modern living space (the match and confrontation of private and public life), the
differentiation and permeation of a post-cultural, globalized world, the reflection upon
consumer society, the contradiction of local and international communities, and the
exploration of virtual reality. The aim of this project is to present the unique vocabulary of
contemporary art on the island in a plural, crossover way. The modern art in Taiwan is
constantly pushing and extending its boundaries, with unpredictable potential and tension. Art
is never to be named or categorized, but as it piles up, the strata will demonstrate its rich
genealogy and colorful history. With the works of 14 mid- and new-generation artists, the
exhibition hopes to present the aesthetical landscape in post-war Taiwan, and explore the
shaping of a cultural identity and an artistic trend.

Exhibition Plan
Recent works of 14 artists, including paintings, sculptures, video installations, audio
installations, video clips, digital and performing art. Taiwanese artists who work in France
will also be invited to explore the geo-cultural influence on artistic activities and facilitate
dialogues among artists. The works will focus on the crossover of history (time) and region
(space), with topics like "aspects of Taiwanese culture", "expression of cultural difference",
"construct of artistic vocabulary", "the new generation in media-Internet era" and "modern art
in Taiwan". Panel discussions will also be held for audience to better understand, through the
discussion between exhibition planner and artist, the contemporary arts in Taiwan.

The artists
CHEN Chi-Pan 陳淇榜
Born in 1978, in Taichung, Taiwan
Chi-Pan CHEN’s first works are based on the imaginary scene of the relation between his own
body and the surrounding world. Through imagination and the unconventional use of found
objects, the artist tries to reveal to the viewer the hidden sides of things. He draws his
inspiration from the discrepancy between imaginary world and reality. In this way reality
becomes more substantial and from there on history appears to the artist like a huge archive
offering numerous possibilities of exploration, interpretation and comprehension.

CHEN Wan-Jen 陳萬仁
Born in 1982 in Hsinchu, Taiwan
Wan-Jen CHEN’s video work explores all possibilities of subversion and diversion offered by
the camera. Thus he expresses his thoughts and his feelings about the media or his awareness
of what they are. In most of his video works, from “Way 2” up to “Unconsciousness Voyage”,
the pictures unreel constantly in a loop and tell us stories without beginning nor end.

CHOU Yu-Cheng 周育正
Born in 1976 in Taipei, Taiwan
To Yu-Cheng Chou, the images broadcast nowadays by the media compose a peculiar

he modifies with computer graphics what he finds in the media. He underlines ironically or
poetically the underlying meanings in the lavish imagery of the media.

CHU Hsien-Hsu 朱賢旭
Born in 1975 in Taipei, Taiwan
Hsien-Hsu CHU’s videos deal with the relationship between movement, force, position, order,
proportionality, as well as with notions derived from the semantic field such as spacing,
repelling, transforming, crystallizing, dividing, accumulating, repeating, interrupting,
prioritizing, stripping and disintegrating. By combining two of these notions he introduces the
viewer to a new relationship with the perceived object and compels him to resort to a new way
of perception, as to create the “eternal intransitivity”.

CHUANG Che-Wei 莊哲瑋
Born in 1981 in Changhua, Taiwan
Since 2004, when he went into pictorial practice, Che-Wei CHUANG has been investigating
the way his pictures take shape as well as their expressive properties. His thinking focuses
particularly on the possibility to work out pictures that make sense despite the fact that their
continuous forwarding and broadcasting through modern means of communication tend to
blur them. While thinking about the circumstances under which painting turns real, the artist
questions its constituents. Further he strives for a way to materialize pictures and to make
them autonomous. He assumes that the lines and shapes in his paintings are inspired by “prepainted painting” and that they intertwine the body of the painting just like rhythm and
melody in poems and songs.

JAO Chia-En 饒加恩
Born in 1976 in Taichung, Taiwan
Chia-En JAO’s work consists of videos, installations, documents and miscellaneous objects. It
is the result of conceptual projects. His creations refer to his personal experience. Each of
them is an artistic move intended to burst in on the public scene. By intending to insert his
own singular point of view into a continuously changing political and historical context, he
tries to work out completely new situations and layouts that fit neither in social standards nor
in cultural prototypes. The result from this “neither, nor” attitude are issues that match his
centers of interest: influence of signs, acknowledgement of identity, common experience,
strategies concerning the various esthetical paradigms.

LUO Jing-Zhong 羅景中
Born in 1975 in Chiayi, Taiwan
Jing-Zhong LUO’s work refers to the principle of Feng Shui. It aims at reconstructing the
fields where man and nature harmonize with each other. This artist regards his work as a
microcosm, as an act of “reorganization”. His installations bring together objects such as
water, light, wax and sometimes plants. Through a process of recreation he transforms them
into pictures or signs. The viewer who moves among his works feels his senses modified and
cannot but adapt himself to the new context.

TSAI Ying-Cheng 蔡影瀓
Born in 1974 in Taipei, Taiwan
Ying-Chen TSAI explores the relationship between the body and its surroundings. Thus she
questions the problems of individual perception. According to her, “most of the time, the real
purpose of a work of art reveals itself thanks to the behavior and the reactions of individuals”.
She quotes as an example the initiation rites of Taiwan aborigine hunters which she interprets
as an enactment of themselves (mastery and dissociation) and she suggests to the viewer to
use it for questioning and entering her works.

TSUI Kuang-Yu 崔廣宇
Born in 1974 in Taipei, Taiwan
Kuang-Yu TSUI’s performances and videos deal with the adaptability of human beings to
society. By referring to ecology and by means of his absurd experiments which go far beyond
our society’s usual conventions, he tries to question the urban system and to redefine the
environment. His performances aim at underlining the absurdity of our daily life – which we
are not aware of. They offer us a kind of “summary”, says he, of the culture and society to
which he belongs. He provides us thus extravagantly with another way of seeing reality or of
living, reacting and facing society.

TZENG Yong-Ning 曾雍甯
Born in 1978 in Changhua, Taiwan
Interested in vegetal biology, Yong-Ning TZENG draws plants and vegetables directly from
life. The medium he uses is both original and trite: ball-point pens of different colors. The
wide lines drawn evenly by the artist are the result of a repetitive gesture. While she used in
his first drawings to depict carefully the structure and the nature of each plant, Yong-Ning
TZENG works nowadays primarily on the creative process characterized by the almost
unconscious repetitive automatism of gesture.

WANG Ya-Hui 王雅慧
Born in 1973 in Taipei, Taiwan
What do daily life anecdotes partake of? How is it possible to transmute a meaning into
another by tackling daily matters? Ya-Hui WANG works on ordinary things of life and tries to
make them appear odd, to bring them into an unstable state. She wants thus to create a
connection between real space and imaginary space as well as a possibility of exchange
between them. The intensity of the video images results from the tension that the artist
establishes between familiarity and strangeness.

YAO Chung-Han 姚仲涵
Born in 1981 in Taipei, Taiwan
In order to describe today’s life, Chung-Han YAO relies on what he calls “the hyper compression of
information”. Instead of bringing forward some anxiety caused by “the information boom” in
present society, he rather uses the notion of “oscillating axis” to express his standpoint.
Sound, light and positioning are important constituents in Chung-Han YAO’s work. According to
him, people can easily decipher with their eyesight the appearance and disappearance of light. But
their body may sometimes be lead by effervescences of visual effects and feel dizziness or
headache. Therefore his work lays stress on the fact that people are used to “see” sounds rather than
to “listen to” images. By means of “visual tension contrasting with auditory tension”, he tries to
disrupt our sensory experiences in order to make us ponder over the perception of our environment.
